Have heard this shop maybe opening up under the D&F name again dose anyone know if that's true

Thanks

Alan

Hi

I don't know if it's true. But hopefully it is. There must still be a place for a decent model railway shop in Glasgow city centre. If it does re-open I hope we can all support it. It will take a lot of work and goodwill to bring it back to the days of Irene, David, Albert and Chas though. The new owner wouldn't go wrong if they "invited" some of those old codgers back for a day or two a week. Their patter will still be murder. But worth it.

Sorry folks, unless Dave is keeping secrets from me, there is no chance that this will be happening, at least not with the original crew and I don't think that anyone else will open it with that name! Quite honestly, it must be seriously difficult to run a model shop nowadays, especially with the lack of stock available and the way prices have been going over the last few years.

Yes very fondly remembered. While I hope it's true, at least a model shop in some form, it sounds unlikely . But if anyone has any information , let us know .

See above!

Yes I know it's not D and F , just wondered if someone else was setting it up, although as said, in today's environment , I think you'd need to be quite mad or have a large fortune you want to turn into a smaller one .

Hi all,

Heard someone saying something about thhis at the weekend - no idea if true or false.

however, the premises showed as up for lease last week but no longer listed this week.

So - maybe something is happening behind the scenes?

Thanks

OK, to firmly squash this rumour, there is no chance of the shop in Bell Street re-opening as D&F with the original owners involved. I can only speculate as to why this rumour has started and I will put forward one theory. When D&F were in residence there, the frontage above the shop was properly painted with D&F Models name, when Waddell's took over, if I remember correctly, they just covered this with a "removable" board. Given they have now left and there is a requirement to return the property to an original state, then if that board was removed it would have uncovered the original D&F logo, so maybe someone has seen this and put 2 and 2 together to make about one hundred and fifty!

So, sorry, but Dave, Irene, Chas etc. are perfectly content with their retirement status, although Dave does visit the Uddingston Model Centre to do the occasional repair for John. This shop, and the small shop in Partick (with very limited railway stocks), will remain as being the only ones in the west of Scotland catchment.

We have not heard any rumours of a shop re-opening in the former Bell Street premises as a model shop.

Shame . When you look at something like Arcadia models down in Shaw, Oldham you realise just how much we are missing out on . To be honest Waddells was never really a very well stocked shop like D&F or Arcadia, but you would have thought the catctchment area of West Central Scotland would support a model shop . As well as Uddingston and Patrick , which don't have a lot of model railway stock, there's Pastimes specialising in second hand , but none are the true model shop like D&F was.

Hi

I don't think anybody expected Irene and David etc to come out of retirement and re-open the shop. I think folk are hoping the shop will re-open as a model shop. If it's called D+F all the better. But as long as it's a well stocked shop with friendly staff. I'm sure people will use it no matter what it's called. Glasgow city centre needs a decent model shop. Hopefully one of the bigger shops from across the border might seize the opportunity.

Hi Chas,

I've spoken to the person who had made the suggestion that the shop might be re-opening.

You are correct - it was the reappearance of the D&F signage that caused him to think that it was reopening.

Anyway - he is now corrected...

Thanks for providing an accurate sit rep.

Just a shame it isn't going to happen!

Thanks

Oh bo**ocks Chas just admit the truth that you and Dave are itching to get back into the business and have floated these 'rumours' to test the water.

So now that we have established that there is a market when are you guys planning to reopen?

And to everyone on this forum who has show an interest lets hear it from you to encourage and support these two stalwarts :yahoo:  :yahoo:

Davy, there's definitely something going on. I overheard a conversation when frustrations were creeping in over progress on "Larbert" (or rather underneath Larbert.) There was talk about a home delivery service to be tacked on to the vintage shop using a vintage vehicle. I heard they're buying Dave Franks old Land Rover. It still needs a bit of work that's why Dave hasn't been at the club for a couple of weeks and what's more I heard a private plate has been bought - DNF 56 (The Bell St address!). Apparently if the delivery order is over £100 they're talking about throwing in a pizza and an Irn Bru.

Ah that all makes sense now as Davy Franks was asking me if I still had swivels from my parts bin from the old Landies I had but unfortunately they were cleared out ages ago.

Pizza and Irn Bru might be a bit of a gimmick but it is to be commended none the less.

Hope its up and running before the Autumn and the Xmas offerings from the big manufacturers.

Dave.

Hi Chas, are we not forgetting Pastimes in Maryhill Road? Last time I was there in June they were busy and the shelves full of great model railway stuff.

Have they not been there since before D&F opened? Always worth a visit. I always visit Uddingston Models and Pastimes when I am down.

Tommy.
