1977joey
Hi everyone, 1st episode of a summer saturday at Shawbury Foregate. Loco hauled trains & strenthened DMU's were a feature of summer saturdays in the 80's to the holiday resorts. Aberystwyth had 3 through trains to & from London Euston on a summer saturday in the late 80's...one of them is represented in the following pictures... 37254 has just been released from the loco stabling point the old Platform 2 awaiting the arrival of it's train, the 12:41 to Aberystwyth (Ex Euston) A 4 car Class 150 Sprinter approaches Platform 6 with the 12:25 to Wolverhampton (10:15 ex Aberystwyth) A class 31 waits for the road at Platform 3 on an empty van train to Chester A 6 car DMU waits at Platform 7 having arrived at 12:10 from Chester, this train reverses at 12:19 going forward to Llandudno The 12:19 to Llandudno departs Platform 7 Next InterCity liveried Class 47 approaches platform 4 with the 12:41 to Aberystwyth (Ex Euston) The loco is quickly detached while the Class 37 is coupled to the other end The class 47 will then wait in the centre road for the 13:25 Aberystwyth to London Euston to arrive to take that forward to Wolverhampton 47535 arrives at Platform 7 with the 12:39 Liverpool Lime Street to Cardiff Central As a 3 car West Midlands PTE class 101 arrives at platform 5 on the local from Wolverhampton 37254 gets the road & growls out of Platform 4 Cheers for now, Mark

scruff
Excellent Mark... Have you done anything about the ride height on your Mk2 coaches? From what I've read both here and on the Ngauge forum a 0.5mm washer between the bogie and coach floor helps to level them up with Farish's Mk1s and minimises the step in roof heights. Keep up the good work! Cheers Mark
1977joey
So many different camera angles and some nice close ups. Nice work. Regards - Steve Thanks Steve, glad you like it Still a lot of 'bits' to do though before I'm entirely happy with it, though with the nice weather & still lots to do on the house, I'll probably wait for the winter months before getting it fully finished & play trains when I get chance in the meantime Wonderful Mark, great modelling and pictures. Many thanks steve Excellent Mark... Have you done anything about the ride height on your Mk2 coaches? From what I've read both here and on the Ngauge forum a 0.5mm washer between the bogie and coach floor helps to level them up with Farish's Mk1s and minimises the step in roof heights. Keep up the good work! Cheers Mark Hi Mark, Regarding the Mark 2's, I havent as yet no, but there is a definite difference with the height. I may look at that later on. I have been having issues with my Class 47's mind with erratic running & the couplers causing derailments to either the leading coach of a rake or the 47 itself. All my bends are 2nd & 3rd radius too so this shouldn't be happening & it's frustrating. I've only kept rapido couplers on my loco's because my Mark 2 air con rakes are of the old tooling without NEM coupling sockets. Once we get the new Farish air con Mark 2's for my InterCity rakes which will have NEM sockets, I'll convert all my loco's & stock to the dummy Dapol knuckle couplers which i've already done with my DMU's & they're great. I'll have to ponder on what to do in the meantime. All the best, Mark
1977joey
Hi Everyone, Been a while since I've posted, but I've been doing a little more construction on the station. I've constructed canopies for the bay platforms. Originally I wasn't going to do these because of them obscuring the views of the trains, so I've compromised on the canopy down Platforms 6 & 7 by doing a shortened version to that on Platforms 4 & 5. Anyway, here is what I've been upto..... Construction of the new canopies with clear plasticard, with the pains of glass outlined with a permanent marker The canopies in situ & painted. I'm yet to glue them down after detailing underneath with nameboards, clocks & platform numbers. Note the shorter canopy on Platforms 6 & 7, so you can still get good views of the trains. A Class 150/1 waits with a Birmingham New Street train at Platform 5 framed by the new canopy Cheers for now guys, Mark

1977joey
As usual they look brilliant Mark. Excellent as always Mark.. I always look forward to your updates, Superb layout and great photo's.. Thank You! Cheers Mark Cheers for the Great feedback Mark & Scott, glad your enjoying the photo's :) Well i've finally got round to gluing on the new canopy to Platforms 4 & 5. I've decided not to bother with the one on platforms 6 & 7 because it really does obscure views to the trains & the short version I was going to put on didn't look very good to me. The following pictures are showing the new canopy on a busy summer saturday evening. I have also had my 2 new Class 150/2 Sprinter units, at an eye watering price after it went up a few times I now have a massive hole in my wallet lol! These are the most modern train on the layout which is mainly set between 1986 to early 1988. A shot of the new canopy showing a brand new Class 150/2 Sprinter standing empty at Platform 7 having arrived on a 'Transpennine' service from Scarborough, having being detached from a north wales bound unit at Chester (a service I've extended from Wrexham to Shawbury with modellers licence) The 5 car DMU at Platform 5 is the 19:09 all stations to Cardiff Central A close shot of the Class 150/2 which is waiting for the road to the carriage sidings to be cleaned & watered. This will then form a late service to Chester. Later 37506 arrives with the Summer saturday only 19:32 'The Snowdonian' Pwllheli to London Euston service with 7 InterCity Mark 1's in tow 37506 is being detached ready for the run round to take the Euston service forward to Wolverhampton where it will give way to a class 86 Electric & finally a last shot of the new canopy. 1977joey
Hi, Sorry to take things off topic slightly but was wondering about the new Farish 150/2. Would you say the've used the correct shade of grey on the bodyside, ie executive light grey, or is it like the silver grey used on the 150/1 that came in the train set a number of years back? That set 150/1 was too 'reggie rail' in colour. Hoping it's been corrected for this release see. Cheers, Paul Hi Paul, It deffo is executive grey (almost cream) with a coating of dust for it's weathering. I have the 150/1 also in the dark blue Provincial livery, & as you say, that is the same silvery grey as Regional Railways livery. Hope this helps, Mark

1977joey
Hi everyone, No updates as such, but nipped to Shawbury this morning to find the station mainly 'Sprinter' occupied..... 150132 is waiting at Platform 6 with the 10:25 all stations to Wolverhampton, 150114 is Not in use at Platform 5, while in the distance at Platform 3b, the latest traction for 1987 is a Class 150/2 on the 10:19 to Chester Then finally on an afternoon out this Thursday, I saw a real 150, No 150150 at Chester station. These & the rest of the Sprinter family feel like classic traction now compared to all the new foreign built units....So thought I'd take a shot of this 30 year old unit Cheers for now, Mark
1977joey
Hi everyone, Well as per the weather today has been pretty abysmal! So as it was my day off I've actually sat & operated Shawbury Foregate to it's timetable. I've also replaced most of my couplings on my loco hauled stock with the Dapol dummy knuckle coupler. This is so much more pleasing to the eye than the rapido & I no longer have derailments with my Class 47's as the rapido kept catching the buffers on bends. On my Poole era bodied air con Mark 2 coaches, I've simply glued the new couplings to the bogies on the outter ends of the rakes & where the Buffet car is in the centre of the rakes (for the 'Aber' services') Here's some pictures from todays running session 47535 is at Platform 4 with the 10:38 'The WelshMan/Y Cymro' Holyhead to Cardiff service. A 108 is at Platform 6 with the 11:05 all stations to Cardiff while at Platform 7 is the re-platformed 10:50 Shawbury to Aberystwyth service with 37430 Cwmbran in charge in this shot after the 'Cardiff' had departed Platform 4, a Class 31 bought in the 10:47 to Liverpool Lime Street, while shortly before that arrived, the 10:39 arrival from London Euston (Terminates at Shawbury) had arrived at Platform 3 which also connects with the 'Aber' at platform 7 A shot of the Class 31 bound for Liverpool & the 47 on the Euston terminator fast forwarding to an hour later & a HST is on the 10:49 InterCity 125 service to Newcastle (Ex Swansea) while a new Class 150/2 is at Platform 5 on the 11:56 Shawbury to Nottingham via Birmingham Later, Dave the chargeman is seen waiting to dispatch the 12:30 to Wolverhampton (ex Aberystwyth) from Platform 6 The 12:19 Birmingham New Street to Chester gets the road on Platform 4 formed of a 4 car DMU A Birdseye shot of the 12:30 'Sprinter' to Wolverhampton at Platform 6, while at Platform 5 a 'Classic' DMU waits to form the 13:05 all stations to Cardiff A Class 150/1 Sprinter 150132 is stabled in the holding sidings having worked a terminating service from Chester. This is being prepared to form part of the 14:50 Aberystwyth/Pwllheli service later in the afternoon A stabled Class 25 in the old bay Platform 1 (no longer used for passenger trains) A 4 car Class 150/1 Sprinter is on the 12:41 Wolverhampton to Pwllheli seen having come to a stand at Platform 4b Later in the afternoon, The 14:41 from London Euston has arrived at Platform 4 while over on platform 3 is the 14:46 Cardiff Central to Manchester Piccadilly A birseye view of the north end of the station Meanwhile at the southend, a 4 car Sprinter is forming the 14:50 Shawbury to Aberystwyth/Pwllheli seen at Platform 6. 150132 already 'on the blocks' 150114 having being coupled up. This train divides at Machynlleth with 150114 continuing to Aberystwyth while 150132 going on to Pwllheli. The empty stock off the Euston stands at Platform 4 Later 37430 has arrived back at Shawbury's Platform 3 at 15:25 from Aberstwyth, the stock will be cleaned & watered before going forward ECS to Crewe A Class 101 3 car West Midlands PTE set has arrived from Wolverhampton at platform 5 A class 25 hauled oil train bursts out of the tunnel & past the signal box bound for Stanlow The train comes to a rest in the centre road for a crew change before setting off.... Then gets the road.... Cheers for now guys, Mark

1977joey
Hi everyone,Been a while since I posted. You may not be too surprised to hear that I'm actually thinking of scrapping Shawbury in favour of a new project (as I know I've done this with previous layouts). To be honest, I've lost a bit of interest in the 'same old' & fancy trying something different. My era won't be changing, but the location will be. I've been thinking of modelling a fictional terminus based in the Chester area. Maybe 'Chester Central' which would be a short branch off the mainline, with some north wales coast services calling there. I've always liked the idea of a terminus with trains reversing & loco hauled services changing engines, or running round. It would be a through terminus with a freight avoiding line & also thinking of an oil terminal for the tanker train from Stanlow. I have been drawing up some plans, but nothing yet has been finalised. In the meantime, I actually visited Shrewsbury the other week, the inspiration for Shawbury & took some pictures. These pictures will probably conclude this thread before I clear my board to make way for the new project. Buldings will be re used as will some bits of the station aswell as the main building. Cheers for now guys Mark
