I use 1.5mm diameter x 1.0mm depth for magnetic head and tail lamps. 2mm diameter would be too wide for Springside lamps unfortunately. RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted January 13 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 13 (edited) My larger magnets arrived yesterday and are a perfect fit between the sleepers….just need to see how many I need to successfully uncouple the trains. RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted January 20 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 20 Well the first magnet is now glued in…..and nearly pulled the bl**dy coupler off! 😂. Looks like I need to sink them deeper or temper their strength. Initially I’m going to put some plasticard over it as it will also make spotting it easier. 2 2
RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted January 22 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 22 (edited) After a frustrating couple of hours I’ve ended up removing the magnet and the adjacent one I fitted last night. They seem to be just too powerful and are pulling the couplers down rather than deflecting and opening up the knuckle jaws. I’m going to find my Rix manual uncoupling sticks and see if they work . Plan C is to get some Dapol uncoupling magnets which are much bigger and less powerful. Edited January 22 by acg5324
RMweb Premium Steven B Posted January 23 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 23 Try locating the magnets outside the running rails rather than between them. RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted January 23 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 23 The lighting tower got completed today, bar painting. The tolerance is very tight when being assembled. I couldn’t get the legs into the holes in the base so they got cut off flat. I also had to tweak the platform railings to fit the floodlights as the gap wasn’t big enough. I’m going to mount this on a brass rod so that it can be removed for track cleaning, transportation etc. It’s not in its final place.
RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted January 23 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 23 I’ve also made a start on the platform canopy with six supports for the butterfly roof constructed. This is going to be heavily compressed in size so that I can gain access to the Motorail platform tracks. All this while a bit of soothing music played in the background!

RMweb Premium Steven B Posted January 24 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 24 Put two magnets together - make a note of how they snap together. This will show where the poles are and which way to orientate the magents. You need a North pole outside one rail and a south pole outside the other. If they come together on the long edge, then they need to run parallel to the rails. If the short edges join then you need to put them perpendicular to the rails (like an extension to the sleepers). If the short edges are where the pole are then you might be able to mount them in a hole drilled into the baseboard. I'd grab a spare length of track and experiment off the layout. There will be some adjustment of distance and alignment to work out before fitting any more to the layout. I've seen examples where multiple magnets are used (spaced between consecutive sleepers) to increase the chances of a successful uncoupling. Have you seen NBrass Locos sell an etched lighting tower? - might be a bit stronger and finer in appearance than the one you currently have. No I haven’t spotted that they did one. The tower now nearly in its final location has had a trip to the paint shop. Red Oxide primer followed by a dusting of light grey primer and Matt aluminium. Lamps to be picked out yet.
RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted January 24 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 24 A bit of progress with the canopy framework, edges and drainage gully added. The roof is partially glazed is real life and this will be replicated.
RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted January 27 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 27 A productive day at the Yorkshire NGS meeting. The Motorail platform canopy has come along in leaps and bounds. It’s had a quick spray of undercoat before the start of adding the glazing.
RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted January 27 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 27 The plasticard block for the VDA van roof has been sanded down to fit the roof profile too. Rainstrip to add prior to painting.
RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted January 29 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 29 Magnetgate episode 3…Stephen’s suggestion to orientate the magnets either side of the rails and parallel too them has worked well. I’ve pushed the stock along and it has worked every time. I’ll put some ballast around them and blend them in to the rest later.
RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted January 29 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 29 The VDA van has had a squirt of primer followed by some filler to fill a few defects in the roof. The underframe has been sprayed Matt black too.
RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted January 29 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 29 ….and finally on this very wet and dreary day….I carried on with the platform canopy until I ran out of Evergreen strip. Hopefully some supplies at work. The first couple of the supports have also been built and some brass rod attached to fit them into the platform. 11

RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted February 8 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 8 (edited) After gluing in a couple of sets of uncoupling magnets in the Motorail terminal on testing I discovered I’d miss placed them by about 5cm! They are now in the right place waiting for the glue to set. Testing the magnets also showed up another missing DCC buss feed….two in fact……now rectified.
