“Before his death, Robert Bruce had asked his friend Sir James Douglas – that tall, broad, terrible raider – to carry his heart upon a crusade against the paynim and to bury it by the Sepulchre in the Holy Land. The love he had so miraculously inspired among diverse men was loyal to his memory, and a body of dedicated knights followed Douglas to the nearest fight, against the Moors of Granada. They died with him in battle, surrounded by Saracens and abandoned by their Spanish comrades. Douglas threw the heart of Bruce deep into the enemy, telling it to go first as it had always done, and then plunged after it with his knights, shouting the name of his house.” - from “The Lion in the North”, by John Prebble.

Aberfoyle.

Aberfoyle is located on the Highland-Lowland border, it opens the gateway to the Trossachs over the hill road called the Duke’s Pass.

Scott’s Rob Roy made Aberfoyle famous.

The ex-North British station was closed in the BR era.

Selsdon  on the Surrey / greater London border. No longer has a station

It had a V shaped station with two platofrm on the SOuth Croydon to Sanderstead and Oxted lines wthat closed in the late 50's I beleieve.

The other two platforms were on the Sanderstead to Elmers End line that shut in 1983.  Track still down in one of them but heavily overgrown.

The centre of the place is actually over am ile away up the hill and is on a good bus route network.

Yes, we used to catch the 234 bus from Purley Fountain which went to Selsdon, although we got off half-way to see friends.

Nogent le Rotrou, a charming mid-size town about an hour from here.
