RMweb Gold farren Posted November 26, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 26, 2022 (edited) Well after the great excitement of Hornby’s announcement today still no L&YR 0-6-0 I thought I’d look at the L&YR coach. It went well I built a motor and cut some metal for a rail bus. Still trying to work out how I can fit everything including a DCC decoder and some representation of the interior. Well adding weight to help with the running image of the real thing added. Edited November 26, 2022 by farren
RMweb Gold farren Posted November 27, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 27, 2022 I was thinking of using 1/8 internal tube for the wheels and just being lazy about the chassis using the flat plate show above. But I got a thinking about the possibility of the tube not being square and how to fit the motor etc. so I decided not to mess about and build a parallel frame chassis saves on the thinking and makes things easier in the long run.
RMweb Gold farren Posted November 28, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 28, 2022 (edited) Still waiting for the wheels and got a little bored so I thought I’d try a little painting I think the cream is a little too yellow especially in the image. Might be the lighting what is making it worse. I’ll have a look for another cream tomorrow when out and about. now looking at the images on the screen it is far to yellow for my liking. But the model isn’t too bad. The wheels are a bit crude and some separate bought wheels might be in order depending how much space is available to fix them securely when the thing is on the rail chassis. Have to wait and see. RMweb Gold farren Posted December 4, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 4, 2022 (edited) Still no sign of the wheels. So Re did the roof, which I think is much better. Managed to do the destination head bored and the little signs done the sides. Fitted some working lamps just need to see how to wire them up to a dcc decoder which will be fun. Other than that I redid the Fowler tank now on the newer Hornby chassis which improves the look of the model. The dirt on the top seems more noticeable in the image then it is in real life. Cameras are strange things. Edited December 4, 2022 by farren
RMweb Gold farren Posted January 4, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 4, 2023 Well the wheels didn’t fit so need to source smaller wheels for the bus. In the meantime I got sidetracked. Bought some tanks and things to go with some Bachman LMS war flats. Will get some trucks and artillery pieces to add to some other wagons. The models are resin and a bit of a so & so to paint. Maybe but some kits next time would make life easier. But live and learn.
RMweb Gold farren Posted February 18, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 18, 2023 (edited) Well typical modeller started of doing one thing not finished of course and then went onto 5 different jobs, the Armed train will be finished but it needs a couple more wagons, not to mention the blue and green don’t look correct after finding some better images taken by a friend. So I went and cheered myself and bought 8 new coaches, has you do one to get next month, and on order a loco when it’s available 6222. I did some modelling fed up with empty wagons going round I thought I’d try making some tarpaulins trying different papers Andrex (green one ) some packing paper free with what ever I bought and Rizla which seems to look the best. Though very tricky to work with when wet. Weathered a few wagons and dug out two Bachmann short pipe wagons, and bashed them into the LMS tube wagons just need painting Edited February 18, 2023 by farren
RMweb Gold farren Posted February 18, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 18, 2023 (edited) Dose any one have Knowledge on upgrading the old Mainline/ Hornby 14ton tank wagons I bought 3 Cambrian open chassis. Just popped on the frame under the main line cradle for now. Edited February 18, 2023 by farren
RMweb Gold farren Posted February 19, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 19, 2023 Well the tank wagon is well on the way, need to connect the diagonal brace wires to the chassis and fit a brass ladder, the top platform might need to be meddled with, but all in all a model has shaped up nicely. Real Image from bluebell railway I believe.

Nice job on the build, hope suitable wheels reward your work asap!
RMweb Gold farren Posted February 24, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 24, 2023 (edited) Hi Chas, thank you yes it’s quite a nice little model, it well be finished one day. when the weather warms up I’ll be able to work in the conservatory, I have a feeling any wheels that fit will probably have smaller then one 1/8 axles. So will need a new chassis cutting, no cutting metal in the house. on tanker front, I’ve fitted some brass ladders to the first three well waiting for transfers to arrive. In the meantime I started the next three built the same way but have ditched the buffers that come with the kit in favour of some white metal ones much better I think. I think the first ones my have to have the white metal buffers fitted now they do look so much better. RMweb Gold farren Posted March 4, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 4, 2023 Managed a little modelling over the last few days, six tankers are now ready for transfers hopefully they’ll turn up next week get those six finished before doing the rest. In the meantime I found a LNWR/LMS chemical pan wagon hiding in the cupboard. Bought this before Falcon Brass went south for the second time. The instructions are pretty pointless. I have yet to fit the wheels, but need to make sure I get everything I the right place so it runs correctly. No marks or tabs to aid in this so should be interesting to say the least.
RMweb Premium Chas Levin Posted March 4, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 4, 2023 The chemical pan wagon's interesting looking, not seen one before. Very impressive rivet detail - is that added by you? I've only built one Falcon kit and like most others, found it challenging, but workable! The tanker fleet is very nice looking too; not sure it'll help keep your carbon footprint down though... 😁
Jol Wilkinson
Is this a D106 wagon? LRM have a kit for that Diagram in their range introduced a few years ago, probably because the Jidenco/Falcon Brass one wasn't easy to find (or possibly build). Challenge it is the Axle carrier plates are fun! No aid in lining them up at all. I would have thought they soldered to the underside of the top plates and the vertical plates of the wagon. But no that’s to easy, the wheels can’t lift the wagon of the ground. They’re soldered on the vertical plate only about 3mm from the top and if you solder the front of the plate to the back of the buffer beam you can’t get the wheels in! One image might show you better Sorry soldering a bit messy. But can’t get in to clean it up without the buffer beam or side plates dropping of as there only butt joints and like to fall of with any heat. has for the tankers might have to get some Stop Oil protesters and stick them to the tankers 4

I haven’t a clue, it’s so long since I bought it I’ve forgotten. I do have an image in a book somewhere when I find it I’ll post the information. I’ll have a look at the LRM site when I have a few minutes. For some reason I thought I’d ordered a glass carrying wagon form Falcon but not to worry will have to go hunting for one now.
Jol Wilkinson
Bill Bedford/Mousa Models did an LNWR glass wagon. I have two but they are no longer on the MM list. I think they may have been cast resin whereas Bill only does 3D printed or etched stuff now. 1
RMweb Gold farren Posted March 6, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 6, 2023 (edited) I found a link for the pan wagon which I’ll pop here which might be useful to someone. My wagon needs a little more work but, it runs freely and should be fine a layout wagon. Need to add some weight and a touch up on the paint here and there. RMweb Gold farren Posted March 14, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 14, 2023 (edited) Well I found why the transfers for the tank wagons haven’t turned up I forgot to agree to the terms, so I went to the website and there they where still in the shopping cart, so ordered so transfers for a LNER Horsebox at the same time. Been a week of finishing off. The pan wagon is done, the L&YR Brake van as see work to full strip and re paint into LMS livery and even re-painted a LNER Horse Box it was in BR livery. All need coupling’s fitted but for a change I actually have these in stock plus glue so there’s a turn up for the books. Oh yea new buffers are on their way for both the brake van and Horse box. RMweb Gold farren Posted March 22, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 22, 2023 Well waiting for the transfers paid for this time! The weather has improved enough to do some work in the conservatory. So cracked out the soldering iron. The L&YR coach had been looking at me all winter. It just didn’t set quite right so I untacked the body and rebuilt it. Added the grab rails. Today I built the inside and given it an under coat need to find the correct top coat for it. Looks much better. Though not sure about the grab rails but the hole where there. I had been looking for a twin gas tank wagon to build found a APOC twin tank so ordered that instead. After researching the gas tank it seems only the GWR twin is available in OO. Looking at the drawings and reading the books the LMS twin seems to be built on a 12 wheel base LNWR chassis. So I’m currently put the gas twin on hold until I find a LNWR chassis to use for a scratch build project. On the plus side we’ll look for bits for it on the Wizard site I might have bought a L&YR 20ton coal wagon.
RMweb Gold farren Posted March 26, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 26, 2023 Ordered the L&YR paint for the coach, 3 times! Twice to receive a email saying the paint is out of stock so went to phoenix paints in the end only to be told the paint is out of stock and will be shipped when it’s back in. A few days hopefully. So did the roof detail which I was putting off but it seemed to go okay. There’s supposed to be pipes linking the gas lamps to the two parallel pipes. Though those are so small I decided to skip them I don’t think it’s too noticeable and I didn’t want to risk melting to casting 6
RMweb Gold farren Posted March 28, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 28, 2023 (edited) Been doing a bit of work on the APOC tank, rather enjoying this little kit. The ends and tanks are aren’t fixed to the chassis yet but it’s showing promise the models seems to be built for P4. / EM so will have to get a set of Axles to get it on its wheels. But other than that the model gose together relatively easily. Edited March 28, 2023 by farren 7
RMweb Gold farren Posted March 31, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 31, 2023 The paints turned up for the coach though the colour on the real thing doesn’t have changed in light. Work so far a little touch of paint needed to where one colour drops below the dividing line but quite happy with it so far.
RMweb Gold farren Posted April 13, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 13, 2023 Not much real modelling done this week, but have been playing with a new HM7000 decoder, it’s not bad but I think it’s going to end up in a black5 or something. 2 cylinder Royal is just plain wrong. Also managed to get the signal controller to talk to my gauge master controller only taken ages. Lights to wire up another, Off course the princess Royal decides to derails of shot when videoing, you can hear it stop.
Buhar
Hi Farren, I saw your remarks on the main HM7000 thread. That seems quite a glitch as Hornby have been priding themselves on the origins of their sound files (often with good reason). I wonder if it's a fat-finger issue during the uploads as mixing a four cylinder with a two isn't easy if your ears are attuned. Did you try the Duchess sound file? RMweb Gold farren Posted April 28, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 28, 2023 (edited) Thought I’d start off with a perfectly good working Rebuilt Patriot, then i take everything off it, and chuck in the bin! (Not really it’s in a bits box) fit some Gibson wheels and some big bosses that stand out on the prototype. After which you have a cup of coffee and worry if this idea is such a good thing and is it going to work.! the kit is jidenco and it has the parts to do both the small and large boilers version, Caprotti and has the smoke deflectors. And the option of the cutdown cab. Hornby chassis is a straight swap the bogie will need to be shunted forward about 5mm I haven’t measured the hacksaw and grinder will be needed to help it fit and swivel. The cylinders need a cut in the chassis to allow them to fit. So nothing to extreme. The tender is another question i could use the one in the kit or Bachmann do both the LNWR one from their super D or the ROD 2-8-0 tenders which would save time and bother. Plus it leave bits for a second loco if I ever want. So the question becomes which locomotive, large boiler I think and that’s had far has I’ve got. here’s some photos Edited April 28, 2023 by farren 5
