Recommended Posts

Black bucket signifies small works????

Nah - the Portaloo is full up

Stewart

Havent seen a single portaloo

except at Dawlish Warren compound

& Dawlish Station compound

But it might be out of camera shot to the left

or out of sight where there is a space between the 2 terraces of houses

otherwise its a lo.................ng  walk!

Photos taken Mon 14th April

Dawlish Town beach  ramp to left under bridge by Station

I cant remember the sand being so low

I have never seen these pipes etc being uncovered,  in the 40 years I have lived in the area

groyne  looks like rail uprights used

post-22449-0-92142200-1397559402.jpg

old sewer pipe that ran parallel to shoreline

another one free of its concrete jacket

post-22449-0-09451200-1397559601.jpg

normally the beach is halfway up this top part of the slope

post-22449-0-77641800-1397559751.jpg

old sewer running down lower slipway

post-22449-0-94187500-1397559873.jpg

bit of old masonry, from station? in a long ago previous storm?

post-22449-0-70440400-1397559978.jpg

There appears to have been a very visible along shore creep

of beach material from south to north

taking away from this side of the breakwater situated

by the middle of the viaduct entrance to the beach

whereas the other side of that break water the beach is near enough to the top of the walk

last summer  by the kiosk there was a 2-3 ft drop off at the bottom of that slipway

EDIT;-

So I imagine the sand etc will have pilled up at the Red Rock breakwater near Dawlish Warren

but cant get any where near there yet

and

the beach was so busy, that it was difficult to get any pictures not obscured by bodies

At first I thought the funny web-cam post was showing a stormy night!!

Now I think it is a close up of a butterfly's wing?

Yesterday on the dawlishbeach camera, two men moved a number of metal railing panels onto the footpath - does that mean the footpath is to be fitted with a safety fence?

I don't ever remember there being a fence here, but there is some evidence nearer the red rock that there was once such a fence.

Any ideas?

Think I saw that too

I thought that it was safety fencing that had been in use as they were repairing the parapet,

being removed

which continued on after the line had opened, & the only access  was along the outside of the seawall

Doesn't Dawlish Bay look beautiful beyond the works?

Just right for a school holiday for a change and may many folk visit and see the great work that has been done/is being done.

ISTR that some of the sewage pipes used at Dawlish were the old Atmospheric pipes being reused. IIRC the section of pipe at Didcot did some service as a sewage pipe before going to the GWS.

I don't know if any still remain at Dawlish though.

all that I saw were completly round no slot in them

Actually about 20 years ago I transported one specimen

from the science museum annex to the Brunels Tower museum in Starcross

but that closed shortly after, no idea where the pipe  went

It was too windy on the beach, and I was annoyed that the footbridge and Langstone Rock are closed...

we had a picnic lunch at the Warren today

the best place was not on the beach

although we did get on the beach with the wheelchair & tandem trailer seat

as it was low tide

the best place was on the grass between the Boathouse & the seawall

as the wind was from the east & south
