RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted May 21, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 21, 2013 Made a point of looking as we went past on the train and no sign of a coach. Ian

I love those trap points, protecting the main from anything that might run away up that incline

RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted September 20, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 20, 2013 I wonder if it was trying to shift the whole lot at once? P
cromptonnut
I wonder if it was trying to shift the whole lot at once? P In the first shot I count 10 wagons, and in the second shot I can count at least 6, so it could well be. Quite suprised it managed actually if it did. Pete 75C
Thanks for the link to those pics - nice. I started in 83 and don't remember 08/09s at Holmethorpe. We always used to assemble the train and drag it up the bank with a Crompton before running round at Redhill. Thanks again.
John Oxlade
Checking photos (specifically the 2nd in post #17), I don't think that the second shed road joined back in at the incline end of the exchange yard. I now have a good selection of photos of the exchange sidings, but very few from the incline end. There were definitely 3 loops, and the engine shed track went right through and out the back, but the 4th loop/2nd loco shed track doesn't appear to join back in. Does anyone have any photos to confirm or deny this? Actually, it'd be really handy if someone could come up with a photo of the pointwork at the incline end of the yard, and ANYTHING of the track layout the other side of the quarry line over-bridge. Thanks, John
John Oxlade
Oh, and a bit of a "PS"... What BR locos would have ventured into the exchange sidings over the years? I saw 08s, others have seen 33s down there, but what about before that? I know Norwood was host to some 04s in the 60s, but would they have ventured to Redhill? And what about steam days?
roythebus
There's quite a bit of info on Holmethorpe elsewhere on this site if you do a search. ISTR my son posted me a link to the local Merstham Historical society pages. KESR loco Marcia used to work there many years ago!
John Oxlade
I am aware of the various Holmethorpe posts - indeed I started one of them. I was looking through my photos and "lifeboatman's" post, and the track plan he provided doesn't seem to tie in with my photos, but I am a bit short of photos from the incline end. Pete 75C
.John, that track plan was from memory and it's now 25 years since I was there. It's just a rough interpretation of what I remember. If it was correct, believe me, I'd be more surprised than anyone! John Oxlade
I think you were very close, but I think (still not sure) that the 4th loop was only a siding with points at the Quarry Line end only.
cromptonnut
If you go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html and enter coordinates 528500, 151500 and select the 1967 1:2500 map extract, sadly the crucial bit is a bit faded on screen resolution but does that help at all? Thanks for that. 3 loops, 1 long siding and 1 short siding thru' the shed. If my 4th loop had been a siding... I was close! No cigar, though. John Oxlade
And if you change to co-ordinates slightly to 528750,151750, you can see the track layout on the other side of the quarry line. Thanks for that, it is really useful.

dasatcopthorne
Hi Guys. I've been thinking about this since the subject started. I worked on the Holmethorpe Industrial estate in 1989 and 1990 and remember seeing wagons in the sidings. I'm sure I took a couple of photos of them but cannot find them at the moment. However, I have come across these below. First two are from 8th July 1989 The second two are from 2nd Nov 1989. Hope they help Dave
