How many shunters?

I haven't got any  I do need a couple i'm just scared of reopening the

"which 08 is better  is it the Bachmann or Hornby" debate !

Hi Birdee

I have some Hornby and some Bachmann. When they use to be used in numbers on my Hanging Hill depot layout both types looked and performed equally as well as each other. Debate closed. :locomotive: :locomotive:

I find that the Hornby 08 is slightly finer in its details. Although the Bachmann version didn't come with the screaming gears that the first Hornby ones did. Both are equally at home on any layout. Put them side by side and at normal viewing distance, it would be hard to tell which is which unless you know what to look for.

I standardised on the Hornby ones for myself, although I do have some Bachmann ones for the little uns.

Ps- my total number of shunters has gone up by 2 more since I started this thread.

Hornby has the edge on detail and finer connecting rods. Bachmann is close, but has the advantage of greater availability and having appeared in a lot more liveries. I have two Hornby ones and the rest are Bachmann; I would happily buy more from either stable. Also the Bachmann one can be had for less money.

My set-up has 3 traffic sidings, a private siding and an engineers siding. Traffic is also dropped or picked up on the main line, Being set loosely around the 1959/61 period, I keep one shunting loco on site, chosen from a Jinty or two 08s. An 03 also sometimes appears on a trip working.

I could probably manage most shunts with trip locos, but it is convenient to have one loco resident and available to disappear from time to time up the branch with a few wagons.

Or how many layouts have a shunters cabin? These non discript little buildings were everywhere. Sometimes they would be part of a larger building, but how many layouts actually have those buildings the railway actually built for the staff?

A bit like this one?

The prototype for this once existed in Chippenham up yard. It's seen here minus it's chimney as I couldn't tell from a photo I took on it back in 1985 whether the chimney was within the building footprint, or added on the rear. A chance look at a very large scale OS map at work, and the hut is still shown, with the chimney within the building outline. I've since added the chimney to the model, but as the layout is set up at home it's impossible to photograph.

How many layouts have the human shunter figures on their layouts in their yards and sidings, not many.

Hi Michael

As I use tension lock couplings I made an L shaped uncoupler from clear plastic. To this I added a Dapol figure who looked like he was uncoupling some wagons, he was cut in half and the two parts cemented either side of the uncoupler. When I needed to uncouple some wagons he would trundle up to them and do his job then back to the shunters cabin for a fag and a cuppa.

I would love to show you a photo but saddly I lost him.

I might make another one and post him on here.

Always room for more shunters. Currently got 6 class 08's and 2 class 03's. Out of the 6 class 08's, the first was bought for covering the yard pilot on our layout Strathmuir. A second was purchased which became 08761 so we had a spare. This eventually somehow grew to six!

Here is a shot of 4 of them. The latest addition being 08673 which requires a partial respray to correct the livery error.

I think I could easily end up with 10 class 08's!

Cheers

I currently don't have a layout, so my actual NEED for shunters is zero. But I have one 08 I bought on eBay last week, three more 08s in a cupboard I bought at Warley a couple of years ago and at least four 08s and two 03s in a box in the library somewhere, and at least four more 08s in a box I the loft.

I'm actually planing a micro layout based on the idea of a specialist shunter works, so I can have somewhere to display and play with them.

I've had both.

The Hornby one has better detail, but I kept knocking it off.

The Bachmann one is enduring and more liveries - I had an original one which ran like a dog due to dirty ( and hard to get at ) pick ups.

I have but one now, a later Bachmann 08839, which runs great. So if you get a Bachmann get a later one.

Its a model railway and/or a collection of what we like so the numbers are irrelevant. For the record my collection of Shunter's? consists of

DY1 Hunslet x 1 - 03 x 2 - 04 x 2 - 08 x 1 - 10 x 1 - 11 x 1 - J65 x 2 _ J67 x 4 - J68 x 2 - J69 x 6 - J72 x 1 - J94 x 1. Can they all fit on the layout at the same time No ! Am I likely to build more Yes. Its a hobby after all

Mostly a boring collection of shunters then ;)

My 009 industrial layout has:

Early model Bagnall diesel

RNAD diesel

Freelance double ended "Growler"

Freelance single end "Growler"

2x Gmeinders

Kerr Stuart diesel

Baldwin diesel

2x Roco 0-6-0 diesels

2x Minitrains steam

Lilliput diesel

Harlech Castle

That's 14 by my count and a few kits awaiting building:

Steeple cab battery electric

Early model Sentinel

Another Harlech Castle

Landrover based speeder

It's still not enough!

I really need some more stock and brake vans! :)

I used to take the shunting plank every year to the local club show. One requirement to have something new every year. It started with an 03, and a pannier. It ended up with 3x 03, 3x 04, a class D95xx, and about 70-odd wagons.  Not bad for a 4' shunting plank.
