hmrspaul
Lovely stuff! I have always thought that the period immediately after nationalisation would be a good one to model but apparently there are very few folk interested in it. One of the big manufacturers once told me that anything with BRITISH RAILWAYS in full on the tender/tank side was a poor seller compared to other liveries. I suppose it was short lived but to be able to have LMS and LNER liveries, plus BRITISH RAILWAYS and the early crest and even some express locos in blue would make for a very unusual and interesting layout. Tony It is a very difficult period, not very well recorded - yes lots of loco photos but less of other items. The transition of rolling stock is very difficult to accurately reflect, especially as all aspects of maintenance were in a dreadful mess, so getting stock back on the rails took precedence over any interest in external finish. Passenger stock often simply seems to have had a coat of varnish over the pre-Nat (possibly pre-war) finish. For wagons I've been trying for some time to capture the period of unpainted wood, with painted steel work. I've had some success, but I'm not sure about my most recent effort which is to retain LMS bauxite on an unfitted van, so it has grey steelwork, which then flakes back to rust! 45568
David, I travelled over the Calverton colliery bridge, and under the Haywood Oaks bridge countless times as a lad in the '50's-60's. It always had track underneath it then, I was born in 1951, but I never saw a train under the bridge. Saw a Peak at Haywood Oaks in the mid 60's though! As you say, it always looked like a main line, beautifully laid track, and not until much later, when I lived here in Oz, did I find out much more about this fascinating line and the unfulfilled plans. Can only echo the others,"Keep 'em coming!!" cheers' Peter C. Edit. Just looked on googlemaps, both features can still be seen! coachmann
I was really interested to see the shot of the Royal Carraige as it must have been the one I saw when I was trackside circa 1952. Princess Elizabeth, or she might have been queen, visited North Wales during a countrywide tour. The train passed me on the Down Slow and I ran back to the caravan to tell my parents I had seen the royal train. "How do you know it was royal" asked my dad......"Well it had golden lions heads on the bufferbeams" I replied. That afternoon we went into Abergele town to see her in her car.

Fat Controller
Useful shot of those Sherman tanks, showing how they were secured in transit- bit surprised to see them still about then, though, as I thought the Cromwell, and then the Centurion had superseded them long before.

Nottingham Victoria B1 Nottingham to Sheffield c1950 JVol1127.jpg Nottingham Victoria B1 Nottingham to Sheffield c1950 JVol1127 What a brilliantly 'moody' shot of the Vic, a station that I wish I had visited when it was still open. My school railway society had a visit to the Nottingham area circa 1965 and we visited the Midland station but, for some reason lost in the mists of time, not Victoria. Nice to see the Vic's underslung brackets featuring in shot as well. Many thanks for posting these photos, Dave, they are giving me and a lot of other people much pleasure. In this photo it appears to be numbered E1057. It is known a number of locos around this number carried the E prefix for a short time. coachmann
When I saw British Railways on locos circa 1949 I was a new boy at the trackside and considered it all rather exciting stuff. An older boy, or maybe he was a young man, frowned on my enthusiasm and so I reverted to sticking up for the LMS! But this experience makes me see how younger people view changes on the railway. I might cringe sometimes, just as that chap did in 1949, but if a new livery turns you on, go for it!

The signal post shown is still in situ even though no trains have passed this way in over 50 years! It's normally quite well hidden in the trees now and the trackbed is a rather pleasant leafy walk, despite the main road from Nottingham to Hucknall being just over my shoulder. It would have been the distant for Bulwell Forest I believe. Also can I just mention that in the last picture of the most recent ones you have listed the locos as V2 and K2. The one nearest the camera is an L1 unless I'm very much mistaken. Some marvellous photos, more please!

great central
Hi Dave, sorry I've got pedant mode on again The L1 you have as 67714 can't be as it's a 'split' footplate one. 67714 would have had a curved section between the two footplate levels in front of the smokebox. Given that it's fairly clear the last digit is a 4 it must be at least 67734, I reckon it could be 67774 but without the relevent Yeadon I can't say if that one was allocated to the London area. Perhaps somebody else could clarify?
