LNER4479
Those signals are absolutely brilliant. You'd never be able to achieve that level of finesse with another material. Thanks. I would say 'never be able to achieve that level of finesse and robustness with another material', particularly bearing in mind these are all going to be working signals. Very nice work on the signals, they look really good. Did you just email Andrew and say "I want the bits for one of these". You're not planning on lighting them, then? Al. Sort of. I e-mailed him saying what I wanted; then it all got a bit complicated so we sorted it out at the York show. Much better to be able to look at all the individual bits n pieces directly, particularly when trying to put together a bespoke signal.

I suspect a visit to the Donny Show, accompanied by relevant picture book, will be required then Graham, for some other signals from another age in another place? By gad Sir, those pegs are one damn fine project. Nowt like a deadline for inspiring one to do stuff. I actually suffered from that just before the Retford Show a couple of years back but I had to take over the Conservatory with the layout to achieve things; that was, of course, really popular..... I'm going to have to have a word with SWMBO about me having a dedicated workstation. That is the only way I am ever going to actually get on with making stuff. Dare I suggest a shed? P. drmditch
Now if you'd have mentioned the land of copper-capped-ness that might have been a different thing... I hope this doesn't apply to brass-capped-ness. (There might be visitors - one day!)

ROY@34F
Hi Graham, See attached photo in today's " Grantham Matters" web site. Taken in 1934, north end of High Street, Angel and Royal Hotel behind the LNER lorry. Just about your period.
RMweb Gold teaky Posted October 10, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 10, 2016 What a great photo. Very atmospheric. The lorry looks similar to the Peco Modelscene Thorneycroft kit.

I have a drawing for a 1930's delivery lorry that looks not a little like that. Another project for the 'to do' list...
LNER4479
An opportune moment methinks to advise of Grantham's other 2017 show appearance, at the Hartlepool show 21st/22nd October 2017. Opportune as it is the Hartlepool 2016 show next weekend, 22nd/23rd October. Definitely worth a visit; nice location for the show, walkable from the railway station. One or two of the Grantham team are likely to be lurking around, notably the show manager himself, Paul Bolton, who is the genius behind much of the scenics and buildings on Grantham. Paul has started a show thread for next week which can be found in the exhibitions section of this website. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/115792-hartlepool-model-railway-show/ Also a facecloth page: https://www.facebook.com/HartlepoolMRG/ Edited October 16, 2016 by LNER4479

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted October 17, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 17, 2016 Well I for one had no idea what Barry was on about, so I had to go and look it up. You learn a new thing everyday, apparently, and I am now the proud owner of the knowledge that Hartlepool's natives are sometimes known as "Monkey Hangers" due to an unfortunate incident in the Napoleonic period. More here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_hanger Thanks Baz! Al.
RMweb Premium Dominion Posted October 17, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 17, 2016 I found some photos yesterday that were new to me. They are in "The Bill Reed Collection British Railways Steam King's Cross to Aberdeen" by Peter Tuffrey. There are 17 photos of Grantham, some very familiar angles and locations but a few slightly less familiar. One shows the East side of the Old Shed, with 67632 not obscuring that much of it. Dated as 1957. Page 32. I think I remember 4479 looking for one of those in the distant past. Good luck at the next show. Tom

Popular Post LNER4479
Wow - they're great Roy, thanks. (Love the 'Omnibus Station' notice!) Meanwhile, in between steady progress on the signals, details are being worked on for the station. Barrow crossings existed at both ends in LNER days. Here the north end one is being put together, using the good ol' Wills wooden planking sheets. And a little while later ... even without the full surrounding scenery, it certainly adds something. And at the south end as well. Both the prototype ones were a straight run across between level platform ends. For various compression and layout planning reasons, neither of my platform ends line up, resulting in some adaptation. The north end one was done away with when the trackwork into the plat.1 bay was rationalised and the platform extended. Nice to be adding details and these are quite distinctive features. Of course, now that we have barrow crossings then we'll be needing barrows! Tom of the scenery team has been busy... ...as has Paul! This looks to be a delightful representation of one of the GPO trolleys that appear in a Cedric Clayson photo. They're due to be a-visiting next week so hopefully we should have some of these in situ on the platforms soon!

LNER4479
Just started reading your layout thread. Do you have the track plan to hand? Thanks! Not sure if I've posted these before so there you go. Equally not sure why I didn't just take it as one single photo - but there you go! Some details of the layout might be slightly different from what is shown (eg the up goods yard) Enjoy the read
Dr Gerbil-Fritters
After being impressed by a fiddle yard with four turntables, I realised the plan was in two parts. So I quickly did this. Having a 'slight obsession' with track plans, I notice that the actual trackage around the Ruston works and the cattle sidings are different to the plan as drawn.
