Examples of my weathering...

So then, I was looking at the MXAs - the ones using the BDA chassis.

Appears to me that the deck has been completely removed, so that needs to come off the model too.

Awkward as the chassis is split in 2 - the deck providing most of the strength.

So, I've cut off the side skirts, and I've filed down the deck. Now looks much more realistic.

I'll file some more off the deck to get it that little bit thinner.

Photo with Mk1 box (since changed how I build them) attached:

The angled supports along the length of the wagon I'm gonna leave - there seem to only be 5 on an MXA and they're in different positions. Who knows though, my rivet counter moment might be a permanent affliction.....rivet, rivet.

I may as well come clean... it's not an RS4. Always wanted one but couldn't afford.

Have an RS3 8V in Railfreight Grey - so almost as quick and maybe a bit more stealthy !

Quick coat of Autoglym extra gloss (other polishes are available) today, it's now raining on it so it will be covered in Saharan sand tomorrow morning.....

Here's my old beast, what a beautiful colour she was:

And here's the new one (a year old now). Neighbours like it...

Here is mine in action. Stripped out running 500hp ish. And yes we should have a RM web track day :)

I very much like the blue on your old Audi.............

....anyway back to weathering. This thread has got my enthusiasm up again, I am going to get stuck back into my 16t minerals tomorrow.

500 brake.... I like the sound of that.....and lighter too.... genius....

Box 3 - 75% complete tonight. Best one yet.

I've even used a 1x1.5mm strip underneath - so 1 1.5x1.5 then 2 1.5x1.0 and so on. Not sure anyone will really notice.....

So, no worries on building them.

Might reduce the height a bit on the "next" "one"

Red paint this weekend ??

Wibble. Rivet. Rivet

Strangely, I do like building these. 5 years ago I would never have thought to build my own.

One thing I must do is finish this project off and not leave it part done, hanging around.....

Nice work, and glad to see you back! Makes a change from RHTT sets! How did you take down the height of the BDA wagon? Made bit of a pigs ear on mine!

I forget what blue my S3 was, I loved it, but the paint really showed up light scratches too easily.

Primer is better.....

BDA height reduction, just got my track cutters out, trimmed off the "side skirts". Then I've filed the base down - it's almost flat now with pretty much all the deck detail gone. The bolsters can be taken out easily enough. Think I'm gonna leave it like that.

4 more boxes constructed, I'm giving it a rest now....

The compulsive part of me wants to totally remove the deck, fabricate the supporting frame underneath then put the new box on top.

I really must not do that...

Never stop do I ??

I've been considering the height of the MXAs during this build.

I've now compared them against a BYA/BRA and a Class 66 in photos. Mine are way over height.

So, the last batch of boxes are 13mm plus the 1.5mm strip underneath.

I reckon they are now "right"

Prototype / test build;

Corrected build:

Irritating, but there you go.... they just didn't look right to me.

Nick that looks better. I made one full prototype to gauge the height. After completion I got the correct height sorted and sold on the prototype. I didn't want to hack the deck too much (I have enough jobs on the go already)! Don't forget to put a 45 degree chamfer on all the horizontal bars.

Looking forward to your full rake!

I've been using a network rail JNA to gauge the height as I'd seen a photo of the 2 next to each other and they appear to be the same height.

Hi Rob

I've been using some sprue cutters, occasionally a scalpel - that's for the strips.

For the sheets, a scalpel so far and then snap the board.

Very easy to work with, dare I say pleasant ??

Well, I'm back to where I was this time last week, but this time with 4 "correct" height boxes.......

post-1261-0-85867700-1489089455_thumb.jpg

Some trimming, filing and sanding then I'll be ready to wash them and prime.
