JF I worked the 1902 and the 1985 boxes which controlled this area. Pre 1973 there were a total 218 levers in 2 LNWR boxes controlling Hooton - although quite a few were spare by that time. flyingsignalman
In the summer of 1980, for 3 months, I had relief Signalman's job and I managed to work a few turns in Heswall Hills box. It was an all wood MS&L design with a 20 lever frame. The frame girder under the box could have accommodated a 32 lever frame so the box was larger than may have been expected. The station opened on 1st May 1898 and presumably the box opened at the same time. It was closed in January 1981 (the 5th I think). The bike under the steps belonged to a regular passenger who left it there while he went to work.Yesterday I called in with my camera and took this picture. Can you tell the difference?A view of the remains from a road which runs by the railway.

Joint Line Signalman
Interesting to see the photos and comments about Bromborough box. I have a few photos that I took in 1966/67 when I was Regular signalman there. The Second photo shows the interior with full oil light illumination!! The facilities were very basic at this time, coal fire, chemical loo, oil lights and stove. A train has been accepted on the Down Slow and one is in section from Spital on the Up Fast. There was only one spare, this was next to the up slow starter. I was told that it was either an outer home or advanced starter, but I never had any confirmation on this. Does anyone have any further info on this? The diagram in the box at the time was dated 1944, so there must have been some alterations done at this time. I have more photos, but I need to reduce the file size first.

I was at Oxley on for the commissioning weekend of the new box, drew up a rewire of Codsall after the Bobby set fire to it by stacking the stove up on Sunday night ready to come back at 6am on Monday, worked on the pre-testing of Madeley Junction when the box was built, and was testing on the rationalisation of Wellington boxes in 1973 when that concrete relay hut was commissioned. Merfyn Jones
Ages ago, I promised more pictures for this thread. Having been reminded by recent posts, here are a few to be going on with from the hard drive. I must get some more scanned. After it was found that some redundant signal posts were rotten. A check of the remaining posts that we were responsible for found that the best option was to remove them all, before they fell down. The P.way trolley from Gaerwen was borrowed and those remaining on the Amlwch branch were disposed of. Here a steel post and a timber one are felled by our welder Dave 'chips' Williams, a job he really enjoyed. Many pictures have in them the late Graham Mickleburgh (Mick) who I had the pleasure of working with for a number of years. Sadly he passed away at an early age, a few years back. Here is Mick and Mark Lamb in cupboard at Llandudno Junction up main distant. We were removing the experimental solar powered repeating after running a mains supply through the Tubular Bridge. Taken from the top of the signal. Mick and I were jointing the telecoms cable that was shared on the Blaenau branch between signalling and telecom functions. c1982 A period with not much happening in our area, we were sent to Chester's patch to lay troughing from Rockliffe Hall to Bagillt. Me (left) and Mick at Glan Conwy where the conventional signalling cable went into the telecoms cable. c1982 The famous HD38 LNWR signal which appeared earlier in the thread, finally gave up one day when the casting broke. Despite all attempts by 'chips' we had to admit defeat and replace the arm with an upper quadrant. Mick fitting a new down main starter at Llandudno Junction, the old one behind previously was slotted with Conway distant. Third class travel, at Llandudno. A GWR Mogo van for S&T materials with benches. Llandudno Junction S&T team awaiting a solar eclipse one lunch time, about 2002? Signal filters proved ideal to see it with. Mick and I on the last repair to a pole route in our area, near Llanrwst. At this time the new cable was already in but not yet swapped over. Penmaenmawr box. More to follow when they get scanned. Bon Accord
I believe Stirling is bereft of semaphores except for the Northbound (Perth line) starter. All the posts have made/were offered for preservation with the majority going to Whitrope and one triple bracket even getting to Ireland! Rather interestingly, in a mirror of the 60s during the many closures, when the posts were removed they weren't dug up complete with foundations, they were merely felled with a 'gas axe' at ground level. The large triple bracket which adorned the Southern apart of the station and got in the way of everyone's photographs made it to the SRPS in Bo'ness

Jon Fitness
Bit quiet on here at the moment! Anyway, random signalling question alert! Did the Southern Railway stack their standard shunt disc signals for multiple routes like the GW and LMS or were they laid out seperately like the LNE? Can't seem to find a photo to show me one way or 't'other. JF
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted June 18, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 18, 2014 Plate 82 in "Southern Signals" by (signalman) George Pryer shows a slightly elevated disc ground signal at Andover. The disc even has a white diamond on the red arm. The caption points out that in SR days, this one signal operated for 5 routes. I can find no example of either stacked or adjacent ground signals in this useful book.
