Simon's Workbench

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Over the summer I have managed to make a start on some items which I have been stored away awaiting for a suitable time to work on them.

First is a Hornby class 60, this was purchased 6 years ago I think! It started as 60077 Canisp. Below shows progress so far, the Mainline logos and numbers have been removed using T-Cut. I have just noticed the warning flashes still need removing. Also the air horns have been removed to allow removal of the GPS? bracket? It will be finished as 60010 Pumlumon Plynlimon when based at Cardiff Canton in the FPEK pool.

Second is a Vitrains Class 37, this started as 37709 in Mainline colours. Along with a complete respray, I have fitted Shawplan etched windscreens, the correct nose grills for 37714 and also the Shawplan roof fan grill. Also Hornby class 31 buffers have been fitted aswell. Again this is to be finished as when based at Cardiff Canton in the FMCH pool. Again still plenty to do, glazing, pipes etc.

Next, this started out again as a Mainline liveried loco, 09019 from Modelzone. Full respray into BR blue and I have started weathering although alot left to do. This is to be finished as 08760 based at Eastleigh, the high level air pipes need refitting.

I have also been working on some wagons aswell. Below is a Bachmann HEA which is to be changed to a RNA barrier, started the weathering. A Parkside Dundas VEA, again weathered, I have 8 more of these to do. Last a Bachmann OBA finished in weathered Freight Maroon with a tarpaulin created from tissue which then had several coats of modellers dope applied.

Hi,

Now that I have got to the stage of painting my crane, I thought I should look at finishing the 2 BTU vehicles which I started a very long time ago. Need to order some transfers from Southern Pride for numbering etc.

The staff coach needs an interior adding and glazing. I think the Wigan Springs Branch BTzU ran with 3 vans so will probably need to convert another in the future.

What make are the BTU vehicles or did you convert them from RTR?

Hi,

The BTU vehicles started out as 2 Bachmann MK1 BSK's. The staff vehicle was converted using Hurst etched sides. The tool van was converted by using thin brass sheet glued to the bodyside with the access doors cut out. The crane at the rear in the picture is scratchbuilt.

Hi,

Just recently picked up a model of 08673 by Hornby. The plan is to respray Executive light grey over the incorrect white and also spray the red stripe in Rail red. Could do with obtaining some nameplates aswell. I have also noted that the depot shed plates show 8A on the model, it should be 9A.

Here it is alongside Modelzone/Bachmann 08721.

Going to use the Hornby pipes and screw couplings on 08721.

Hi,

Finally made a start on 08673. The white which was wrong has been oversprayed with Executive light grey. The nameplates have been masked off until suitable replacements are found. The extra lamp brackets on the cab have also been removed.

Very nice Simon, which do you prefer the Hornby or Bachmann 08?

I think out of the two, the chassis on the Hornby 08 looks better, certainly the coupling rods and detail thats been added. The bodies on both are very good, I am still not sure about the opening cab doors though on the Hornby versions. I have got 3 Bachmann 08's and 3 Hornby, I may look at fitting some finer coupling rods to the Bachmann 08's in the future.

Decided to get some of my projects complete where possible as I have far too many just basically waiting for time to do them.

First is 60010, this started out as 60077 with Mainline branding. It was just waiting some overhead warning flashes fitting and the numbers on the cab front, followed by a coat of satin varnish and fitting the etched arrows and nameplates. The silencer has also been painted silver as per condition in 1991.

Next is 08760, this has had more weathering undertaken and also all the pipes have been added. There are a couple of bits still to do and then it should be complete.

That is just how I remember blue 08s, weathered and battered! Great weathering Simon.

I think you know my feelings on your 60!

Thanks for your views on the 08s. I have one of each and find that the Hornby one runs much better than the Bachmann version. Have you found anything similar?

Thanks Alex, yes agree 08's do look better in worn blue.

Regards the operation of the 08's, I only have used a Bachmann 08 on a layout for shunting, not long after they had been released. I seem to remember the pick ups got dirty quite quickly which effected operation. I may look at fitting extra pick ups at somepoint to the Bachmann models aswell as replacement coupling rods. I need to build a suitable layout to allow them to be run!

Another loco which is finally nearing completion is 37714. Its a Vitrains model which has had the correct style nose grills fitted, Shawplan roof grill, Hornby buffers and full respray. As mentioned further above its finished in condition when based at Cardiff Canton. Lazerglaze has now been fitted following the body being sprayed with satin varnish. Just a few details to add and then it should be ready for some weathering.

Another loco which had been partly started, was this Bachmann blue class 20. I had removed the old number and stopped at that. Having seen the Bachmann Collectors club class 20, I decided to model 20172 in the condition it could been seen working out of Wigan Springs Branch on the Northwest coal diagrams. Still undecided to model 20028, same livery - small numbers, to go with it or 20075 in standard blue. When at Springs Branch it had lost its name and the Thornaby Kingfisher.

The buffers have been changed for the excellent Lanarkshire models version.

Oooh has to be one of my favourite Thornaby specials.

Looks stunning

Thanks, It was a pleasent surprise when this and 028 turned up on the Wigan coal circuit back in 1989, made a change from BR blue and Railfreight.

Just got to order the large bodyside numbers for this, try and get that done this week.

Another project that has been on the backburner is a Mk1 BTU Tool van which was allocated at Eastfield. This is a Replica Railways Mk1 BG with the moulded handrails replaced with wire. Also Comet Models extended whitemetal buffers have also been fitted. The body has been sprayed Rail yellow and transfers are a mixture of Fox and Railtec.

37714 is now basically complete apart from a set of screw couplings, cannot decide between Hornby or Romford.Light weathering has been applied around the grill areas, exhaust area and underframe. The speedo drive and conduit has been added to the bogie frame along with the windscreen wipers onto the cab windscreens.

Will hopefully give it a run at the Wigan show.

  • 1 year later...

Now things have calmed down hopefully, I am hoping to get stuck into some resprays over the coming months for Dallam N gauge and Strathmuir 4mm. Below is my bench at the moment - lots to do. The n gauge class 90 will become 90128 in SNCB blue, the Dapol 156 is to be sprayed into Regional Railways Northwest livery (green stripe).

The 4mm stuff consists of 2 37's in large logo blue, redstripe 47, pair of blue 20's to name a few.

post-6834-0-16693400-1490474950_thumb.jpg

The Dapol 156 stripped down, the glazing came out alot easier than I was expecting.

Just need to rub down ready for primer.

Cheers
