Heavy emphasis on Narrow Gauge.  Bad move.  I hate it when exhibition organisers insist on a 'theme'.  A sure way to alienate a good number of your regular attendees.

Terry

Hi Terry,

The Uckfield exhibition has always had a very strong narrow gauge presence amongst its eclectic mix of layouts, which seem to be appreciated by our many returning visitors.

Indeed many of them feature highly in the exit poll in which the visitors vote for their "best in show" and in some years have received the most votes.

Previous narrow gauge layouts at the exhibition have included Crumley & Little Wickhill, The Loop, Corris 1930, Groenen Creek, Purbeck and Pempoul - Reseau Breton as well as minimum gauge layouts from Christopher Payne.

The exhibition is not "themed", however there is a desire to have layouts of excellent quality with a high number of different scale/gauge combinations represented.

This year is no different with 12 different combinations representing prototypes in 5 different countries.

Just a quick message to say that C&L Finescale has been added to our list of trade as we found we had a 6ft space and they are able to bring their Mini Stand along.

So anyone who wishes to order from their website and collect from the show the opportunity is there however orders must be in by midday on Monday 14th.

Glad to see that the Uckfield exhibition went well again this year.

It was always a favourite of mine - but unfortunately the German school holidays haven't tied up with the weekend for the past few years!

Sadly I didn't feel this year was as good as last year. Like many enthusiasts I bring my children along but there really wasn't much there for them, indeed in the main hall there was only one of the boxes for them to stand on to watch a layout. I know these shows are meant to appeal to a broad range of enthusiasts but only the (excellent) GWR layout was of any interest to them and the vast majority they couldn't even see. Last year was much better with a greater mix of layouts. This year there was simply too many small layouts.

[1]   I do not comment on the subjective issue of the selection of layouts, but regarding display height feel the above comment is both unfair and inappropriate.

[2]   The CMRA periscopes were available for loan so that children could observe layouts that were displayed at a height suitable for the majority of exhibition visitors (= standing adults).

[3]    I would make clear that (i) I was an exhibitor myself with my "Pynton Tramway Co" layout, (ii) I feel no need to make any apology that it was displayed with a track height of approx 56ins (1.43m) off the floor, and (iii) I had some part to play in the adoption of the periscopes for this purpose by the CMRA.

Seems a bit strong - hate is a very emotive word. Surely good modelling is good modelling, irrespective of the scale/gauge/subject.

I'm not too sure why you would register to a forum just to register a complaint about one of the smaller exhibitions

Hmmmmm....seems a bit weird to me. It would be interesting to know if any comments were made to the stewards etc., at the show.

No, I thought not.
