Nice lights there jack! Really got to get myself a RHTT set I think and do some lights on it! They look really good! Bachmann's MPV modules would be a good one as well for the lights!

Thanks Ali. Little projects like this can bring a model to life, and they're relatively easy and inexpensive, so why not!?

The MPV I'd have to think about as there's not one, but 6 modules, and I'd have to control them from a discreet switch somewhere or by DCC.

Thanks,

Jack.

Evening,

Nothing done this weekend as I've been at BELMRS's expo all weekend, I had a thoroughly enjoyable time operating New Bryford with the crew, and would happily have another go any time.

Here's a link to the gallery with all the photos in, some of my projects had a run, including the Northern 142 and my DRS 20 in the mega consist of the nuclear train. Link here:

Thanks,

Jack.

Nice lights there jack! Really got to get myself a RHTT set I think and do some lights on it! They look really good! Bachmann's MPV modules would be a good one as well for the lights!

Thanks Ali, I may add lights to the Bachmann model when I get round to it, but as this module is built from a kit it is easier to add them now than retro fit them, so it'll be a while until I decide to add them to the MPV.

Small update. Hopefully for the last time I've fixed 37259, by strengthening the troublesome snow ploughs and fixing the noses that broke off after falling from the layout. I've also dabbed some black paint over a couple of spots of 'light bleed' on the noses, and this has almost sorted it, so after a coat of yellow it'll be reet...

post-21664-0-32614500-1442854991_thumb.jpeg

I've also spotted some red and white paint on the fuel tank gauge and engine stop pull, just visible in this photo:

post-21664-0-18935500-1442855000_thumb.jpeg

And as per the prototype, 47501 seems to have had a marker light failure!

post-21664-0-49227400-1442855016_thumb.jpeg

Finally whilst I had the matt black out I've painted the top of the module's lights to eliminate light bleed:

In other news, I've got a coach for sale! The model is of 975280 that ran with the old SGT, the one with the funny black wagon in the middle. I bought it but have lost interest in modelling the train as it doesn't run now. The coach is Model Rail Ltd. Ed. 39-225Z produced for Kernow MRC. It is in excellent condition and has only been run twice, and I've kept the original paperwork, detail pack and tissue paper sleeve. £45 posted. Please PM me if you've any questions or you want more pictures

Evening...

A small amount of modelling has happened recently. First I've dulled down the lights of the 142 as they were far too bright. I've also added passengers, although they are considerably smaller than the guard...oops!

post-21664-0-29243900-1444498259_thumb.jpeg

After purchasing a pair of container flats at Wigan show I've debranded one of them as I'd never heard of the company and I couldn't find many photos on the tinterweb, so it's now got black patches on both sides, although I originally did BR blue on one side! :O

post-21664-0-31761300-1444498303_thumb.jpeg

Also some progress has been made on one of the escort coaches, with the door plated over. Plasticard has been glued over the hole with some thin strips added to the edge on an angle. The other will follow suit soon, when I have time!

post-21664-0-36838600-1444498278_thumb.jpeg

And lastly, a project has been completed. 60042 has been looking at me for ages so I decided to finish it off. To begin, I hadn't varnished it so I brush painted RM Matt all over it, always stroking down the body:

post-21664-0-98836800-1444498267_thumb.jpeg

Then I decided to glue open two doors on opposite sides...one is just open a crack but the other I had to pull out the hinge pin and glue the door in, but so the joint was flush...

post-21664-0-27804400-1444498287_thumb.jpeg

And lastly I put various layers of yellow Tamiya masking tape over the lights as they are piercingly bright out of the box:

post-21664-0-96209100-1444498313_thumb.jpeg

And a finished piccie! :D

Ive been adding drivers to my class 60s :senile: :locomotive:

Cheers Neil, it's such a shame really that they don't provide drivers, especially with the exquisite interiors of Hornby 'top link' locos, they could even provide them in the detail bag. This however gives us chance to do a bit of modelling! :butcher:

Thanks,

Jack.

The 142 look s very nice, I've been working on one too of late, a Northern Spirit set.  I happened to have some scrap class 153 shells and chassis, so the moulded couplings and radio pods were salvaged and fitted to the 142 - the couplings are a huge improvement over the moulded blob, and while I was at it I opened out the rectangular hole underneath it  Unfortunately, I don't think Hornby sell them as spares, I'm sure they'd sell well if they did!  The radio pods on the roof are a bit on the large side, but make a decent representation of something I wouldn't have done otherwise.  I fitted 'gangways' between the cars too, in the form of a piece of curved plasticard.  I just cut a rectangle the right height and wider than the moulded doorway aperture, scored the inside to help it curve evenly, gently bent it to shape and just 'popped' it in to place.  With a bit of trimming of the width, I got it so that when the couplings are pushed tight together, the two just touch, and because they're curved, they don't snag each other as the cars move in relation to each other through curves.  Its not perfect, but it looks better than the gap that was there before.  Just remember, make sure to leave yourself access to the body mounting screw if you glue them in place!  I don't have it to hand at the minute but if anyone would like a pic I can pop a few here?

I have a couple more 142s to do, but only enough 153 parts for one of them... SO I'll procrastinate a little...

Oh, I forgot to add, great idea on using masking tape over the lights,  I'd never thought of that but will give it a go, as you say they are too bright and too blue-white.

Thanks JDW, I'll be adding gangways eventually, probably just a scrap of foam between the cars. You can buy spare 153 detail packs off eBay for about £3.00; not too bad as you get a pair of couplings and the elusive 153/156 shaped snowploughs.

Ah, I'll have a look, only seen the ploughs on eBay though (they need an awful lot of filing around the edges to make them thin enough - easy but tedious, I've done at least a dozen pairs so far... )

Evening one and all, not much tonight but something nonetheless....

A rant. Kadee wheels get very dirty. I've known this since I put them on my 'Osprey', because no wheel I've ever seen before (bar plastic) is black. Sure enough, when I put the wagon on my workbench the other day it was because of bad running, and on inspection tonight I found this...a build up of grime about half the depth of the flange on the inside edge...not too friendly with track. :nono:

post-21664-0-80542900-1445636856_thumb.jpeg

The muck is from 5 wheels. Not 5 axles, singular wheels. So my method to clean them is to first brush with a brass propelling brush, then brush with a fibre glass brush which leaves a nice shiny METAL finish, as seen in the before/after shot above or below...

post-21664-0-84370300-1445636865_thumb.jpeg

I think I'll put this down to a coating on the wheel which makes it appear black, but which attracts dirt. It may however just be a build up of dirt, as they have been run a good few miles since I put them in. Either way, I'll know to give all my Kadee wheels thorough clean in future before they go near track.

Thanks,

Jack.

Evenings...

Firstly thanks for the continued page views and likes, very much appreciated! :)

Further to the previous post, I've been cleaning wheels again, this time a 'salmon' track panel flat and my FEAS pair. Same as last time (steel brush then fibre glass), it's amazing how much muck is accumulated:

post-21664-0-34186700-1446233852_thumb.jpeg

On the subject of the salmon, I've added some more lead to both this and my osprey, although the latter also needed straightening with brass square section as I've found Evo-Stick tends to badly warp plastic...

post-21664-0-24311800-1446233844_thumb.jpeg

Also this evening I've painted the black backgrounds for the numerous data markings on the salmon solebars:

post-21664-0-23643700-1446233860_thumb.jpeg

Whilst I'm in a wagon mood, I decided to finish the FJA wagon by making the last side up in the same way as the last; much plastic butchery!

The FJA has received some cosmetic container locking points too. These were created by first glueing two pieces of plastic square section together, then cutting off one corner as shown in the pic:

post-21664-0-87456700-1446233827_thumb.jpeg

And a picture of the whole wagon now with the sides finished and new locking points in situ, paint next!...

post-21664-0-02770500-1446233876_thumb.jpeg

I'm also to receive a new toy for me birthday, more soon when I actually get it but it should scrub up very nicely! :senile:

Happy modelling!

Jack.

A bit more done today on a completely different project, an EWS HTA which has had a flashing tail lamp fitted and buffers.

To begin I took a flashing light curcuit I bought at an exhibition (cannot for the life of me remember the seller), and de soldered the battery holder and LED connection screw terminals to leave just the flash unit on the PCB. I then soldered a tiny 0603 SMD to some copperclad, and soldered this to some wires and then the curcuit. I also soldered some wires to connect the battery holder, with a switch facing down:

post-21664-0-03143900-1446321943_thumb.jpeg

Then I needed to file a notch out of the metal weight to let the wires through, and drill a hole through the floor for the switch:

post-21664-0-04265300-1446321931_thumb.jpeg

And finally I've added a set of buffers from part of an MCA/DA/OA ballast wagon kit that I picked up from Wigan Expo for the ghastly price of £1. I've also blanked off the gap for the Kadee coupling with a piece of plasticard and added a Brassmasters coupling hook and backplate...

post-21664-0-07306800-1446321950_thumb.jpeg

The next step is painting then this wagon is ready to go into a trip working to Stoke Marcroft, because I haven't got any more hoppers as I can't afford a rake at £45 EACH!! I went in a model shop last week that had a Heljan duff (47) for £35! Madness! :O

I've also been modelling a face today too

post-21664-0-15073500-1446321924_thumb.jpeg

I'm a big kid. :D

Keep on modelling!

Jack.

Some more wagons have had a trip to JT's yard, and the HTA has progressed a bit more.

So first, I've given the coal wagon a first (very translucent) coat of yellow to the bufferbeam (RM warning yellow). Once this has been built up I'll add the maroon to the buffer shanks, than blacks...

post-21664-0-83673300-1446412265_thumb.jpeg

And just for fun a close up of the buffers of a 60 and the wagon:

post-21664-0-32308600-1446412284_thumb.jpeg

And then some pics with the 60:

post-21664-0-76126700-1446412292_thumb.jpeg

Finally, I've added chunks of lead to a rake of EWS ballast wagons, some MTA, PNA and scratchbuilt/butchered Hornby wagons that I've coded MFA under TOPS. I've then glued all the bodies on prior to painting in some cases, and weathering. It will provide some much needed rest and distraction from next week's GCSE mocks...

post-21664-0-13155200-1446412259_thumb.jpeg

So, that'll be it for the near future I would think, but I'll be back on track in a week or two's time! :)

Keep on modding!

Jack.

Some more excellent work there mate but whoaaaa, hold on a second, lets rewind to post #216, you were in a model shop that had a Heljan "Duff" for £35...?  I think we need to be told where said establishment can be found!  :-D  :jester:

Haha yes that shop does have some excellent bargains...a pendolino coach for £14...brand new Bachy 66 for £50?

Trouble is it's in Grimsby, and I only get to go about once a month.
