Hi all,

Thanks Tim!

Thanks David, slow progress at the moment!

Cheers Neil and Swifty, it is a great model! Shame it isn't mine!

Over the next couple of weeks I am looking to get the cement works sprayed, we will see how that pans out!

Thanks for all the kind comments,

Will

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi All,

Over the past couple of weeks I have been considering a change to my layout. Following a lot of thought I have decided to change Southwich to a portable end to end layout. It will contain two 4ft by 2ft boards and a fiddle yard at each end. The main feature of the scenic section will be five cement silos, forming a cement terminal, losely based around the former Blue Circle terminal at Northenden.

So far I have built the two main baseboards and ordered C & L 00 guage points and fasTrack which arrived yesterday. Hopefully I will make a start on building the kits with my grandfather this week. Here are a few photos of progress so far:

Any feedback is much appreciated,

Thanks,

Hi All,

Thanks David, the new track does look good!

A little progress has been today, I have added two alignment tools onto the boards which will allow me to join the two boards easily and get them to the same height and position every time, which is ideal for a portable layout. A few photo to follow:

Over the next few days I am going to start building the c&l points.

Any feedback is much appreciated,

Thanks,

Will

Hi All,

Today I resumed work on the point, finishing everything except the two tie bars. Also the laser cutting has arrived for the silos, which me and my dad will start building in the next few days. A few photos to follow:

Whilst Will has been putting the first point together I have been busy working on the design for the silos. As different parts have become available we have made a start on getting the silos ready for assembly.

Here are a few photos showing the silos sat on the board to see how they will look.

The next job is to get the bases ready to allow the silos to be assembled.

Thanks Class66, once the silos get the bases attached you will be able to get a better idea of how they will look.

The silos will be the main feature of the layout.

Hopefully we can get them assembled later this week and subject to the weather a coat of grey primer added as well.

This evening I have been working on the circular section which sits at the bottom of the silo. The parts that sit in between the support legs and the bottom of the silo have been glued on.

Hopefully tomorrow I can get the support legs glued on to the bases and these circular sections glued to the silos.

Thanks class66, it is coming on.

This evening I decided to see how the base looked with the silo added:

I then decided to see how all five would look next to each other, whilst they have just been plonked down it gives a good idea of what we are trying to achieve. Albeit on the kitchen table......

Great work on the silos!

Once you start building your own points, there's no going back!

The C&L point kits are a great starting 'point' - once you've built the first, you can simply buy the components.

Then, you'll be making your own vees and blades ....

Thanks David.

Hi Class60lover, I do think we need a few more 60s! I keep saying to Will that a Construction livery class 60 would look nice sat at the cement terminal on PCAs.....

Thanks MM, I am very pleased with them so far, once sprayed concrete colour and weathered they should hopefully look pretty good.

I completely agree, although it isn't me that has made the point! After seeing Will's point and comparing it to the Peco version, as you say, there is no going back!

I have a few points needed for Boxenby so will definitely be making my own, although not sure about the vees and blades!.....

This afternoon we assembled and glued the bases:

Hopefully later in the week I can get the silo tubes glued to the bases and the tops added.
