Keith George
Can anyone tell me what livery would be carried by the ex GWR small wheeled prairies of the 44xx class during the few years they served with BR . Would it have been Black, lined black or even green. The last ones were withdrawn during 1955. Regards, Keith.
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted February 19, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 19, 2013 I think they were unlined black. They were certainly not lined in green or black in BR days.
Miss Prism
I'm inclined to agree with CK, but this one is lined, and is probably not correct: http://gwr.org.uk/gallery3/kanas2large.jpg
ozzyo
Un-lined green would work, on one of them it had the mixed traffic livery, but with British Railways in full. 4409 was I think the only one that had B.R. mixed traffic livery. So it would look like plain green or black. OzzyO.
buffalo
Just happened to have the relevant RCTS volume open on the desk: "Repaints were normally unlined black but Nos. 4406/9 received red, cream and grey lining." Beware also differences like presence or absence of outside steam pipes, etc. Nick
RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted February 19, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 19, 2013 A worthwhile book to try and source is the Great Western Small Prairie Tanks by D R Stiff and M Dart. The only drawback is b&w photos and them being filthy too. Keith George
Thankyou very much for all the replies. I had been thinking it was usually unlined black, but needed some confirmation. Thanks again, Keith.
