rob D2
I like the smell of humbrol, rail tach has written all over it how it will kill you if you so much as look at it.
angell328
Hope you all had a Merry Christmas peeps! I have had a nice Christmas break so far seeing family etc, but today was back to the serious stuff of ballasting. Yes I find this part as tedious as most of you I expect, although I have had a few interesting developments. I have the main lines and station area all ballasted in but wasn't quiet happy with the looks, plus it was refusing to stay in place. I have a feeling my PVA is past it's best so has been chucked, together with the ballast I had laid! Yep fed up with it so a small scraper and hoover soon made light work of getting it all up again. This time I used the much smaller grain gravel I had left over from my 2mm endevours, much better to my eye. I also found it much easier to lay using the ballast dispensing hopper (Thanks for the lend Mr B). Once I had put a nice line of ballast down the track with the hopper, a quick brush to even everything out and several taps with the handle it was looking spot on! (bar a few areas that need a tweak) The tapping with the paintbrush handle is the equivalent of real life tamping, getting all those grains even and tight! As ever though the ballast ran out long before the track did, so fingers crossed shop has some in tomorrow. Also I finally found the box half my book are hiding in, so can finally tell you where I found the details of my Dutch shunter: The liveries of the BR standard diesel electric shunters in colour (1952-1996) Few pictures below of the cover and page in question. The inner page is deliberatly out of focus to save copyright infringement etc. Cheers for reading Matt
steveb860
Very neat looking ballasting job there Matt. Looks like the same Woodland scenic fine ballast I used on the depot board. Glad the spreader box is of use, certainly looks t speed things up from the usual tea spoon method!!!

angell328
Cheers guys, Been having a tinker with building placement today until I can pick up some more ballast tomorrow. Also finished of the freight transfer shed roof as the second lot of sticky back corrigated sheeting arrived. Hopefully it has now got the look of a private owner facility rather than an engine shed I have cobbled together! Shall be mocking up an interior for it over next few days to see if my idea will work. Looking forward to finishing off the station ballasting as I can the start fitting the platform edging etc and really making a start on the scenics. As ever comments, hints, tips and suggestions welcome Cheers Matt

Satan's Goldfish
Looking good Matt, getting a feel for it with buildings and platform sides added. Any advance on the crane yet? I keep thinking I should get in gear on the support carriages just in case but I'm not that organised at the moment.
angell328
Happy New Year to you all, Hope you all saw the New Year in with a good fashion, I very nearly saw it in working on the layout, but Mrs decided to stay up and keep me company on the couch drinking! Satan you will be happy to hear that my large bundle of plasticard has been dispatched and is on route for the hacking and bashing to progress. When I start yours I shall be also making a start on my Mk 2 Crane with the extras we talked about, will be resurrecting my crane thread for that so keep your eyes pealed buddy! As for Sodem, well had some fun laying plaster down for the concrete apron at the unloading terminal, seems to have gone down reasonably level with only minor sanding and scraping required. To stop the plaster running away I used some old balsa wood the same thickness as rail height and just floated the plaster to it. To get the required flange gap once the rails had been filled with plaster I used one of my old wagons with the huge Lima wheelsets in. A few runs back and forth with this cut the gaps into the soft plaster and only required minimal cleaning and a run over with track rubber. Once plaster was dry I cut two grooves in to set a rail in each for my unloading crane to run on. All of this was done with the help of a very valuable tool that Mr B got me for Christmas Very nice drop and certainly helps ease the dullness of watching plaster dry!! Well dinner is calling me now but hopefully I shall be back round garage again tonight to finish off some ballasting now I have new bag of that. Cheers Matt

steveb860
I think you should leave the plaster well alone now, and park up a flangeways snow plough !! Job done. And no, you can't have mine
angell328
Funny you should mention a snow plough, you should see the state of the other board, floor, table and me, completely covered in plaster, plaster dust and water! Been fun though! It's ballasting time now, just loaded up my phone with about 4 hours worth of Pendulum and Muse, that should keep me going until either the ballasting is done, of the Port has run out!! Laters Matt
angell328
Well 4 hours later and a load of Ballasting done! Also made a new door for the warehouse Drilled holes for the portacabin electrics and sited them. Once the plaster has had a good few days to really dry out it will get its first coat of concrete paint, then the building can start to go down permanently. Oh and also made a very large dent into the bottle of Port! Night Peeps! Matt

Sandwich&AshfordMR
Great to see a slightly different method to how I have just created my concreted TMD area. Looks very much the part set around the ballasting you have done. Will you be painting the concrete area? Cheers
angell328
Evening All, Thanks for your words of encouragement, nice to know I am keeping you entertained as much as I am entertaining myself! Yep the concrete pads will be sprayed up in suede coat, give a nice colour and texture, will get a picture of the can when I start painting. Yep will be coming down to Calne show, be on the Sunday I expect as Mr B will have the day off work. May have time for a quick play on Pallet Lane, but definitly have enough time to talk Land Rovers! Today I have had the hot glue gun out and used it to fit the platform sides into there final position. Sure makes life a lot easier to stick as you go with a rake of coaches parked up for clearance. I do like the view on the Station approach with the curve of Platform 2. After that I laid some more plaster for the concrete hard standing at the MPD Same process as before, made shuttering out of balsa wood to stop the plaster running away and then poured it in place. When it was nearly set I got the large flanged Lima wagon out to cut the flangeways. Oh Mr B as you can see I do have my lifting Jacks, so yes you did pass them back my way! As that was drying I also made an interior raised floor in the warehouse, forgot to take any pictures of that though. Will make sure I get some when it hits the painting bench. Cheers Matt
steveb860
Ah, so I have two sets of lifting jacks then. Progress looking good, like the idea of the hot glue gun for the platform edging. Are they rigid? Might suggest Halfords grey and a dusting of Suede coat for the concrete (mainly because I don't want you using the whole tin lol, I need it back at some point!!) Looks like I have booked off Friday and Saturday of Calne show weekend, but need to confirm. You still popping over for a run out to DCC supplies tomorrow?
angell328
It appears that you do for some reason! Yep still be over yours for 9am tomorrow, need to get some airbrush spares whilst I'm there too. Yep got a bit of tonal variation in mind for the concrete, but have found a supplier local who stocks the Suede coat, so we wont be running out soon! I was very surprised by just how ridged the platform edging is with the glue gun holding it in place, wont be going anywhere quick. Will be spot on for the plaster platform top. Cheers Matt
angell328
Hi Peeps, Well over the last few days I have been a busy bee laying more ballast and working out where buildings etc will go. Also been test laying the cable trunking to see how it looks. Painted up one of the concrete pads with a textured paint, but I'm not a great fan of the results, bit over scale for 4mm. So I expect i shall be scraping the textured part off and sticking with my spray paint! Shall spray up the MPD with the concrete paint and see how it looks before making a decision on if I will remove the texture. Also remembered to get some pics of the loading dock I have built for the inside of the warehouse, just knocked it up out of some bits of balsa wood I had laying around. I'm sure it will look the part once it has been painted and detailed, if not it's a good pattern! Well hopefully in the next few weeks the layout will really come on as I am moving from days to shift, shall have a lot more free time on my hands for model rail work. angell328
Morning All, Been a while since I have been on with an update, pesky work keeps getting the way. Plus snapped a halfshaft on the Landy other day, so had to get the spanners out! Anyway back to the Layout. Have been busy building the platforms and walls this week, lots of cutting and stitching of plasticard. As you can see not completely finished yet as I have run out of plasticard! Finally come up with an idea for the platform 3 parcels area to mould into the backscene. I am going to have a royalmail distribution warehouse butt upto the rear of the platform and be low relief into the corner backscene. This will allow loading of mail directly from platform the depot and vice-versa plus hide that 90 degree corner. Also whilst digging about in my spares boxes I found a Knightwing/Kiel Kraft Artic and trailer kit that will be spot on for taking steel loads in the road to rail depot. Needs a little bit more scratch building and a paint, but will do job nicely! I have also had the carpentry tools out. I'm not a big fan of square boards as they always look a bit rigid and artificial, espically when photographed, so I have added a contoured edge. Just the tops to be cut out and glued/screwed in place now. Would have liked to have that done by now, but don't think the neighbours would have been to happy with me firing up the jigsaw at 3am! Well that's about it for updates at moment, shall just leave you with my favorite view. Nice to sit and think what needs to be done with a cider whilst looking at this angle Cheers Matt
Satan's Goldfish
Lots of luck bud, really liking the atmosphere it's giving off now. I'm stuck at a certain location in the west midlands for a few weeks on training, keep updating progress so I don't loose the will to live!
angell328
Ahhh the secret Airbase of Morale, don't envy you there buddy. Hopefully have station platforms finished by midweek as the next batch of plasticard should arrive just in time for swingshift! No real progress today as had an emergency 'help my cars broken' text of a mate, so been rolling around under his Mondano today. Shoulds have some more progress in a few days to help keep what little sanity you have left Satan! Matt
