More on the above shortly.

Dapol 59206 has arrived and immediately been ripped apart for a repaint. I have also lowered the exhaust which now looks great, removed the NRN aerials (one moulded and one etched) and the plinth the etched one sat on. I have filled the NRN attachment holes and then filed a flat recessed plinth as per real loco. Also the roof grill was sat up horrible but sorted this by bending the attachment tabs with pliers. All in all for a small amount of work it looks really good now. Next is the repaint which starts today.

Am I impressed with the new 59? I think so, sort of. Cannot believe the gestation period and to then get bits wrong is quite poor. It does look the part, is heavy and will no doubt turn out to be excellent when complete. The opening doors feel like an after thought on many levels. Not least they don’t really open due to the chassis block behind.

Anyway bring on the completed loco with new Legomanbiffo sound (ordered) and using the spare accurathrash speaker from the 92. More soon.

Hi Folks - I've decided to take the plunge and produce a DC Rail liveried Class 60.

I've got a Railfreight version on its way from Hattons and ordered transfers & nameplates from Railtec.

All I now need is to sort out the paint - is anyone able to point me in the direction of which shade to use please?

That looks very similar to actual primer grey, although perhaps with a slightly green/turquoise tinge to it. It'll look different in every photograph you see, but any cool light grey would probably look ok. Remember the RTR manufacturers rarely get it spot on either!

How do. Initially when I painted some DCR locos in the new scheme I just mixed my own paint (this was as soon as the first 56 was done and no paint was available.

Subsequently I have bought ready mixed paint in the correct colour from Rainbow Railways. I buy most my paint from them now. Good colours, easy to spray with an airbrush and the pots are quite big. They come highly recommended from

me Lloyd.

Thanks Andy - I shall get on the case with them :)

I've started work on converting the Loadhaul 60070 into DC Rail 60046 William Wilberforce.

The roof has had several coats of black Revell 07 and I've just finished applying the first coats of Rainbow Railways DC Rail grey as recommended by Andy7.

It's the first time that I've used Rainbow paint and my first impression is that it's excellent.  It needs a bit more thinning than Railmatch but its sprays beautifully once I'd got the thinning level right.

One thing that the coat has highlighted though is the Loadhaul logo showing through slightly.  I hadn't expected it to be an issue and the photo is a bit unforgiving under the halogen light but I need to have a bit of a think about either stripping it right back or accepting the imperfection (which will to some degree be covered by the Railtec transfers and a bit of weathering).

Main point is that for my first ever complete repaint I'm really enjoying the process!

to get around a full strip i sometimes just use IPA to remove any branding / numbers (any decals really etc) first before spraying the primer and then nothing will show through and you do not have to do a full strip! :)

Or very fine grade Wet&Dry sandpaper, to remove all the printed detail before the respraying starts....

Either way, the sprayed layer is so thin, that any detail ( numbers, nameplates, etc, even the split line between the original livery's shades of Grey ) will show through.

If you're not happy, now is the time to rectify it !

You'll only see the imperfections when you look at the finished project otherwise. 🙄

You'll find that actually putting paint on, is one of the less time consuming processes.

Preparing the surface, and masking up, are usually far more time consuming !

But please don't let any of this put you off....the satisfaction of producing the end result is worth it !!

Cheers,

Phil.

Absolutely Phil. It’s almost all in the prep.

I personally scratch all transfers off with a knife at 90 degrees to the surface (always done it this way). I then smooth over the whole item with micromesh (posh wet and dry). I also never fully paint strip the stuff I am painting.

Lloyd if you are mulling over whether to redo it then you have your answer. It will eat away at you later if you leave it.

Hi Andy - you're absolutely right on this point and as I'm typing, Amazon are on the case with some ultra fine wet and dry blocks!

It would've cranked me just knowing it was there even if it wasn't too visible.

Some you win, some you learn!

Bodyshell decoration is always worth rubbing down before repainting, a quick gauge to the extent of the problem before starting is to hold the bodyshell up to the light and look along it - this largely removes the influence of colour leaving the printed detail standing out - or not, depending on how thick it is. It looks particularly thick on this '60'.

I don't always use a primer when repainting models, this 'sighting' method is usually sufficient to identify areas still requiring attention.

Back on the topic of my workbench.

Dapol 59 paint is nearly complete, just yellow to go. Sound is fitted and chassis is ready to receive the repainted body into Freightliner G + W, still 59206. It’s a fun masking job doing this livery, I have previously done a 66 that turned out well.

A few pics of the Dapol 59 body compared to a Hattons 66 now both are in the same livery. The orange difference is rather noticeable! The 59 will be completed this coming week and then it can go to work on Badgers Cross.

I have (just airbrush weathering) nearly completed a Northern Rail 150206 repaint along with 56081 as it is today in BR Blue.

Update early next week.

Plenty more in work as well.

Looking good, wasn’t there some difference between the real oranges IIRC ?

I can’t recall, was it the orange in general or between 66s ?

I think it was just one of the 66’s was the colour of the Hattons 66623 as above. The rest were darker. I think it was 66413, off the top of my head.

 I think you're right.

The first real 66 painted in G&W orange (not 623) was a lighter shade than that used for the rest of the repaints. Hattons copied the lighter shade and the real 66623 carries the later/darker shade.

Update. 56081 finished and been running great on Badgers cross. Also took over completed Northern Rail 150205 to play with but the coupling disintegrated and won’t go back together (anyone have a spare powered one?), no pics of the naughty 150.

I have also almost finished a war flat with load, just a small amount of airbrush weathering and some buffer grease to go.
The 59 has had the yellow on it today, along with 47727 in its current guise. Also started on my TPE Mk5’s.

More next week.

59206 is nearly finished in Freightliner G+W livery. Just requires some hand weathering followed by the airbrush (I have already painted out the pickups and painted the wheels, they make a massive difference). The nameplates fitting and possibly a driver in the end not yet populated. It is fully modded up and detailed and fitted with Legomanbiffo sounds. I may in the future modify the lights to get the correct config but only if I can still have the yard light mode.
Really happy with this loco, it looks great with the mods/repaint and it runs superbly. Will add more pics when finally complete.

Nice workbench here. Being a bit of a wagon nut I was particularly interested in your super salmon build - by complete coincidence I started building my own 00 gauge super salmon in November too (it's nearing completion now)!

Thanks. Mine is basically finished apart from paint. It just slipped down the priority list when 59/TPE Mk5’s/warflats/various other stuff jumped the queue. I will re-commence work on it and the runners soon. Looking forward to having it completed as I do love engineering wagons.

Is yours on a thread?

Looking foward to seeing more. Your loco work is impressive though too.

I haven't documented it an awful lot on here but I do have a thread with other similar stuff

3 months has passed since I last put something on here!
Anyway I have finally completed some items.

59206 is now fully complete and weathered. I have sorted out the details that were wrong from the factory, complete repaint in Freightliner G+W, added a couple of drivers, added Legomanbiffo sounds and weathered it. Job done.

47727 is complete in its ex Calidonian sleeper livery with embellishments. Full rework and repaint of an older Bachmann 21 pin model, lots of details changed (buffers, filled body side steps, nose connectors etc), drivers painted and weathered. I can’t remember if this has sound or not, will find out during testing.

37423 is a sound fitted accurascale model. Stunning base model that has been weathered and really looks good for it. I have still got to add drivers (when they arrive from accurascale) and weather the fan whilst the body is off. I be also will do a little more to the ploughs at the same time.

Anyway enjoy the photos and key me know what you think.
