Recommended Posts

expoEM 2010 will be held on 15-16 May as follows:

Bracknell Leisure Centre

Berkshire RG12 9SE

Saturday 15 May 10.30-5.30

Sunday 16 May 10.00 - 4.30

We have a selection of 13 top quality, inspiration layouts in both EM and P4

comprehensive trade support - including a number of new traders attending this year for the first time.

Demonstrations by some of the country's top modellers to "show you how"

And our popular lecture programme.

This year we also have a very special "guest layout" in attendance. The idea being to feature the very best of finescale modelling away from 4mm/ft.

Watch out for further details but in the meantime get the dates in your diary. Whatever your interest in railway modelling, expoEM has something for everyone.

We edge ever closer to expoEM in May and things are falling into place.

I mentioned the new "guest layout" concept in my previous post and am very pleased to announced that Trevor Nunn has agreed to bring along his inspirational and much admired East Lynn layout. As some of you will know he has just completed the extension, Nunstanton, which he will bring along also.

Of course the eagle-eyed will have noted that this is S Scale 1/64th scale and the S Scale Society are celebrating their 64th birthday this year....it was no coincidence that we approached Trevor to exhibit with us this year. We are also delighted to welcome the S Scale Society stand to expoEM this year and be a part of their celebrations...cheers

PS my previous post had an error - closing is at 6pm on Saturday 15 May - not 5.30pm

The full programme will be available for free download at www.emgs.org very soon. But to whet your appetite I can say that we have the biggest ever trade support at expoEM 2010 with almost 50 specialist traders - many of whom only attend a very limited number of exhibitions each year. In particular we are delighted to welcome the following traders to expoEM for the first time:

The Engine Shed - stocking a wide range of r-t-r and various other modelling bits and pieces

Shawplan - with their comprehensive range of detailing components

Realistic Models - All the scenic items you need

MARC models - suppliers of coach kits

also welcome back to DC Kits after an absence in 2009.

Legoland and Windsor are only a few miles away... and Coral Reef is a terrific indoor adventure pool less than a mile away so plenty to keep the family entertained whilst you spend time at expoEM 2010

see you there..

expoEM once again falls on cup final day. but fear not! if like me you are hoping to see Portsmouth pull off one final twist to their extraordinary season then bracknell Leisure Centre does have a bar and TV screen)))) So you can combine a visit to expo with a look at the footy. alternatively you can come along on sunday.

for me the football season is over despite having tickets to see Man city undone at the Emirates on Saturday.

Looking forward to this year as well as a chance to see New Hey properly.

The 'secret guest' (it's on the expo flyer - so no longer a secret) is a fine choice btw - the recently extended version will also be a first for me and many no doubt. Top stuff!

What time is the Cup Final? - this is the ideal time to visit the show because the roads will be empty B)

So close, yet so far! I can see the venue from my house but the weekend it falls on is always slap-bang in the middle of exam season down here in Cardiff. C'est la vie.

The very best with the show Graeme - It looks like you've got a cracking line up!

Over many years a group of us travelling to ExpoEM at Bletchley from Worcester, the return journey on Saturday was timed to begin at kick-of, we basically had the roads to ourselves, the radio on and stopped in a road-side tea shed about half time. We reached home just after the final whistle....

"Stash gear" sounds rather suspect! ;-)

Too right is does. Life as an exhibition manager is hassle enough without advertising of stashed gear at the show on a public website. Police raids we can do without ....... this is unless the exhib manager gets first dibs :) ;)

Witout wishing to kick off the melee of a "discussion" on where to hold Expo, is there any prospect it'll move to a more central location in the foreseeable future?

My window of opportunity isn't going to allow enough time to make the trip so far South to Bracknell this year, just as it didn't last year, and I do miss the annual pilgrimmage.

For the easing of Mr Vee's mind can i just make it abundantly clear that there will be no illegal substances behind the layout. Nearest we get to that is a sniff out of the MEK bottle.

However I cannot guarantee the absence of Islay's finest dry.gif

I guess that's the problem. Central geograhically or central population spread? Personally speaking, Bracknell is close and easily accessible for those of us who can access the M3 or M4. I guess those more central geographically can access the M1/M6, but that would be less attractive for some of us southern softies.

You'll never please all the people all the time and fuel prices are making travel more and more prohibitive for all of us who don't enjoy company funded travel. Before anyone shouts, I know it is a taxable benefit as I've been there before, but having to fund motoring from your own pocket is certainly more expensive and will cause many of us to think about the cost of travel to a show.

Graeme

Is it possible to post a list of the layouts and demonstrators for the show for those people that are not (yet) EMGS members. Us EMGS members already have the details and the list of layouts this year suggests it to be potentially the best Expo EM I will have been to.

Cheers

Kipford, if you go to the EMGS web site, and anybody can see this, you'll find the following, which is not the latest list, but a good start:

Layouts featuring at expoEM 2010 are:

Broadford (3.5mm scale/18.2mm gauge) by Iain Hunter

Iain has traded BR 1970s ECML for a new layout, Broadford, located 72Km north of Melbourne and 216 metres above sea level, in the sheep and cattle district of south central Victoria. The model is 3.5mm scale and features 5ft 3in broad gauge using EM track with prototypical sleeper spacing. So EM track is matched to HO Finescale – another first for expoEM!

Kitehouses (P4) by Dave Hawkins & Tony Sullivan

Based loosely on Seahouses, the terminus of the North Sunderland Light Railway, Kitehouses an independent light railway taken over by BR around 1949. The layout was entered in the Challenge at Scaleforum 2008 and is a demonstration of how to build a finescale layout with extensive use of kit built buildings and r-t-r locos and stock.

Lee-on-the-Solent (P4) by South Hampshire Model Railway Club

Modelled on the light railway built from the hamlet of Lee Bittern connecting with the LSWR Gosport branch at Fort Brockhurst. Passenger services ceased in 1931 and so ended the dream of a seaside resort to rival Bournemouth served by the branch. The original layout dates from 1979 but was substantially rebuilt and extended by the current owners, the East Hampshire Area Group of the Scalefour Society, during the 1990s.

Merthyr Riverside (EM) by Rob Kinsey

Set in the early post grouping period this freight only operation assumes that the Brecon and Merthyr Railway built its own station at Merthyr instead of collaboration with the Vale of Neath Railway.

Minories (EM) by The Model Railway Club

A layout built as a tribute to the design first published by Cyril Freezer 50 years ago. Set in BR(E) Region, the period is 1970s/early 80s suburban pre-electrification, Class 31s,

baby Deltics, 105s, 116s, 127s and Mk1 suburban coaches dominate the scene.

New Hey (EM) by Andy Cooper

The line through New Hey is what is now known as the "Oldham Loop", the line that runs from Manchester Victoria, up Werneth Bank to Oldham, then on to Rochdale and back to Victoria.

Andy’s representation is set roughly in the period from 1960 - 1968, and it is always the last two weeks of June. Why? Come to expoEM and find out.

Penlan (EM) by Sandy Croall

Sandy’s representation of LNWR in South Wales during the period 1900-1914.

Rixworth Green (P4) by Colin Wilson

This is Colin’s venture into P4 modelling begging the question whether there is any gauge or scale in which he has not dabbled! Rixworth is set in the 1920s and located in the Surrey/Sussex border. It has a strong LBSCR influence.

Roadwater (EM) by Stephen Walker

A GWR “might have been†branchline based on proposals by the West Somerset Railway in 1857. Operation during expoEM will be set in the 1950s.

Saxlingham (EM) by Dave Tailby

The year is 1966 and Saxlingham represents a station on an imaginary line from Fakenham to Sheringham via Blakeney. Main traffic is coal, sugar beet and various agricultural shipments.

Stainmore Summit (EM) by Richard Nice

It was 1,370ft above sea level, had three passenger trains each way daily but for more than a century this stretch of railway carried a staggering volume of mineral traffic feeding the steel industry on both sides of the Pennines. This is an evocative portrayal of one of the most isolated spots on the rail network.

Sutton Dock (EM) by Tony Gee and Ken Hill

How many people have a dream one night about a possible layout and then decide to build it for an exhibition 8 months later? Well that is precisely what Tony has done and dragged Ken into the project too. It is a dock setting doubtless somewhere on the east coast.

Traders: About 40 Specialist traders will be attending and include a few new names who have not attended an expoEM event previously. We are delighted to welcome for the first time: Dave Heswell from "The Engine Shed"; Nick Gilham "Realistic Models"; Mike Whitchurch "Shawplan"; Mike Radfford "MARC Models" and Tony Eastwood "Wealistic Models". Since last year there have also been changes in ownership of various businesses and we welcome Martin Breakspear who has taken over Blacksmith Models and Derek Russan who has taken over "Eileen's Emporium". We welcome back Charles Petty from dc kits who was unable to attend last year's show.

List of other traders confirmed: Radley Models, Brilliant Baseboards, Brassmasters, Southwark Bridge Models, Wild Swan Publications, abs Models, Dart Castings/Monty/MJT, Exactoscale/P4 Track Co.,Wizard 51L, Comet Models, GW Models, Dave Newband, Alan Gibson, South Eastern Finecast, London Road Models, Roxey Mouldings, Sunningwell Command Control, Branchlines, Steam Age, Mike King, Michael L Thorp, Hobby Holidays, Isinglass Models, High Level, Model Railway Developments, Roger Carpenter, C+L Finescale, Timber Tracks (with a demonstration), Ambis Engineering and S Kits.

Representatives from the HMRS and dmu will also be attending.

What do you mean! We have three weeks to finish Sutton Dock! Must get on with it. Photos and a few details are on the 2010 challenge thread. Progress is quite rapid now, especially as Ken has gone into 4th or 5th gear and has produced a lovely backscene and a fiddle yard in what seems like a couple of hours! We haven't stopped working long enough to take pictures this week but I will see about an update when I go over to Ken's next week.

the list of layouts posted ealier is up to date (I think!!)

The full colour programme is now available for free download on www.emgs.org

It includes some new traders to expo as well as the usual range of specialist suppliers.

One or two earlier expressed concern about distance to travel. One option would be to book into the hotel and make a weekend of it.

2 people sharing will only cost £22.50 each incl breakfast (not bad for a 4* hotel) and massively discounted. Simply call karen Gaskin in reservations quoting 140510G.

Penlan, you did what I was after which was to get a list of the layouts onto the forum rather than have to go to the website. It may be we can interest some more non EM/P4 modelers to come to what looks to be a superb show. I should have done it myself but to be honest I had only just stepped off a plane from the USA a week after I was supposed to get home and the brain was bit frazzled. Looking forward to seeing Penlan in the flesh at last.

It does sound great value but it doesn't make it any nearer to us poor souls in the frozen north or grant me another day in the week to spend there! Besides if I suggested a weekend in Bracknell to my missus, I suspect the idea would be greeted with something of a lukewarm reception. To then be offered the option of a superb exhibition or I go on my own would undoubtedly warm things up rather rapidly I fear!

Speaking as one who exhibited there last year I must say even from frozen North Wales it took 4 1/2 hours, but the venue is excellent and despite the hotel being one of the most difficult in the world to find was rather superb!

My only regret is that it's not a little bit further north, but an observation Graham NOT a criticism!!
