Modelzone Being Greedy?

Recommended Posts

I spoke with a member of staff in one of the stores this morning, about the eyewatering price of their Sound fitted models. They said that they have been instructed by Hornby to increase the prices to or close to the RRP. This is 'because of the deal we have with them' what ever that means ? Sale or return ?

On the positive side the store I shopped in price matched a local shop and I saved over £50 on the MZ displayed prices.

Regards

GW.

Having now read through the tread, I aggree that if you dont want to pay the advertised price go somewhere else.

Im what you might call a bit of a tart when it comes to buying models or anything come to that, if I can get it cheaper elsewhere then I will.

I'll also ask for discount quoting 'XXX shop this for XXX price can you match or better it?' sometimes they say yes, sometimes they say no.

If I know Ive got a good deal when they refuse to match or better I will pay up, but I have on occasion said ok then I'll leave these then and left the store.

Regards.

And next time you go in the shop and any chance of a discount has been lost because they remember how rude you were last time!

I wonder how you would feel if you were at work and somebody spoke to you like that?

Manners cost nothing but sadly are dying out in this me me me world.

I used to hate these people who think they are being clever and insist on haggling for everything. I never gave in to them on principle, although I would quite often offer a discount if the margin could stand it to get a sale if someone seemed genuinely to be put off by the price of something. If that kind of customer walks out without buying and never comes back, that is a result. There's no point in selling something if you just discounted the profit away.

I would have though you more than most would appreciate the problem if a shop is no longer around to support your purchase Marc? http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/52622-mad-on-models-newport-south-wales/page__p__621084&do=findComment&comment=621084

And aren't there a lot of people who don't seem to grasp that simple reality.

Shop staff are mostly just employees, losing their job is more likely to happen through them having to make too many lengthy explanations to their bosses of why they broke company pricing policy.

Not that strange, it's what happens when you hit the 'like this' button instead of the 'reply quoting this post' button directly below it by mistake. :)

Strang then that you 'Liked' his post that you quote.

Slight mis hit of the buttons. I most certainley DO NOT like yorkkie-puds attittude at all. I hope shop keepers tell him exactly where to go [ not another shop]

You can always go back and 'unlike' it, although if the poster has email notifications of 'likes' set up, I dont suppose it'll retrieve that :D

Very true Mr Y. However Ive learnt my lesson when it comes to small shops. Im sticking to the likes of Hattons, Rails and Modelzone from now on.

I'm not a fan of Modelzone re-pricing stock, but don't see the point in getting outraged when (as has been posted) we have the choice of where we want to shop. Modelzone in Holborn is local to me and I have a good relationship with the staff there. I use them for their limited editions and keep an eye on their sale stuff which can be excellent value, they also give me a discount on Scalextric as an NSCC member and will price match on railway stuff with SB. I also still use the Hobby Shop in Faversham (it used to be my local retailer) as it is such an excellent shop - they get all my forward orders for must have new releases; and my favourite mail order house is Model Railways Direct in Portishead for great prices, packing and speed. Sometimes I'll pick something up at Ian Allan in Waterloo. The (rather rambling) point of this post is that you don't neccessarily have to stick to one retailer or policy, and just because one retailer does something you don't like, don't cut off your nose to spite your face if they then have an offer or an item you do like.

Repricing is not just a Modelzone thing its gone on for years in most shops once a new price list is released - maybe its because Modelzone typcially price at the list price, rather than discount it, it is noticed more particularly given the eye watering increases Hornby have come up with this year.

Wonder if its time this thread was locked?

As I said some time back in this thread, it was the strange way MZ was doing it. Making it very obvious they were repricing (upwards) old stock.

Had they just stripped the shelves one by one and replaced the items with their new prices probably no one would have noticed!

However, having revisited the branch in question I'm not sure everything (Hornby) has been priced upwards.

Why tar all small shops with the same brush. A little short sighted I feel

I hope you have as much success when asking to see and touch actual models on the net as you can in your local shop.

I know of one shop that has some items priced up (the specialist stuff and built 0 gauge wagons) but does not price up any of the 00 and N gauge stuff, so that they can match the Hattons prices that can change daily.

From what I have been told they have had Trading Standards in and after explaining the pricing policy there is a small notice somewhere visible saying that this is the case.

If modelzone can convince TS which I would expect that they could then they can do it within reason.

Quite Right, This is Mostly down to the reason that you can't have a two tier pricing system on the Computer System for the same product number, Say of you had R9999 from Hornby @ 20 squid siting on the shelves for some weeks. On the next delivery of R9999 Hornby issue new pricing of 22 squid, so all stock will have get priced at the new price, I have seen prices come down too and not just up.

cheers

Pricing at "new price" is common in lots of businesses, for the simple reason that when they buy in new stock to replace what you have just bought, they'll have to pay the new cost price for it. It helps reduce cashflow problems.

I believe accounts refer to LIFO - Last In First Out to describe this approach. Of course it can work both ways, when prices go down as well as up. As it seems likely that prices from China will continue to increase, so purchasers of RTR products will have to accept that the cheap products that they have been used to will get dearer. Moving production to a cheaper economy such as India may help.
