It's all about perspective...having never seen one and with none running on the network today, I'd class that as retro, but they were still about in the 00s (hence my justification for a temporary one), so you're not as old as those who remember them things that boil water to move... :D

Thanks,

Jack.

Careful..... you may lose operating privileges.........

Mick

I completely agree with you, it is retro, & unlike some ( hi Mick!! :mosking:  ) I'm  nowhere near old enough to remember kettles in service, I do remember going to Donny every week with my Dad, to see the brand new 56's & 58's in the works !

If that makes me retro too, then I'm fine with that !

Cheers,

Phil.

Well, high time for some modelling? :scratchhead:

Today I've done a little bit of painting, namely the white details on the Freightliner ballast containers, which are now finished bar weathering. I've also painted the silver buffer shanks on a recently acquired Bachmann MEA, which has also had brass coupling hooks added along with silver painted brake discs and then a black bufferbeam. Last bit of painting was the brake levers on the MEA, and also the beginnings of some graffiti...my first try at such 'art'...

post-21664-0-95552900-1474578352_thumb.jpg

Finally here's a couple of pics of some trains I've been running on my basic roundy roundy, which may get relocated to a much much bigger...umm...building relatively soon, in which case I might look at building an actual layout instead of just having somewhere to run stuff round :senile:

Keep on modelling!

Evening...some more wagons!

So with little time for modelling recently yadda yadda yadda, I've decided to finish or take on some short term wagon projects. The MEA has had the graffiti finished, this being a representation of the real thing, which was obviously painted from photos. I've also started repainting an HSA into EWS colours, and I'm nearly done after brush painting two coats of maroon and the top yellow band, and painting the underframe black. This will receive transfers and weathering in due course...

post-21664-0-74984300-1475012549_thumb.jpg

Also this evening I added the tail lamp to my HHA wagon, by soldering a switch (that protrudes through a hole underneath) to a battery, and this to two enamelled wires connected to a tiny 0805 SMD flashing LED glued in a tail lamp housing. The lamp is yet to be painted black then white, as there is enormous light bleed currently...

And that's it. I'll probably start weathering some of these and other wagons shortly, as there's a fair few stacked up now waiting to be weathered, including some lengthy rakes

Happy modelling,

Jack.

Jack just been reading through this thread some very interesting items here and impressive modelling. Have you thought about some form of edge protection on the round round layout especially where the train comes around the bend, wouldn't want to see those lovely models end up on the floor

Some brilliant work as always mate. Love the taillamp where did you get that from?

Also been working on repainting hsa's into ews maroon with the gold band and i am too at the same stage as you with most of them, amongst them i also have been doing the same to some cea's. I have got a lo rake of them so take a look there are a few updates on pages 8 & 9.

Cheers both! :)

Regards the roundy roundy...this will shortly be relocated to a much larger 'room' (actually a shed but an insulated and heated one etc. etc.), and I'll be starting again from scratch, with more permanence this time, and might do some scenics to keep my mojo topped up.

I'll head over shortly WCML100...today I've added transfers so this wagon will shortly be varnished for protection. The tail lamp moulding on the HHA is from the Dapol HIA that I bought, and I blanked off the hole for it on this model and added a lamp iron as this would be in train and not at the back. The LED is an 0805 flashing SMD from Direct Train Spares of Burnley...they regularly attend shows up here and have a website, although any LEDs off eBay will do just as well. The enamelled wire is from said auction site, as is the switch and battery holder, all bought in (relative) bulk to save hassle and money.

Thanks,

Jack.

Well, an excellent day was had at Wigan; there were some excellent layouts on display with great trade support, and I met a few familiar faces too. I bought a couple of parts to hopefully get a few projects signed off, and couldn't resist a pair of ICA clay slurry tanks in weathered condition, to go with my pristine silver one, and hopefully one day I'll be able to make a train of them!

Unfortunately I've added the transfers and sprayed one side of the HEA in varnish, although the paint bubbled up instantly and thus I had to scrape it all off so I'll have to start that side again. C'est la vie!

Ta for now,

Jack.

i have always fancied some of the weathered variants of the ICA's from Dapol, a nice really nice model.

Shame about the HEA! I have been working on some more of mine too!

Cheers WCML100... it was my hasty painting that caused the problem...the wrong varnish and far from perfect conditions. I'll redo it soon.

I've already eyed up some Improvements to be made to the tanks...namely some new ladders and more weathering!

Thanks,

Jack.

Evening all...a productive modelling session was had tonight!

So firstly I set about making some window blanks for my network rail RTOV (DBSO), out of some thin brass sheet because the windows on the Lima donor coach are stepped so the blank can simply be glued onto the step. The rough rectangle was cut with scissors, then refined and filed and the corners were rounded off before glueing in with superglue...

post-21664-0-12268800-1475613655_thumb.jpg

I've also added lights to 977868, by glueing two strips of LEDs connected by wires onto the roof, and then soldered to some sliced up IC sockets, with heat shrink over the connector for stability. This will be connected to the DBSO, which has pickups so can provide power...

Finally a couple of pics of the 'good' side of the HEA, with transfers, and the bad side that's had to be repainted, with the first coat still fresh...

Lima?

Don't forget to remove the door strap moulding on the hinge side. First thing I do when stripping down a Airfix/Mainline/Dapol/Hornby Mk2

Keep up the good work Jack.

Mick

Well, very productive day today and this seems to be a recurring trend seeing as though time has become increasingly scarce...

So firstly, following on from my DBSO work the other day, I carved a pair of parallel lines from the roof down to the bottom of the bodywork either side of the driver's door window, and cut a small section out of the bottom which was filled in with a piece of angled plasticard. Door handles were then added from 0.45mm wire, and then it was all given a coat of primer. Only after I'd done this did I remember I needed to add some handrails either side of the new door...oh well! Now it has a coat of parimer on it, the tin foil surround around the grille is a little lacking in a few areas, so this might be replaced by my new favoured material (brass). Of particular note, the new filled in windows have come out a treat due to them being brass, and IMO were certainly worth the work. I also sprayed the buffer beam details whilst I was at it...

post-21664-0-25127200-1476037442_thumb.jpg

Following this, new transfers were applied to the HEA, and then this was sealed again with some enamel varnish this time, which worked a lot better...

post-21664-0-90741900-1476037461_thumb.jpg

And finally, whilst I was in a spraying mood I gave 66407 a coat of varnish as this has been absent from the fleet for a while after weathering.

I also did a little work on 'Tighte End Yard', but didn't finish, so this will feature on here and in its own thread when I've finished.

Keep on modelling!

Evening...

I've been slowly progressing with Tighte End Yard, adding lights and looking at rigging up some overhead lights for the scenic area, but I've done some workbench stuff too.

Firstly I've finished adding beading to the top edge of the MXA and given it a coat of primer ready for a red dip...I'm thinking a couple of hand brushed coats and then a final sprayed coat to build up density. Likewise, I've finished stripping a 66 body shell to be resprayed, and this has been primed although there's a couple of areas that need more sanding before painting. This will be red too, along with a 60 which I need to find some roof grilles for...any suggestions? :scratchhead:

I've also just bought some kits that should keep me entertained for just about as long as I've been waiting for them...more to follow when they arrive!

Keep modelling! ;)

Cheers Neil

I haven't died...but college has brought me close! When I get a bit of time to myself (is there such a thing?) I'll have a look where I'm at...I've done a few little bits here and there but nothing major, but I'll take a few snaps and post them on here.

Thanks,

Jack.

Evening all,

So a return from hibernation has seen some modelling...had a bit of a hard time balancing stuff recently but I've collated a few bits to do a post.

First is some progress on the OTA timber wagons. Now I think I'm going slightly mad (deliberate song reference) because I decided to make all the stanchions by hand, which seemed a good idea at the time...

post-21664-0-44839200-1481669667_thumb.jpg

And there's still one wagon left

Here's what they look like fitted...the bent ones have since been straightened with gentle heat:

post-21664-0-02312300-1481669688_thumb.jpg

Next I've finished the second MCA wagon, which has been fitted with new Genesis Kits bogies. These look so much better and personally I think are worth the effort. A new centre section had to be fabricated from plastic instead of metal due to short circuiting because of the metal axle:

post-21664-0-06697300-1481669702_thumb.jpg

Finished and painted:

post-21664-0-13427800-1481669714_thumb.jpg

I decided I didn't like the lights in my Hornby 142... the main running lights had awful light bleed and the interior lights are DC strip lighting...not designed to run straight off AC! I made a bridge rectifier out of diodes and a capacitor for each car and glued it in with hot glue, making a plasticard enclosure to hide the contraption in the loo space:

post-21664-0-55344000-1481670346_thumb.jpg

post-21664-0-83305400-1481669745_thumb.jpg

I fixed the light bleed with masking tape over the LEDs and some crafty permanent marker application, and it's now at an acceptable level...

post-21664-0-95090600-1481669762_thumb.jpg

post-21664-0-02871600-1481669786_thumb.jpg

And finally, the first red coat has been hand brushed on the MXA, which now awaits yet more (airbrushed) red once I've sorted some missing grilles for the class 60 body. When I have, the MXA, 60 and a 66 will be sprayed red

post-21664-0-24799400-1481669796_thumb.jpg

Thanks for looking in...happy modelling! :senile:

To those who have followed, commented, liked or viewed this thread during 2016, I'd like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and best wishes for the new year.

Posed on my layout 'Tight End Yard' are 37409 'Lord Hinton', 66407 and the two MK2a escort coaches. This week I've added the extra marker lights to the 66 and finished this off post-weathering.

Happy Christmas! ;)

So today I've done a few bits. Santa brought me another white HIA and another 'silver bullet' (which was silver this time, not brown). He also got me the guarantee of a new loco in the new year...no prizes for guessing which! I've got to decide whether I want just the one, or two, or one with sound, so I think I'll wait until they're released to see how it sounds and what the loco is like. Back to some modelling!

So I set about detailing my HIA as per the previous model, with new buffers and picked out details. The new buffers were made from small pieces of tube and a small piece of sheet for the head as per before, but this time I decided to use a piece of square strip to make it more secure. A larger hole had to be drilled into the cast chassis therefore, as seen here:

post-21664-0-50899600-1482956439_thumb.jpg

Following this, the new buffers were glued in place. The lamp irons were replaced or added with a small piece of wire that had been flattened as previously, and then all the parts were painted in the various colours, once again, as detailed before.

post-21664-0-93172700-1482956447_thumb.jpg

It's worth noting that Dapol have learnt from their previous batch and painted the interiors of their new batch, which would save people who had to do this themselves a lot of effort...not thinking of anyone in particular *kof* Mick *kof* :D

post-21664-0-72892600-1482956454_thumb.jpg

Also today I soldered up some new buffers for Tighte End Yard after the broken or missing ones were quite obvious in my previous pic. These were small bits of bullhead rail that were bent and cut (father C also brought me a pair of Xuron track cutters too :)), and soldered together then glued in place, and finally painted as per those at Crewe Gresty Bridge...

post-21664-0-57990500-1482956428_thumb.jpg

That's all for now!

Thanks,

Jack.
