Robatron86
Hi Jason, 5 foot 2 by 1 foot. Still ATSF. Probably looking to push it more into the desert areas. New Mexico, Southern California. I haven't quite decided yet.
switcher 1
Likely you will need a multi spot 'industry' of some kind to get some operational interest. I am new to 'American', but am learning through the guidance of more experienced people & some books. I find it very different from what I am used to seeing in a 'British' layout. Robatron86
Thanks for the NMRA info. I will look into it. I too am new to American railroads, learning step by step. The new project will still be a diesel service area, just bigger.

Adrian Wintle
Me too! An amazing shot of what was common at the time? Best, Pete. What is that PAFA doing in the background (in warbonnet, no less)? Edit. I guess that has to be a PA, even though it doesn't look long enough The passenger Fs look really nice, though. ATSF seem to have held onto their F-units longer than a lot of other RRs who saw value in trading them in on newer power. Adrian
JWB
I'm somewhat familiar with Amarillo, having passed through several times and then having a job assignment there 15 years ago. (A co-worker suggested it might be a good reminder of what the infernal region will be like, if anyone else wants to try it.) I'm at a slight loss to know exactly where the photo was taken, as I believe there were no overbridges near the Santa Fe yard -- better bet might be from the second floor of the depot. The assortment of locos would be typical of the early 1960s. The S-2 between the two sets of Fs in the center makes me think it is hostling them for positioning individually on trains. The locos in the background with the PA in the middle, since they're between two diesel fuel tank cars, makes me think they're in storage. I think it would be extremely unusual, although never say never, to have a single PA in the middle of a consist of freight Fs. However, PAs in multiple did sometimes appear on freights with the PA sets nose to nose with blue Fs, possibly being relayed back to Chicago, Barstow, or wherever. The jumble of locos in the foreground is typical of power on the southern main line during this period. The manufacturers no longer make dummy units, but if you can locate old ones, or junker powered units, a layout with a scene like this would be a good place to use them. The Santa Fe rebuilt its F units to CF7s in the early to mid 1970s. Some railroads did trade Fs in earlier -- the UP got rid of most during the 1960s -- but they remained on most roads well into the 1970s.
trisonic
Southern Arizona around Phoenix offers good modelling opportunities. Take a look at this: http://www.geocities.com/~aeromoe/Peavine.html Best, Pete.

trisonic
Some nice shots there Rob. The locos stand up quite well to close scrutiny. Last time I was in Santa Fe I had dinner at the old Station. Bu@@ered if I can find the photos, though... Best, Pete.
Robatron86
Thanks Pete. My next project is to repaint this: Into this: It's an 2004 Athearn GP38-2. I have already stripped it to it's base components. Just need to take the plunge in removing the BNSF scheme. I am using Microscale decals and using the old oven cleaner technique to strip it.
