DelawareAndHudson
That's a tough one. You could build some mainline modules in secret and then one day they magically appear while your wife is out for a day. Or you go with the old "since I don't have enough room to run trains, I guess I'll just go down to the bar tonight. I hope I don't run into my ex girlfriend...." This maneuver carries some degree of risk so reserve that for a last resort. Maybe you could couple all the locomotives together and then run them back and forth a few inches, sigh, and say "I've used up the whole layout...." Good luck! Robatron86
These are some dangerous and murky waters. This modelling malarky is harder than i thought.
Robatron86
Just for Daniel B And the full train of carriages: That's the next layout they are sat on. Just the board and trackplan are in place at the moment. I will start a new thread when i have started construction.
Robatron86
So, I was having a play with my trains...I mean testing my layout, and I stumbled upon something. First of all, I have made a temporary fiddle yard extension, using the wife's N gauge layout. And I discovered I could use it as an Inglenook shunting puzzle! So I took 4 of the 50ft boxcars. (There is a Norfolk Southern boxcar in the shed) And did a random draw on pieces of paper. It's very handy having 4 very different railroads to chose from. So, here we go: And there you go. I rushed through the sequence, and it was an easy draw, but it's a start and it increases the play value. Hope you all enjoyed.
Robatron86
In other news, my Athearn GP38-2 repaint is going well. Although the blue is the wrong shade. I have found a supplier of Scalecoats for the correct blue, but given the amount of work i have put in so far, i think i will leave this one as it is. Once the decals, weathering and varnish have gone on, it should look ok. Thanks for looking, Rob
DanielB
Have you painted that loco by hand or by airbrush? It looks great either way!
Robatron86
Thanks Daniel . The yellow was airbrushed on first, then I hand painted several thin coats of the blue.
DanielB
I wonder if might get away with hand painting something in N Scale after all then. Cheers!
Adrian Wintle
I wonder if might get away with hand painting something in N Scale after all then. Cheers! Alternatively, pick roads where the painting is simple: PRR freight - brunswick green = Tamiya Nato Black rattle can NS - black = Tamiya Semi-gloss Black rattle can But yes, you can get away with hand-painting in N. In some cases it is essential since masking can be problematic. Adrian
Robatron86
I did contemplate doing some Southern Pacific for that reason. Very very easy. Give it a go Daniel. Water the paint down slightly so if flows better. And make sure its not an expensive Kato beast for your first attempt
Robatron86
Well, I bit the bullet and gave it a go. Painting that curve in was possibly the most nerve-wracking bit of painting I have ever done!
F-UnitMad
Well done with that painting - especially the yellow, which is usually a notoriously difficult colour to do!! Talking of 'simple' liveries, the Soo Line's White & Red is fairly straightforward - because that's exactly why it was designed like that in real life - to be easy & quick to apply, but still distinctive.... but of course, I'm biased... Robatron86
Thanks F-Unit. I had a few attempts with the yellow, I don't think I'll be doing another one anytime soon! Ah, but white can be just as difficult as yellow to paint. And biased, of course not....
DanielB
Green is best.
Robatron86
Having spent most of my childhood painting WW2 bombers, green and brown are the best for handpainting.

Robatron86
Thanks Daniel, although i think i have really hit a plateau with it now. Unless i start detailing it to silly levels.
