Picture on flyer posted by Andy is of "Alloa" also to be featured (all going well) in June issue of Hornby magazine, due out around 11 May, so get your preview there!

The van is booked and we are all deciding what we are having on the Saturday dinner. Hope there isn't three feet of snow this time and we can make it safely!

Really looking forward to this - the full crew will be making th trip to Wigan with Summat Colliery - both Nigel (disco-dave) and Keith (nesst2) will be assisting allowing a proper staff rotation of one hour on, one hour off to take place.

post-6717-0-12239300-1335945056.jpg

I'll be bringing all my builds so far, so the 2-8-0 will work as usual, the 2-8-2 will probably be parked on the loading bay siding and the Duke of Gloucester will be making the odd surprise visit. Just wish the O1 was out in time, but it looks like this will not be the case.

The layout will also be operating with MERG's latest prototype block cut out/reverser modules DC06 to protect each section from short circuits. If anyone wants to know more just ask. The resident shunter "Harry" has recently been equipped with sound and a glowing firebox, can't wait to have serious play with that :)

See you all there!

If you are thinking of attending the Wigan SUMMER Exhibition and particularly if you are coming as a group, then you need to visit our website, www.wiganfrm.org.uk and on there you will find details of our 4 for 3 ticket. This ticket allows entry into the exhibition for four adults for £30 including 4 guidebooks.

So it is possible to attend an exhibition with 38 quality layouts, with a comprehensive list of traders, for £7.50 including a guidebook, this has got to be a good deal.

Also, if you are stuck with the kids or grandchildren then they get in for free with each accompanying adult.

Advance Tickets are available from our website - http://www.wiganfrm.org.uk/2012_tickets.html

you can purchase a 4 for 3 ticket, a Two day ticket, or a One day ticket,

advance ticket holders will gain entry to the exhibition 15 mins before the show opens to the public,

get the best of both and save money on your ticket and gain early entry!!!!

plus why not treat your dad or get your children to treat you to a day out that you would enjoy seeing as how it will be Father's Day on the sunday.

as Eaton says above, Children under 16 will receive a free gift and gain FREE entry with each accompanying adult.

Hope to see all of you in 37 days!!!

After finally completing the Guidebook and sending the discs to the printers, I had time to spend reading the layout write-ups again. As always we have complete faith in our Exhibition Managers ability to attract a selection of interesting layouts to Wigan, and this years selection seem well up to par. It is inevitable that his selection should refect his own interests which are Pre-Grouping in general and Lancashire and Yorkshire in particular. Therefore it is no surprise to see that Martin Neald's 'Eccleston' should be invited to Wigan. I have seen the photographs and it does look superb, and as it hasn't been seen very often on the exhibition curcuit it would seem to be a good reason to give our first Summer Exhibition a visit.

Even given Steve's preferences, I notice at least 5 layouts that are set post 1980, (is that Modern Image?). 'Bishop's Bridge', 'Glenuig', 'Loch Tat', 'St Giles', 'Thorne Yard' and 'Warren Lane' are all definitely diesel rather than steam layouts. There also other layouts set in the transition period which may give this year's exhibition a more balanced feel.

I also noticed that there are some large exhibits this year, 17 of the layouts being larger than 20' and some in excess of 30'.

Another new development this year is that advanced tickets can be purchased at various exhibitions from the trade stands of Cheltenham Model Centre and D &E / DC Kits if you have the stomach for Charlie's banter.

  • 2 weeks later...

Really looking forward to the show now, it will certainly feel strange setting up and taking it down with plenty of daylight and also slightly warmer! Don't know where to start with layouts, but being a D&E modeller, Aberdeen Kirkhill and Warren Lane to name a few will be high on my list of layouts to watch. As its Fathers Day on the Sunday, I think thats a good enough excuse to spend some money! :mail: :nono:

Cheers

Simon

I helped our Exhibition Manager to put up the Publicity Banners in front of the Sports Centre yesterday wearing Sun Glasses and a short sleeved shirt. A far cry from Decembers past when we either needed to be thawed out or dried out. Ah, the joys of summer exhibitions, now we just need the visitors.

Now here's a strange thing regarding Advance Tickets. We thought, given the cost conscious nature of some railway modellers, that the four for three ticket, which gives entrance for an average cost of £7.50 would be very popular. In fact it is the ordinary one day ticket at £9 which is by far the best seller.

When I retold this phenomenon to my wife she said the reason was obvious, as according to her the typical railway modeller hasn't got three friends. When I replied that this was just not true and in fact couldn't be further from the truth, as in my opinion railway modeller are a very friendly bunch, she retorted that even so, you wouldn't get four of them to agree to do the same thing on the same day. At this point I gave up the argument, such cynicism from an otherwise wonderful woman.

There is a serious side to it though, particularly in June: there's a fair chance that anyone who buys in advance might subsequently not be able to make the show. Hence you gamble the extra £1.50 against the possibility of chucking away £7.50...

It's not that the Advance Ticket sales are down, overall they are up, it's the strange phenomenon that we are selling more of the expensive tickets. Very odd!!

However our Treasurer is very happy.

In addition to Ian's comment. I will almost certainly be there but can't yet commit to one day or the other...

As I understand it, the '4 for 3' offer is not 4 separate tickets but one ticket to admit four people at the same time, so to take advantage of it all four would have to arrive together. We couldn't for example order the '4 for 3' ticket and two of us attend Saturday and the other two on Sunday...

Given that restriction, unless you can absolutely guarantee all four will be attending together, the 4x £9=£36 option is better than potentially paying £30 for the '4 for 3' ticket plus 1 or 2x £10 on the day...

To quote my wife 'you will never get four railway modellers to agree to do the same thing on the same day', don't tell me she is right!!

Using my skill and judgement, I booked a week's holiday in Exmouth, starting on the 15th June

Just to even up the balance of the world, and make room for you in Devon, two of us are travelling up from Plymouth to the Wigan show.

This may seem a long trip, but we are doing it enroute to Southern Ireland!

Leighton Buzzard by Tony Gee & Ken Hill? We may be exhibiting the layout but I can't help but think that it might attract more visitors if it was publicised as being by the Rev. Peter Denny and part of Buckingham.

Everything on display is pure "Denny" including one of our operators (Crispin Denny). We will also have Nick Freezer with us, who has known Buckingham since he was taken to see it by his dad, when he was a small child.

Perhaps I will be fielding the same sort of questions as I had at another show last year. "Did you base your layout on one of Peter Denny's?" "Why didn't they publicise that this was going to be here, loads of my mates would have come to see it?".

Not my problem really but such a shame that a potential marketing opportunity is lost.

Maybe Buckingham and Peter Denny are very much of another age and not the single most influential layout and modeller that our hobby has ever had, as I always thought they were.
