Just want to say thank you for your thread- I've been really inspired by all your hard work (where do you find the time to be just so productive!) and the skill that you've put in. Especially enjoyed the geared overtype build. Thank you - your thread (and many others on RMweb) has done a great deal to help to keep the black dog at bay this year, to encourage me to keep trying, to pick up the soldering iron and have another go at a project when all the day-to-day drudgery seems completely overpowering. Keep up the good work! And the merriest of Christmases to you.

Thankyou very much John, it was the most technical & complicated thing ive ever made and i dont think i'll be able to top it for a very long time

 

i'm not much of a festive person, i dont care about a tree, decorations or wishing merry christmasses, but since a lot of people are posting snowy photos in their threads it looks like i'm somewhat obliged to do the same

This one isnt a new build, its an existing getting a refurb

 

its used to be HLR No20 which i built in early 2017 with the body made form fruit crate ply, the chassis from firework sticks and loaded with gravel.

The first thing was changing the brake gear, the corners had to be cleaned to be patched up

rather than cutting the gravel out, it was easier to paint black and cover with coal

It was now all nicely painted up in black ready for lettering but while planning it, i noticed that they dont have the diagonal strapping so that had to come out

Yeah - I quite agree about Christmas Sir Douglas - adverts for huge amounts of food and perfume whilst there are so many who are homeless, cold and frightened and hungry. Then it all stops on Christmas Day, the ads turn to holidays and gym membership - it's so transparent and everyone falls for it EVERY TIME!!! Still - the Solstice has passed and, infinitesimally slowly, the days get longer and Spring will be here.  And, best of all, work's stopped for a week and when the kits start to fight and the dog craps everywhere I can escape to the shed, scrape the sawdust and bits of broken motorcycle off the work bench and get the piercing saw and bits of brass out. I can blot out Johnson (the odious, mendacious toad, not the magnificent SW), and the world is suddenly more bearable for a bit. Here's some proper snow: Stay cool folks!

Another 2 wagons have been removed from the Halfmoon fleet. Both bought in 2016 but seperately, a Gloucester 12 ton as No 30 and a GW 13 ton kit as No33.

The GW is being repainted as GW as it should be and the 12 ton will become a Pope & Pearson

Back here then while i'm having a falling out with Deffors and continuing with the BR Hunslet and ive made a start on another loco that ive been itching to do for some time.

 

You may remember the heavily modifed Atlas chassis, well that wasnt working out well and took some damage to a gear so it has been put aside. I'm now working on a Hornby tender drive unit to fit as replacement, the cab floor needs patching in and strengthening which is now being done.

The itch has been scratched so to say, Ive made a start on Boulton's Welbeck. The wheels are old OO Princess which are 3'6" in 7mm and they are fixed to 1/8th rod with Loctite 603. If this stuff is good enough for the model engineers i watch on youtube who do 5" and 7 1/4" live steam then its good enough for my little O gauge. The motor out of my now dwindling collection is a Rivarossi which came from a US HO chassis a club friend was getting rid of some years ago, this will fit snuggly into the firebox. The front wheelset is a Slaters 2'6" wagon. The frames are 1mm brass and currently soldered together for cutting

The prototype which will already be familiar to fellow Boulton enthusiasts, a 2-4-0 Tender engine bought with another similar from the L&Y at Mile Platting in 1867 and converted into a tank, which could have been an 1840's Bury 2-2-2 which were rebuilt. ive compiled my research so far in the word doc attached below

my Drawing so far that ive doing for a few months but its no where near done yet. The drawing isnt accurate to prototype for the chassis is drawn for me to build in O gauge so the frames are a bit narrower than they should be and ive left off the sprung buffers on the front for wooden dumb like on the back. the saddle tank profile is my own guess work and is based on a photo of Mountaineer that Killian posted on Facebook about 2 years ago.

Frames seperated and cleaned up. The axleboxes were made up as 1 long piece, soldering the layers together, then drilled last night on the club's pillar and cut out this morning. The front driving axle slot (middle) is intentionally taller than the rear (right) as i want to give sompensation to the front driver and the leading axle (left), the holes in the frames will be the pivot points for the beams

Putting one wheel onto each axle was easy enough in the lathe chuck but the other end needed a jig, so i  made one out of 2 pieces of thick brass (which were originally a MERG point motor kit that a friend was throwing away) and screwed onto frame spacers. Each has a slot cut in to sit the axle into and they have smaller holes to locate crankpin bolts to set the quartering. Each side then has 2 strips soldered on to set the wheels up against for the back-to-back.

So far the frames are together with a stretcher at each end and the Motor mounting plate inbetween the drivers.
