This loco, shed plate 8C, Speke Junction (a Liverpudlian then) was spotted earlier today - must be on a running in turn following a "General" at Darlington (well, that's my excuse anyway :sungum: ).  Here she is arriving...

Brilliant :)

Cant beat a bit of 9F power Brian, your scenery is looking nice and settled now and very natural. Excellent work so far mate, great stuff.

Thanks chaps but as I keep saying, you haven't seen my handiwork in the flesh so to speak. Oh and the pics are carefully cropped to minimise the mount of unfinished stuff.  Anyway, many thanks for your kind words.

Best Regards,

Brian.

Todays story is a tale of two D49s.  I know they are "only" Hornby RailRoad items and are wrong in many ways but I just love them.  They are a nice compact tender loco and there is something about those large driving wheels and the slow majestic sweep of the rods.  The mechanisms as I have said before are superb.  I am almost tempted to acquire another because they are relatively cheep as chips but I digress.

D49 Shire Westmorland approaches with a coastal service...

post-1115-0-75912700-1493485733_thumb.jpg

...passing D49 Hunt The Petchey ready to back down on the train for a quick reversal.

post-1115-0-01608100-1493485788_thumb.jpg

The Shire and train enters platform 1...

post-1115-0-20081900-1493486082_thumb.jpg

...and the Hunt promptly backs down on to the train...

...and departs on time.

Westmorland then backs down to the turntable...

post-1115-0-86560600-1493487037_thumb.jpg

...is turned and awaits the next coastal service for a quick reversal.

Awesome pics :) I got a book this week about the railways around Grimsby, I think (I maybe wrong) that a lot of the stock on your layout is quite similar :)

The layouts looking great :)

Thanks Dan.  My layout is set a bit further north, certainly north of the Humber and possibly north of the Tees.  I've been working on a back story (and proper station title) and all will be revealed in due course - a pastiche of North Yorkshire and County Durham :O

Brian.

REAL ENGINE FAILURE

Earlier, a steam loco failed

The Gresley 2-6-2 hauled local passenger service is seen here arriving...

...and about to run round the train...

post-1115-0-98876100-1493657355_thumb.jpg

...after which the failure occurred.  My venerable split chassis version of the V1/V3 locked its valve gear because the rear driver half axles have come apart and "de-quartered".  The loco was removed but a quick fix seems unlikely.  So the Thompson L1 deputised for the departing service.

I'll contact Bachmann to get a quote for repair of the V1/V3 and weigh up the cost of that against buying the latest DCC ready chassis version.

Brian.

The postman delivered a triple set of presflo Tunnel Cement wagons today to go with my other two triple sets.  The rake of nine wagons looks good behind the class 26.  Here are the usual arrival pics...

The presflos obviously need severe weathering.  Now, where's that white spray can? :P

Nice looking rake of Pressflo's, Brian - but I agree, they need a good seeing to!

(even on sale, the cost of a realistic looking string of wagons soon adds up, doesn't it?  Don't even mention suburbans in teak!)

Cheers

Scott

I'm fortunate in a way that I think that, with only a few exceptions, I've got enough passenger rolling stock to be going on with - I've been collecting stuff going back 13 years or so.  Some of it is quite old (for example my Bachmann Thomson coaches which are the earlier version and cost I think no more than about £12 or £15 each - the new improved versions are about £45 each - I'll stick with what I've got) and a few kit builds (my rake of Gresley suburbans are Kirk kits which cost about £13 each and run on Bachmann Thomson bogies at about £6 a pair - I keep looking at the Hornby Gresley and Thomson subs and then the price and I think, er no thanks).  I have a similar policy for locos and dmus, I'm quite happy with my Hornby Class 101 metro-cam dmus (which I've detailed a bit) rather than the newer Bachmann version and of course my Hornby RailRoad D49s.  But I couldn't do without the Q6s (although I didn't buy the second one until the discounted price dropped below £100) and the K1 because of what and where I am modelling.  Similarly if a rtr J27 was available I propably would push the boat out irrespective of the price.

Brian.

Long ago I bought a pack (of 3) Parkside Dundas coal loads for my Hornby 21 ton hoppers.  Back in the day, I only installed one of the loads.  Having stumbled across the other two last week, I ordered two more packs to complete my rake of 9 hoppers.

post-1115-0-03964300-1493984896_thumb.jpg

When they arrived yesterday, I realised why I had only gotten round to fitting one - they don't actually fit!

post-1115-0-73024400-1493984957_thumb.jpg

The coal loads are over 30mm wide and the older hoppers are about 27mm wide internally, the newer hoppers just over 28mm wide.  Then it all came flooding back when I examined the one I'd fitted back in the day - I had filed it down to fit.  So out came the bastard file (no, I'm not swearing - that is the correct name harking back to my school metalwork days :) ).

post-1115-0-15480500-1493986496_thumb.jpg

Instead of holding the file, I held the coal load and ran the long edges repeatedly across the file to get them to fit.  Plenty of elbow grease later...

post-1115-0-17971100-1493986842_thumb.jpg

...the Q6 hauls the "full" hoppers away.

Regards,

Brian.

Somewhat off topic but I came across this on "that tube thing"...

Not quite London to Brighton, a bit too fast, but the slowed down stops, especially York and KX, are really something.

Brian.

Agreed just a bit too fast. Having worked on a number of signalling projects on that line I'm reasonably familiar with the geography and track layouts and I struggled to spot places as they rushed by. Thanks for showing it.

And only £13.40 return from Hartlepuddle to York. . . .Excellent service.

John

Here's another one for you at normal speed.

It's really disappointing how much of the modern railway is pared to the bone - so many stations gone or just reduced to a bus shelter.

Brian.

Thanks for that Brian,

this was my local line. Born and raised in Brockley Whins but the station was called Boldon Colliery then, many hours spotting there. The over bridge is still there but the GT Andrews station building was demolished in the 70's. When the Vigo line closed the class 24 hauled ore trains got to Consett from Tyne Dock via the junction at Boldon Colliery.

Seaburn station for the football at Roker Park.

Spotting trips to Gateshead, Hartlepool, Stockton, Darlington etc. Some good memories but hardly any track now.

Regards,

Tom

Thanks Tom.  Allegedly the world is now a better place but quite frankly I'm not sure, or perhaps I'm just a nostalgia freak?

Brian.
