RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted March 11, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 11, 2015 Hi again Clive As usual decent roof shots are rare! Had a trawl back through Kevin Derrick's excellent "Looking back at the 24 and 25s" last night and it seems to me that there may be a pattern 25/1 - new exhaust port in existing roof panel as 5230 appears to have 25/2 - new exhaust port in square panel as per Bachmann shell 25/3 - At least some - if not all - have new exhaust port in L shaped panel as you describe Does that co-incide with your thoughts I wonder? Looks like 5230 might be about to have its roof rebuilt again.... Will also go back and recheck all my Bacchy models to see what they have done with this although I fear the answer Kind regards Phil Hi Phil Have started to go through my books, they match the pattern. Locos with the L shaped panel, Class 24s, 25/0s and 25/3s had them from new.
45125
Hi, Just to throw a spanner in the works, the exhaust porting that sits in just on the GRP roof actually sits in a a depression in the roof. The top of the exhaust is almost level with the roof and has on the inboard and outboard side a gap until the depression meets the arc of the roof. peak experience
Regarding filling small gaps, I use lengths of slaters microstrip glued in place. Virtually any small gaps can be filled with various lengths built up in layers. I then sand it all flat and the jobs done. I find it gives not only a better finish but it's also resilient in a way that fillers aren't.
RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted March 20, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 20, 2015 Just to throw a spanner in the works, Don't think any 25's had those steam heat boilers, they were all Stones! Mike.

RMweb Gold Phil Bullock Posted March 21, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 21, 2015 When things get to this point the end is in sight! Transfers by Fox - number sets by Rail Tec, thanks Steve, much better than aligning individual digits. Just need another coat of varnish, glazing reinstated, final details including headcodes and weathering . No works plates for 7612 - but what are the correct plates for 5230? Looking at Extreme Etchings is it Built Derby 1962 or something else? Cheers Phil
25901
And remember that D7612 only had 2 worksplates when built, she now carries 4 but she has the cabs off "Tamworth Castle" now. Also she never had the water filler hatch on the body just a blacking panel (bit late now) As for the roof detail try this http://www.sddt.co.uk/pix-25/IMG_4064-b.JPG The small panel on the compressor room roof (or boiler room roof on steam fitted loco's) is a vent to help the heat escape as there are large resister banks and 2 compressors in there, the heat in that compartment was very high which was not helped when BR fitted a panel over the grilled panel. That's why so many 25,s now have the panel removed to help ventilation
RMweb Gold Phil Bullock Posted March 22, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 22, 2015 Many thanks that's very useful gen Should have spotted the boiler filler access hatch - verdamnt! - but she seemed to be a shy loco post green pre TOPS - that's the problem with modelling a short period. And had assumed (plainly wrongly) that the body shell was correct for 7612 except for the tablet catcher cut outs and concentrated on sorting 5230's errors So now off so soundly thrash myself with birch twigs.... 25901
There both standard bodied 25/3's (non boiler) the same as 7612 but never fitted with a tablet catcher
25901
Sorry I forgot to point out one of the biggest mistakes people make with 25 roofs, There not steel over the engine including the removable panel. They are aluminium covered with fiberglass. They get painted over when they get too dirty to clean as the fiberglass is a pain to clean on the inside by hand but quite a lot of loco's did not get this area painted if these panels got steam cleaned with big exam's https://www.flickr.com/photos/blue-diesels/12431354494/ http://www.rail-online.co.uk/p817466263/h1987BA34#h1987ba34 https://www.flickr.com/photos/62813558@N02/11229070486/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/62813558@N02/14234055757/ And this one should help for the roof layout of a 25/3 https://www.flickr.com/photos/eighties_british_rail/8559190101/

Norton961
Another area of improvement for the Bachmann Class 24 is the roof fan which sticks out above the roof way to much. The expensive solution is to buy one of the Extreme Etyches replacements, but the cheaper option is to press out the existing fan, file it down and re fit. this shows the fan as supplied. This shows the filled down version. I am slowly working my way through my 24 and 25 fleet with a mixture of etched fans and filled down ones. Norton961
Re the round exhaust ports here is my rendition on a 24/1 using Brassmaster etch for the port and also the Brassmasters resin casting for the headcode box. Loco also re painted with a full yellow end. The headcode is one for my P4 layout Trench Sidings and is a real headcode. David
Norton961
Re the roof fan, here is my first attempt at the Extreme Etch replacement. The hole left by the original Bachmann item is to big for the etch so I filled the gap with a strip of plasticard. Here is the finished result. RMweb Gold Phil Bullock Posted March 31, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 31, 2015 Decided could not tolerate Bachmann's mirror image MU cable so answered my own question! Cut cable off, attached both ends, drilled carefully .5mm and inserted cable made from .45mm NS wire That'll do! Phil
37114
My model of 25191 which I am desperately trying to get ready for Cheltenham in less than 2 weeks. This has replacement resin cabs which I am road testing for "Simon BR Blue"
