Message from  Andy H.

RHTT trains booked in to Priory sidings every weekday 09.39-10.53.

These run as required and may produce locos or MPVs. All leaf busters down here now crewed by GBRf and there are 3 loco hauled diagrams running at mo.

Not sure yet what the 20s are doing down here but look like they will be based at Tonbridge for at least the next few days (may go for a look on Saturday).

Will be sending some pics of SITT wagons shortly.

Cheers

Andy H

Couple of pics of the first SITT wagons/ploughs arriving at Tonbridge.

The wagons were used regularly, mainly as de-icers, in pairs sandwiched between two locos.

NB these wagons arrived both the same way round and were split so one could be turned round.

Don't think the ploughs have been used in anger yet......AndyH.

Hi David

Any plans to purchase the Model Rail/Bachmann USA tank for Dover docks work?

Just realised that I had that pre-ordered and the Kernow O2. Very easy to pre-order, less so to pay when they arrive.

Still waiting for my BR 2Hal (A suffix is in stock, but not just R3290)

Great thread as ever, thanks

Mal

I cannot find any reference to one being there Mal, unless it was "transported Through"

All B/W's......., permission of  Lock and Key website

Lock and Key Website Quote.

After the First World War the Admiralty withdrew from the Eastern Docks but other businesses started to move in.
The line was used to move scrap metal and coal wagons to the Southern Railway’s coal hopper. The latter loads caused great complaint from Sea Front  residents and hoteliers about the dirt and dust. And in 1932 a limit of 50,000 tons per year was put on the line.

At the outbreak of the Second World War the Admiralty resumed its use of the line to supply motor torpedo boats and motor gun boats based in the Camber. After the war the Admiralty again departed and the line returned to civilian trade use. The need for coal to be transported along the Sea Front diminished as vessels converted to oil and coal exports from the Eastern Arm dwindled. Oil was still transported in tankers to the Shell-Mex and Esso oil depots.

It was the car that spelt the end of the Promenade Railway. Often cars would be parked across the tracks, holding up the train until the driver's return, and the development of the Roll-On Roll-Off berths at the Eastern Docks was replacing the old industries which had used the line. The steam locomotives were eventually replaced by diesel shunters but the last train ran in the mid 1960s.
