RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted February 10, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 10, 2014 (edited) There is a lovely entry on a yahoo group called loconotes. They issue updates to the UP loco roster every month and January's changes have just been posted. This is an extract. Union Pacific January 2014 Roster Changes by SGW New SD70AH Deliveries (11 units):UP 8824-8834 (Note 1) New Steam Delivery (1 unit):UPP 4014 ....................... I believe that they have to register any motive power that is going to be towed dead on mainline tracks. UP 4014 is a large modern diesel but UP also owns various other prefix's ( can't remember what the correct plural is for that) including all the roads they have taken over eg SP, WP, MP, CNW etc and sometimes use them for purposes such as this. Michael Delamar
When is it scheduled to move again and will it be straight to Cheyenne or will it be stopping off to be displayed a few more times?
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted February 10, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 10, 2014 As far as I know it's not due to move till March and there are likely to be some stopping points on the way. After all they will more than likely be doing the 20mph that they did getting to Colton so UP will obvioulsy get all the good PR they can with obvious points such as Las Vegas, Salt lake City and ogden. I suspect that there will be some live webcam coverage again of places like Cajon pass, weber canyon and Sherman Hill. Jamie
Michael Delamar
thanks Jamie, also wonder if they have started moving the diesel into the museum?
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted February 10, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 10, 2014 I suspect that that's going on as we write. The diesel was moved into the fairplex grounds the same night the big boy was extracted, moving under it's own power with a caboose and a boxcar. The boxcar is apparently for the museum to use for document storage. I know that they want to do some work on the Big Boy at West Colton in particualr to get the air brakes working on the rear engine unit and tender. However my guess is that the 3105 is moving across the car park first. Jamie
Chris Turnbull
May I say I have been gripped by this thread. Having very little knowledge (until recently) of North American railroads this has been a real eye-opener. I've even bought the Pentrex DVDs "Last of the Giants". Fantastic stuff, what impressive machines. Cheyenne in 2019 perhaps? Regards Chris Turnbull Edited February 13, 2014 by Chris Turnbull

RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted April 4, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 4, 2014 4014 appears to have been given a short test run recently in West Colton yards: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=476124&nseq=2 Thanks for that. I did see an entry on the Trains News wire to say that the steam crew had come back to Colton and it was going to be moved over the pits in the Diesel maintenance depot which if I've got the location of that picture correct is behind the photographer on the other side of the bridge where the photo was taken from. Apparently the steam crew were also on standby for manning the rotary snowploughs which stillhae steam powered auzilliaries, so the main move couldn't take place until after the winter. It's due to move later this month. Jamie

RMweb Premium BR60103 Posted April 25, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 25, 2014 Does that mean that they'll have to renumber one of them as they did with 844?
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted April 25, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 25, 2014 Does that mean that they'll have to renumber one of them as they did with 844? They may do as they've done that with the Challenger 3985 which comes in the middle of a block of modern diesels, one of which was renumbered. At the moment the Big Boy has been officially numbered as UPP 4014 and registered on the national computer system. UPP is the prefix they use for their fleet of passenger cars. When it becomes an operating loco they may well have to renumber it in to the main UP series, but that won't be for a few years. The registration has only to be done if it's to move across the network. Jamie
