Scott's Road diesel depot

My brothers 40th was fast approaching, and I wondered what I could give him as a memorable present. Unlike myself, Scott doesn't have a layout, but has his locos displayed in a cabinet. I spoke to my sis-in-law and we decided that a modular style 3ft x 20 inches layout would allow him to have his locos out and set them in a little scene. I decided on a fictional diesel depot set in the 90s to present day.

I know this type of project annoys some on RM web, and I make no apology for sharing this project. If you dont like depots - find another thread to look at. It features a single road maintenance shed, fuelling road and two stabling roads. The "rails from no where" is a bridge. Yep this layout has all the cliches!

I wanted the Bachmann 00 gauge shed, but they seem to be sold out, so I got out the cardboard & styrene sheets and did my own. I've added the excellent Hornby office block to the structure add some interest, and to make it 3D. The fab Knightwing portacabins & fuel point is utilized, and there are Peco inspection pits. The layout is about 80% complete, and I will update as I go along.

Here are some pictures.

Work then began on the "plank". A simple backdrop allows it to be displayed outside with real fields in the background which looks quite nice in the sunshine.

I've tried to blend ready built structures with my own scratchbuilt stuff. Here I've set two fuel tanks I had on a brick plinth and attached it to the Knightwing fuelling point.

The rock face made up with plaster sheets and then applied wet plaster and stippled it before drying. It was then painted - dry brush style, with red, brown, sand, green, grey & finally black to bring out the ridges

The main shed, being painted by the dry brush method. The second shot show the card I was using to work out most of the paint before gently applying the layers.

The presentation today - he was chuffed to say the least. Still have the car park, and static grass to do, plus some electrics.

Good work, am not sure why people dont like diesel depots, folk like engines, a deopt is a natural resting place and not many of us have enough room for realistic size scale models of stations let alone freight yards.

Not that I am wishing to start debate....!

Thanks guys. I've watched that debate with interest too. I guess the purists will say - why would a tiny layout have a diesel depot? However, this IS a diesel depot, and some small stations had substantial depots, like Buxton. Each to their own. Scott only has limited space for this - so he's happy - job done. I enjoyed making the kits too, lots of attention to detail which I enjoy. AND a bit toungue in cheek too (see below)...

That looks nice.....I don't think it's diesel depots per se that annoy people,if anything it's identical layouts using the same old bits ( Bachmann 2 road servicing shed) stuffed full normally of DBS locos.

It just needs a bit more thought....I think.....like yours and a bit of scratch building.

After all if anyone can actually find me a prototype Bachmann shed out there in the real world stuffed full of DbS locos I'll eat my words..

Yeah, I'm starting to regret spending £30 on mine now - I can't see it fitting on my layout...

Hmmm,

Old oak commons one was used up to about 2000 ish for fuelling , seen a video with an EWS 66 and load haul 60in there, so you could create a minor wormhole in time...

I don't think you'd have trouble recouping your money if you decide it's no longer wanted, they are pretty rare at present
