cornish trains jez
Littlehampton today. Two superb gantry signals and a very unique signal box. Ian There used to be a lovely old goods shed near the station but it got pulled down to be replaced with nothing. Seems pointless, it should have been saved!! RMweb Premium phil-b259 Posted October 6, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 6, 2013 For those interested the Arun valley re signalling is running behind schedule. The contractors apparently have not got enough time to 'soak test' the equipment and NR are unwilling to let it go in unless the full testing regime has been completed. Thing is with all the work going on elsewhere in Sussex over Christmass, if could well be next Easter before the next slot comes available.
RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted October 6, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 6, 2013 Running a tight schedule network-wide something was bound to give at some point. If nothing else this gives a little precious time to go and capture images of the semaphores and boxes at work. As well as helping to keep some jobs on the railway just a little longer. It shouldn't have any effect on the timetable - that can operate quite happily so long as Amberley remains switched in. It's a sobering thought that Amberley might have been razed to the ground years ago and replaced with tin shelters had the occasional need for its signalbox not been retained. It wasn't in regular all-day use until the present timetable with Horsham splits came in. We still have a lovely little country station with an uncommon integral signal box alongside and serving what is now a significant museum of local and regional history and with every chance it will be maintained in a reasonable condition once the frame is finally decommissioned. RMweb Premium phil-b259 Posted October 6, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 6, 2013 A new signal is in situ at the end of platform 1. I do note that it is in front of the 9-12 car stop sign, which is interesting as there are at least two northbound peak-time 12 carriage trains during That is probably because the distance between the points and the semaphore doesn't comply with current standards forcing either the crossover to be moved or the new signal to be located where it is (the latter being the cheaper option). As regards train lengths SDO will be used for the 12 car trains (as now) although if the new signal position prevents 8 car trains from fitting the platform extensions might be considered. Immediately opposite the box are two new signals, yet to be erected. They are beside the trailing cross-over to the north of the station; presumably they are to guard this cross-over Signalling is being installed at both Pulborough and Billingshurst to allow terminating trains to start heading south from the up platforms removing the need for shunt moves. Shunt signals are being retained to allow trains from London to terminate in the down platforms then shunt via the crossover to the up platform as happens now. Which presumably means Billingshurst box will remain in situ until that time. I only mention this because I have heard that some (more!) new housing development is being planned for Billingshurst, but cannot be started until the crossing has been widened - access issues and traffic volumes etc. etc.

Managed to get the semaphore in but just missed the end of the passing train! photo.JPG That's an interesting view point. Looks like it was taken from the doctor's surgery, or the block next door. I live about a minute's walk from this location, so if publicly accessible, that would make a great vantage point.
Pete 75C
Top floor flat in Wey House I reckon. My brother was looking at buying there as a Monday-Friday pad to cut down on his commute. He was put off by the trains though. What is wrong with him..?

David32424
A couple of pictures I took at Hampden Park Station when Tornado came down the use the cross over to gain access to the up line for a rail tour from Lewes to Salisbury back on 5th July. Sadly Hampden Park signal box will be demolished soon but at least Eastbourne and Polegate Crossing boxes will be saved. If you bring up the zoom option on the shot of Tornado heading to Willingdon Junction you can see the semaphore signals in the distance. https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/24UOkfkz8n9ebeD2Ol6_rtMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/uUeeseWL928-jO441OS12NMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink
cornish trains jez
Good morning all, I was over in Amberley yesterday and decided to stop via the station and grab a few snaps. I also spoke to a couple of gents who mentioned that the semaphores were due to go soon and that they were hoping to save them for the Amberley museum. Lets hope they can! Best regards, Jeremy
The Bigbee Line
Here are some pictures of the semaphore signals at Falmer: Signal 3 Falmer Up Starting. A Southern Railway Rail Built Signal Signal 4 Falmer Up Advanced Starting. The main post is rail built with a lattice doll. Originally there was another lower arm on the same doll; this was Signal 5 Falmer Up Warning. Used to allow trains forward towards Kemp Town Junction when the normal safety clearance was not available beyond the Home signal at Kemp Town Junction. The signal is a bracket to improve sighting on the left hand curve. Signal 18 Falmer Down Advanced Starting. A Southern Railway Rail Built Signal Signal 19 Falmer Down Starting. A Southern Railway Rail Built Signal Signal 20 Falmer Down Home. The main post is rail built with a lattice doll. The signal is a bracket as it originally spanned No.1 Down Siding (Access to Brighton Corporation Waterworks Siding)

RMweb Premium Claude_Dreyfus Posted March 14, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 14, 2014 Well, today is the day. There are farewell banners on both Pulborough and Billingshurst boxes marking the end; they (and presumably Amberley) will close for the last time at the end of the shift this evening. RIP
RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted March 14, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 14, 2014 I ma down past Amberley tomorrow morning so will miss the last shift. Luckily I have taken quite a few photos recently at these locations. I presume that Bognor and Littlehampton have a little while yet?

Luckily I have taken quite a few photos recently at these locations. I presume that Bognor and Littlehampton have a little while yet? I don't believe either Bognor or Littlehampton are effected by these changes. If you pass Amberley tomorrow, it will be by bus (assuming you were talking about using the train) as the Arun Valley route is closed for the resignalling over the weekend. P.S. The replacement bus services start tonight, so the last train along with Arun Valley will be the 20:32 from Victoria

RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted March 15, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 15, 2014 This morning we called in at Amberley station. The semaphore signals were still in place but the box is now closed. RMweb Premium Claude_Dreyfus Posted March 15, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 15, 2014 Work is well underway at Pulborough... The up starter has been cut down, with the top half being craned into the car park. Look away now if you are easily upset! The down starter stands sentinel awaiting its fate. Note the rather odd-shaped signal pole behind. Looking north, the new signal can be seen in the distance, behind the doomed gantry The view from the bridge north of the station looks very bare now... All very sad, with all this history, character and presumably the livelihoods of the signal men who operated the three boxes along with route, disappearing this weekend. I do wonder if the staff involved have been redeployed, or in some cases retired. Whatever the situation, our thoughts are with them.
