Popular Post magic_monkey09
greetings fellow rmweb users, I've finally gotten round to creating a layout thread after all these years. You may have noticed my layout from pictures in the gallery which I've used previously but never had a proper progress thread for you all to read. So now I've got my modelling mojo back I'll start by telling you a little about the layout itself which is situated in the attic. It consists of a continuous loop but with only one side scenic and the curves and fiddle yard bare track only. It's been a work in progress for many years and I'm constantly changing things and trying out new set ups. it is a fictional layout based loosely around the Cheltenham and Gloucester surrounding areas. This allows me to run Services operated by First Great Western, Arriva Trains Wales and Cross Country as well as the odd freight train here and there. My choice of controller for ages was the Hornby select of which I've had two but recently I've upgraded to the NCE powercab. All of the track is Hornby and the scenics by various companies. I do not have a station as I feel all layouts have stations so I thought I'd model the in between stretches of mainline not often modelled. this also allows me to create an open feel to the layout with minimal buildings that appear on other layouts. So here's a few of my latest pictures I've taken on my phone so you get the idea where I'm going with this : Edited August 10, 2014 by magic_monkey09

Tase
As David as said, looking forward to seeing this progress. Unusual to see a snow covered layout or diorama - very refreshing! Edited August 10, 2014 by Tase

Melangoose
Hi Magic Monkey Really like the layout, has a mainline feel to it. Good geographical location to run many types of train. Although I think you pics of the FGW HST are the best, is it a full rake? And is your FGW 150 done with vinyls? Look forward to more updates and pictures. Yes the HST is a full 2+8 set, i have one weathered and another pristine both full length. The FGW local lines 150 is a professional respray from Olivia's trains and not vinyl overlays like most others in this livery. Plenty more pics to come soon
Melangoose
Hi Magic Monkey Thanks for your reply, I wasn't aware that Olivia's Trains did a respray version of the FGW local lines class 150. I see the real units every day and your model looks amazing. I've had a look at the Olivia's web site, it is a shame that they don't do a Class 158 in that livery, I think that would be very popular. Thanks for the info on your HST fleet, I look forward to the next set of photographs Nigel

Very nice, i really like the scenics, how did you get the look that you have achieved?? thanks, the snow is made by Woodland scenics and just sprinkled over the layout to give a wintery scene.

magic_monkey09
not sure that last image is prototypical strictly speaking as just thinking about it now i'm pretty sure that a class 57 cannot haul a power car from the van end without the use of a barrier vehicle. magic_monkey09
Trailer First 41143 leaves old oak common on a low loader bound for Kilmarnock to be converted into a Trailer standard as First Great Western looks to increase standard class capacity across its HST fleet.
magic_monkey09
I really can easily imagine been snuggled down in my Wessex Trains overcoat (or FGW if ya must) warming myself with a cuppa think "urggh I gotta get out of this nice warm cab at the next station stop in a few minutes"....Thats kinda proper atmosphere on a layout! in a couple more months the layout will have a very festive feel to it. might have to run a christmas special charter

Melangoose
Hi Great set of pictures, looking forward to your next post. Was at Cheltenham station last Monday (the area your layout is set), to meet up with a fellow modeller. saw lots of the stock you have:- First Great Western - HST First Great Western - Class 150 Cross Country - HST Cross Country - Voyager Cross Country - Class 170 Arriva - Class 150 EWS - Class 66 on Coal train DBS - Class 66 on Steel service it is a busy location, and also saw a Southwest Trains Class 158 on hire to FGW (embarrassingly it failed at Gloucester with me on it). Thanks for your info re the Hornby FGW HST's in an earlier post, I have a full rake and am hoping to get another (at the moment just have the TGS). Look forward to seeing 41143 back in service when its been converted to a Trailer Second.
magic_monkey08
A few pictures of my latest acquisitions, FGW Thames Turbo units alongside my weathered HST. I've read that these are tricky to DCC hardwire so I'm looking to get them professionally done, any recommendations?
