Rugd1022
With the internet giving rise to people diggng into their archives and posting previously unseen images all over the ether which otherwise would probably have never seen the light of day, I thought I'd start a shamelessly nostalgic thread looking back on the heady days of the '60s. Back then the idea of famous people being surrounded by hired in security guards was unheard of and The Beatles were no different, as famous as they were, they still had time for fans armed with cameras and autograph books, their homes and of course Abbey Road studios were well known haunts for the likes of the 'Apple Scruffs' and other fans. A large number of candid photos have made it onto the internet in recent years so I thought it'd be nice to share some of them on here, with appropriate credits where known. Mention of various Beatles' owned Mini Coopers and other cars over in Wheeltappers is a good excuse to give these an airing... George Harrison's psychedelic Radford Cooper S parked up outside Paul McCartney's gaff in Cavendish Avenue in 1967, just round the corner from EMI at Abbey Road (pic : unknown) George at Heathrow Airport on 26/10/66 with his black Ferrari 275GTB, he'd arrived in full Indian garb to collect Ravi Shankar who arrived wearing a smart suit! (pics : Gettyimagesltd) Paul and John arrive at Abbey Road in early '67, in Pauls 1965 Radford Cooper S. (pic : c/o Lizzie Bravo / Apple Scruffs) Paul gets into his Radford after an allnighter at EMI on 8th August 1969, earlier that day the Beatles had shot the cover for what was to become 'Abbey Road'... (pic : unknown) Another 1969 shot, Paul has just parked the Rdaford up in the corner at Abbey Road... (pic : poss. Lizzie Bravo / Apple Scruffs) There are plenty more like this taken between 1966 and 1970 when the group were at their busiest in the studio. If anyone has any memories or car, music, film or TV related pics of the period please feel free to contribute...!
Horsetan
The August 1969 pic at Abbey Road is of interest, not because of the Radford Mini, but because of what appears to be a Citroen DS Safari parked alongside. Macca's later Aston DB6, LLO 840D, is now part of Aston's own historic collection and is unlikely ever to be owned privately again.
Rugd1022
Thanks Horsetan - I was wondering what the estate was on the left of that pic. I thought it might have been a Humber or something similar but obviously not! Ta for the info on the DB6 too - I knew it had been sold fairly recently but wasn't aware Aston had taken it under their wing. Good to know . I've got several shots of this car which I'll post later. Rugd1022
Hmmm... Citroen DS or Humber Shooting Brake.... first one with the correct answer wins a signed 'White Album' stamped '#0000001' !!! A quick Mini one before I nip out... a nice 'two for one' shot in the car park at Abbey Road taken in late March '67, John and Ringo have just got out of Paul's Radford and that's Ringo's Radford on the left... Ozexpatriate
This past weekend was the 50th anniversary of the Beatles first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show in the United States. This show marked the beginning of the so-called "British Invasion".

Rugd1022
Cheers Phil Another batch of pics - this one although very dark, shows John alongside his all black Radford Cooper S 'LGF 696D' in the car park at Abbey Road on 23rd February 1967, he was a terrible driver by all accounts and often rode in the passenger seat while his chauffeur Alf Bicknall drove him to and from London...(pic : c/o Apple Scruffs) Tuesday, 20th December 1966 and John arrives in his chauffeur driven Radford at Abbey Road, these are freeze frames from the ITN news footage that was shot that evening showing all four Beatles arriving to work on 'Strawberry Fields Forever'... Early 1967, George arrives at Abbey Road in his all black Radford Cooper S, which within a few months will have been transformed with a pyschedelic makeover... (first pic : c/o Apple Scruffs, second pic : BNPS.co.uk)) Back to 1966 with George in the Radford, pictured on 20th May that year at Chiswick House, West London for filming of the 'Rain' promo (pic : unknown but possibly a Robert Freeman outake)...
