Kirkby Luneside (Original): End of the line....

Talking about viaducts in the garden Larry, While on Holiday in France this year we ended up in a toyshop and found some German brick modelling kits. They have real bricks in them, measuring about 10x20 mm.

There was something around when I was a boy called 'Brickplayer' using individual bricks. My viaduct will be moulded in cement after making molds - if I get that far. Sorry for going off-topic there Jeff........Just sorted out the computer and recovered all my letters and addresses, so I'm sort of chuffed at the minute! Edited by coachmann

Well, I've been in the bunker for an hour. Now I have most of the turnout motors fitted I've got 3 or 4 more risers to fit in - so I've just been and planned where these will go. That's a job I'd totally forgotten about, but I think I'll do it tomorrow.

Then I had a "play" with the turnout tie bars. The 3 curved turnouts are beautifully smooth. some of the 60" jobs are going to need a bit of file-work. no real problem, in the end.

I decided it was time to retreat into the warmth of the house, though you do rapidly acclimatise to the temperature in there (3C outside, 10C in the bunker with no heating, 20C in the house).

Andy - re. wiring. It's great when it works. But studying the spaghetti when it doesn't...!!

It's not off-topic Larry as it's a contribution to the ongoing bridge/viaduct subtopic in this thread! One thing, though. If you make your viaducts from cement - even more so if you include metal wires or aggregate as a form of reinforced concrete - you won't be pulling 'em up quite so often.

What do you mean "if I get that far"? That's a job for the Spring!

I agree about temperatures, here in work I like it around 16-17oC, which at this time of year is cold, but does mean that when I have to go out to the gates, I don't get too cold. I often come in and its 24oC, mind you one lad we had, used to have it over 30oC!

Tell me about faulting. Mind you, I still have my 'tone sets' that I got out of skips when I worked for telecom. They do make finding a fault (or a single wire) so much easier.

How are you wiring this DDC stuff up? Is it on seperate small sections, that are isolatable for fault finding?

Anyway, a serious note now! I fully agree with everyone that this, along with Jason’s Bacup, is the best thread on RMWeb, but has anyone realised that one day Jeff, despite the attentions of the rest of us assorted loonies, is actually going to finish Kirkby Luneside. What then I ask myself? Last night in the wee small hours (I was working, honest Guv! Nothing serious, just keeping body and soul together like!) the answer came. What we should do, I think, is form a working party, go up to Jeff’s and extend his garage for him. That way we can sit back and watch Jeff extend towards Carlisle, safe in the knowledge that the Show Will Go On! Interested parties, please form a queue behind this photograph of a worried physicist peering suspiciously through his letterbox!

And now the weather forecast..............

Regards to all

Bill (I really must start going to bed early....)

Bill, I think you must have been drinking too much Theakston's. I try my best, but I'm sure there are better threads...Jason's certainly!

Moving swiftly on - what am I going to do in 2 years time when KL is "finished"?

I'm going to: Build a shunting layout, with home-made turnouts, scratchbuilt buildings, weathered locos and everything else I've been persuaded to take-up by "you lot"!!

Or maybe I'll just spend my time watching the trains go by!!

Jeff

This comment seems to have caused some offence. It was only meant to imply that I don't think this is the best thread in any sense of the word. I'm overwhelmed by the compliment, but I'm also extremely sorry if this has caused a problem.

The strength of this thread, as I see it, is the friendship and humour amongst the posters. I don't think anyone on here would ever intend to offend anyone else. If offence has been caused then I'm very upset.

So I'll call it a day. Please keep posting.

Jeff,

What the heck is that post about? I can't see what offence could have been caused by the second bold statement.

Please don't call it a day, without you this thread is nothing!

There is no offence in that at all Jeff, if that had been me I would have just smiled and carried on, taking it in the humorous way it was intended.

Keep up the great work and posts, we would be lost without them.

All the best

Jim

Good grief! I recall 'BrickPlayer' sets around 1959 in toyshops here. They had individual bricks and suggestions for building anything like houses and structures, very appealing to me at the time, aged 9yrs. Don't remember if there was a cement, but I think so. I think it was the 'set' and the box and creative pleasure of building which hit the mark for me, until something else along and diverted me, like Meccano or Hornby or a new Kodak 'Box Brownie' camera...

Just contributing thread drift Jeff... sorry.

Anyway, now back to why we're all on this website; the trains.

Jeff, as promised, here's the allocation for the shed beyond the fiddle yard..... Kingmoor. Diesel shunters have again been omitted from the list.

A quick check of your list, Peter, reveals that the only loco I have as a match is 9F 92249.

My 2 Black 5s almost match, not quite!

But I'm delighted to see the number of Brits and Clans on there. That gives plenty of scope - they are expensive models (I've 3 Brits already) - for additional purchases!

Ah, the pleasures of cutting wood again - the very last piece of 4 x 2 from my formerly immense stockpile! Just enough for a couple of risers, then I'll have to use some "smaller scale" stuff!

Andy, thanks for the Crosti 9F stuff. My inbox has never been so popular at the mo - stuff from you and stuff from AndyP.

Quite 'andy to have an Andy around!

I've just spent nearly 3 hours fitting those risers. Still more to do, but they can't go in 'til I fit the final 3 turnouts - and that depends on when Marcway deliver them!

I know that some people like to see every drop of blood I've spilled, so I'll take a couple of underboard riser pics and post them later. That'll be something for you to look forward to. "Oh look, there's a knot in that piece of wood he used!!"

Cup of tea, then back out to do some wiring. all these jobs are small in themselves but add up to a lot when you've done them.

Blimey, Peter!

12" to the foot scale, 4'8.5" gauge - bit on the big side for me! Don't think I could use my trusty steel ruler or 4' level to straighten that lot up!

Btw, the Kingmoor list was fascinating. So many class 5 locos. Excellent!
