HI Dave,

Do any pics exist of the North box at Hooton? was it smaller than the now gone South box?

Yes, I've got photos of North - but not mine so I can't post I'm afraid. Hooton North was 90 levers (South was 128) both opened ca 1902 - North closed in December 1973, South in May 1985 when the PortaKabin ("Hooton") took over, this closed in 2014 and Chester now controls the area.

On 26/4/1992 I paid a visit to Winsford box. By this time the Over branch had been closed and lifted, the up loop had also been lifted; the down loop becoming bi-directional.

Arriving first at the down side of the line I saw the remains of a level crossing gate that had once protected the line.

The lock mechanism was also visible.

Driving round to the up side I took this view.

After startling the signalman(!), it was a Saturday if I remember correctly, he allowed me to take some photos in the box.

Some of the diagram.

Very nice. Another one of my former boxes. Iwas based at Hartford Jn on relief 89-91 before I went to Chester. Went to Crewe 92-93 before I reduced myself to escape it and went back to winsford for a while. Returned to Hartford till just before closure then came back to Chester!!

Superb stuff! Ever since I moved to the Wrexham area I found the Wrexham-Brymbo line intriguing. Sadly I arrived after it's closure so it's been books/videos/net etc to find out about it so your pics are very welcome. I'd like to get hold of the signalling diagram from both when it was "all there" and once it started to be reduced. If I ever get round to building my own layout, Brymbo Middle is where I intend to base it on. Freight only, steep inclines, various levels, level crossing, lots of reversing/running round etc. One day......

Cheers

JF

do any good photos exist of the Green Lane box, with tracks present, of after closure?

I'm not sure of where you mean but I think you are referring to Brymbo West Crossing. If so, there are a couple of photos on the disused stations website.

I have a few more photos to post but a bonus week of nights has got in the way!

Slightly further along to Wrexham there was another box called Broughton Forge which closed early on.

Broughton Crossing down home signal which was formerly controlled by Broughton Forge.

The lower landing was for Broughton Crossing's inner distant

Not long after I took this photo the signal was replaced by a distant signal for Broughton Crossing's starter and was 236yards away from it.

Back at Brymbo Middle also on 19/8/1978 2 views of a signal that was controlled by a GF on the Vron branch in the steelworks.

Moving back to the Wirral.

Green Lane Junction - an LMS standard box, provided during WW2 as a temporary replacement for the existing cabin which had been destroyed in an incendiary raid. It closed in 1985 (40 or so years later). It controlled the entrance / exit to Birkenhead (Mollington Street) shed and, until 1967, the junction where the up/down fast and up/down slow became up/down main (to Woodside) and up/down goods (to the docks). Sidings ran off to Camel Lairds and the Monks Ferry branch also trailed in.

It was fitted with a 60 lever frame, initially no spares, by the time I knew it the working part of the frame had substantially been reduced. It had permissive block and wrong road working to Rock Ferry which was "fun"

<Edit - sorry for the poor quality of the up home, this is a fuzzy shot anyway, and this image has been saved and resaved as a jpg a few times which makes it even worse>

HI Mate- these are great pics, showing the sad demise of this line. Do you have any of a bit further down the line to the junction between the shed, and the bridge to Lairds?

In which case....

This rather imposing junction signal at Fort William oversees the passage of the outward Jacobite last Thursday (9th October)

post-16151-0-51788000-1413549637_thumb.jpg

It's been 'elf n safety'-ised but still quite impressive.

Nice to see in the middle of a RETB area!

Re Green Lane Junction; Photos of the other end of the section, where it split into Mollington Street MPD, the Docks line, and Lairds are pretty scarce- do our members have any of this area?

HI Mate, I meant a bit further down the section, towards the bridge

Which bridge ? - you need to be more specific, the bottom picture is the exit from the shed, which is what you asked for.
