Assorted EMU photos from 1960s etc.

My sister back in the UK has been scanning my father's railway photos and sending them to me (I live in New Zealand). There's more tha a few EMU shots around Redhill and Croydon so thought you might like to have a look-see.

The only descriptions I have are the filenames (taken from Dad's description on the slide or photo) and I know there's a few mistakes, but I have left them as-is.

Enjoy.

I haven't been through them all, yet, but I agree with Nigel. Some very interesting and rare ones in there too (there's a class 210 unit in one of them!).

I thought (?) there was only one class 210? Not sure where that one was taken.

I am seriously thinking about making up one of those "publish yourself" books, so at some point I might need help identifying some of the units in the photos. For instance:

and particularly:

This last shot shows a Crompton hauling some ex-electric stock. Now I seem to recall seeing somewhere that some old EMU stock as marshalled as loco-hauled stock but now I want to find the information I can't.

Kind regards

John

There were two 210s, a 4-car and a 3-car. Different engines I think, and a first-class car in one of them, although I think the coaches got swapped around a bit.

Location could be Reading depot, if SR units on Basingstoke/Reading services ever stabled/fuelled there -  the 210s tended to work Thames Valley locals, so that's about the only place they'd regularly be seen together.

A quick look in Wikipedia (yes I know it isn't always accurate but in this case it is!) reveals that the four car unit, 20 001, had a Paxman engine while the three car, 210 002, had an MTU unit. They also started with different internal arrangements, with 210 001 having outer suburban seating and toilets, and 210 002 having high density inner suburban seating. As eastwestdivide said, they did swap vehicles and arrangements around a bit, in line with their experimental status.

Those look like 2-HAL units, the first one's a bit dark, but the second one definitely, as you can read unit no 2678 off the large version

Ditto for http://www.flickr.com/photos/86615534@N06/8664408472/in/set-72157633281123435/

But this is a 2-BIL: http://www.flickr.com/photos/86615534@N06/8664406438/in/set-72157633281123435/

And re the Trans-Clyde DMU at Redhill in http://www.flickr.com/photos/86615534@N06/8663301947/in/set-72157633281123435/ - I'm pretty sure some DMUs were transferred down to Reading from Scotland when the services via Guildford and Redhill changed over from SR 3-R DEMUs. But as the other pics show (e.g. http://www.flickr.com/photos/86615534@N06/8664398122/in/set-72157633281123435/), the Cl 119 cross-country DMUs were much more common (initially - early 80s) on those services.

I am working (slowly) to compile a photo album of some of the shots using www.my-books.com

I thought choosing the photos was enough of a challenge, but researching the captions is a lot of work too - but good fun. I kind-a took BR for granted as a kid, but since my "attack" of nostalgia I am reading and learning a lot.

Being one of the print-on-demand books it is not going to be cheap (relatively), but I'll do a couple and my sister can have one as a "thank you" for all the work she's done scanning these photos.

I am not sure if Dad knew (probably, he had been interested in railways for years before joining BR), but a lot of the photos he took were in the twilight years of "whatever". Like the steam at Redhill being only months before the locos were withdrawn. I'm finding it REALLY interesting, and the fact that they were taken by my Father even more so.
