My detailing/repainting projects

Recommended Posts

Hi Mike, very interesting that, 'unpowering' a bogie is something I would never have thought of. Considering these things can pull wardrobes, I think that's a very good idea for a small layout! I have been speaking to Sean on FB and he tells me you have had some decent results with Heljan 37 bodyshells and JLTRT cabs, would like to see a piccy or 6 of that if possible.

Hello Lee

With regard to the 37 I again purchased a pre production sample from Heljan some time ago. The thing that let it down in my opinion was the windscreen area, too flat and missing the beading. I've been pestering Brian at Shawplan to do his windscreen etches and laser glaze in 7mm but without success to date (I know he's a very busy man).

My son Robert, (Lord Flasheart on here) has been detailing an old Triang Hymek bodyshell using some parts he obtained from JLTRT and found Laurie there to be very helpful. Anyway following a phone call we received a "parts list" and from this we ordered two complete cabs plus other various etches and castings. I'll just say I thought the costs were very reasonable without actually stating what I paid as it doesn't appear to be an official thing.

Although I've not actually started work on this project yet some initial measuring/observing etc indicates that the profile of the JLTRT parts are very close to the Heljan ones so hopefully a successful graft should be possible in the same way I combined 4mm Bachmann and Lima Class 40 bodyshells some time ago. If not the sides and roof mouldings are available from JLTRT, though the intention is to just detail the Heljan loco with the JLTRT parts, not fully replace it.

When I get chance I'll take some photos of the JLTRT cabs so you can see how they compare to the Heljan bodyshell.

The plan is to also convert this to single motor drive, the spare motor bogie can then be used to power my son's JLTRT Class 50!

Right then as promised here are some photos of the JLTRT Class 37 parts.

Drawing round the back edge of the cab moulding onto a sheet of card produced this template.

Offering it up to the Heljan body shows it to be a close match.

Photos below show the Heljan front and rear cab bulkheads fitted inside the JLTRT cabs, again a close fit.

Finally a couple of comparison shots, hopefully they show what I mean about the shape of the windscreen.

I do think Hornby were at the top of their game diesel and electric wise when they re did the HST a few Years ago. Bar a windscreen and a wiper, I have just finished this pair, repainted from a Virgin pair.

Amongst other things, I picked up one of Legoman's XL West Highland soundchips after being suitably impressed with the 4mm version. I'm going to try and get as much oomph out of this fabulous chip by going overboard with the speakers  :mail:

This is what I standardise on these days, the Alan Butcher (temporarily forgot the size). Packs quite a punch, I can usually get 2 into a 7mm loco.

However, I have been wanting to try this, the Alan Butcher 70x30mm. I purchased it to go in a class 40, but it wouldn't fit! Plenty of space here though, and I can't wait to fire it up.

A pair of 08's finally ready for a bit of weathering.

Yet another 7mm sound project, this time a class 08. First thingto do was check for any potential short circuit areas on the chassis.

16600076070_d6887ef369_o.jpg002 by rothburyuk, on Flickr

Had to find a way to mount the chip vertically, but other than that, a pretty straightforward installation. Sounds good too.

Full light installation is the next job.

One of these days, I will learn. When somebody rings up and says "I'm sending you a loco that someone has started, can you give it a tidy up"........

I had a number of Hornby 56 bodies and chassis lying around, mainly because the lights for some reason refuse to work with ex sound chassis. After investigation, I have discovered that Hornby have wired everything completely back to front on these things. So, I ripped all of the boards out, re wired everything, and hard wired decoder in. Basically Hornby in their wosdom had wired everything negative common, for dcc it needs to be positive common. Why?

On a brighter note, this turned up the other day. Dapol n gauge HST. With the exception of a largeish body to bogie gap, I can't really fault this.

For a moment, Lee, I looked at those photos of the 57 and thought "Oh, dear, he's completely lost it there".

A tidy up, eh? Well, you like a challenge, don't you Lee? Looking forward to seeing you rescue that one.  :O

Cheers

Dave

A challenge I do indeed enjoy my friend. However I have never been that clever in the complete miracles department....... :scratchhead:

It's been a very busy week! Remember the 57 weathered by the school of Stevie Wonder? Well......

Not perfect, but a slight improvement I think.

A nice pair of Hornby grids with their basic large logo livery applied. Shawplan etched roof grilles and bodyside lifting jack covers have been added.

7mm large logo this time, to be 37114. All bodyside alterations done, this is getting a new Shawplan roof grille and fan, and if it ever turns up, a PH Designs detailing kit.

This was the start of weathering on the 7mm 52, it's now finished but I'll post pictures next week.

Now this has turned out rather well. This is the 2mm 3d printed class 128. Nearly finished, I have just clagged the marker lenses on for the photo. They need to be trimmed and set into the headcode boxes properly. Mark my words, 3d printing will be the next big thing in model railways when it matures.

and last one for this evening, the 2mm HST has been weathered. I also added the very nice etched brake discs that you can just make out in the pictures. Well worth the effort.

Some of the roofs on the mk3's were a very strange grey, I have only ever known them painted black on the prototype. So I painted them all to match.

Had to trim the very nicely detailed cab bulkhead along the edges as I missed the fact it wouldn't fit back in with all of the wiring. Oops!

16737987110_4e86292dcb_o.jpg028 by rothburyuk, on Flickr

And then out into the garden to photograph a couple of large beasties I have been working on. The Heljan 40 has been done as one of my favourite Gateshead examples, all transfers kindly supplied by Steve at Railtec. I repainted the nose ends as they looked a bit too orangey to me, new leccy flashes, weathering, and a bit of interior detail painting. I still want to do some detail weathering, and the cab is crying out for a driver.

Those 7mm 40s are superb And you have done a cracking job on that one. I must say I like the heft more than their smaller class 37 cousins. A 40 in railfreight grey would have been a beast haha.
