Another of those lovely black boxes have appeared

20220915_204300.jpg.adb735476cfc38207ae2cd9f812ac4a9.jpg

I had never really jumped at these when they first came out as the liverys never really fit in with the part of the world i model. But they did run a small number of these up here.

20220915_204526.jpg.1076daba87ef389f8f4a0e4dd1fa2150.jpg

I know absolutly nothing about the STS livery but i have a plan. Two of these are going to be repainted into the usual grey cement wagon colour and one will stay in this livery as a what if 'hired in' wagon. Only change to make is the ladder for the two blue circle build ones getting repainted.

Overall a really nice model. Hopefully some will do a new tool of the Vee barrel builds.

well, it's been a min since I managed any railway modelling. joys of the big train set and lodge jobs!

Anyway, I have finished off the SGT brake force runner just to notice three of the four doors have had the steps removed. A bit late not as it has all its branding put on. Pictures a bit naff but you get the idea, just need to fit the painted window blanks on the three doors and the end blanking plates to finish it off before final satin varnish coat.

received_458750722713826.jpeg.ea66076dedf6a4fbf0d7e41536c6fd0e.jpeg

Next plan is to try and clear this mini yellow backlog up. NMT needs a tiny touch up on the bodyside yellow before it can progress and the other barrier coach needs more of the usual fill, sand, prime and repeat.

In other news an offer that was too good to refuse came up, so I have finally started to get some 'normal' passenger stock to run seen here on test on the club layout.

20221013_192611.jpg.1ca95abd460c0d05c7b986d117b9b0c2.jpg

love them or hate them they are essential for modern image modelling for vast areas of the UK and it would be great if they made it back into the range again. really happy with this, just need the XC HST to run alongside it now.

Starting to look at what to do next, got a load of Mk2s for various yellow conversions, cement and ballast wagons to weather as well as a few other ideas for stock to rework. All these ideas and not enough free time!

In the quest to finish off various things 43062 has had some progress made between coats on a 1/72 sea harrier which also really should have been finished a month back.

20221016_153533.jpg.e9e7b91a160270372f539b5d7e4ce825.jpg

Warning panel is vallejo 71.002 medium yellow and the roof is just model air black. No fancy paints for this part! Not been enjoying this as the curve of the cab front has been a bit awkward and will need masked again. Thankfully i have thought this might be the case so left a bit of room for corrections.

Still cant moan too much as this is a lot cheaper than the new tooled Hornby ones will be when they do the yellow ones!

I have ventured into the loft and found more stuff I forgot I owned! and does not fit in with the era and region I'm modelling

first up we have this rather nice Bachmann RES 47/4 which I was convinced was a 47/7. So far I'm thinking of getting replacement fuel tanks off Bachmann to make this WCRC 47786.

312978553_810366726958128_6983503780473809739_n.jpg.f340f55a004f23629956563ea20bd763.jpg

Item 2 of stuff I forgot I owned; this repainted Bachmann 57/6 into 57601.

20221026_204540.jpg.d2618e09b09cde3edf73c9d11305c464.jpg

Think the plan with this is to let it sit in Dettol or if I'm feeling brave after the exploding end Mk3 99% Iso to strip this back to the plastic and re do it as 601 in northern belle livery. unfortunately, it is a Ex FGW donor so the rad grill is wrong. was hoping the correct 47 style ones where under the etch part but no luck. Would like to try get it accurate but depends how hard it would be, few ideas how to do it but will see how it goes.

Not had a lot of time to get much done on the 43 but I have started prep work for adding the top marker light, so it is not miles away now. More to follow soon

well, that thing that's been knocking about the last few years finally got me hence the lack of modelling. Another thing that got me was the black Friday sales!

20221128_183326.jpg.21ddfe34fb4887fc213572591cb7e082.jpg

The Accurascale MHAs are simply lovely, opted for EWS pack 1 and DB pack one and finally took the plunge and got a short rake of the revolution trains IWAs. 20221128_183727.jpg.6f6b189ebc0e2053016a089a2ecc3e86.jpg

First bit of revolution trains stock I have bought and I'm quite impressed. Loads of lovely etched metal bits along the frame and full brake gear which is a surprise. Only fault I can find is there is an extra res tank on the underframe whereas the real thing is only fitted with one (how's that for rivet counting!) As you can see, I have already set about ripping one wagon apart for fitting the supplied stanchions. Not too sure how well these will glue down compared the ones fitted which lock into the side of the wagon frame. Also, these wagons are far too clean and all of them will be receiving a fairly heavy but prototypical weathering as well as losing the blue floor. Could not get hold of 'Pack A' so opted for two 'Pack B' so got two to renumber and one of them will be a bit different compared to the rest of them but you will have to wait for the results

hopefully get back to some more structured and more frequent posts soon

Just come across this thread - some great work and mirrors some similar projects I have to do myself - will be following with interest 😃

thanks for the kind words, at the moment it's a mix of projects I have been wanting to do and spur of the moment projects.

Have started ripping apart the wagons to bring them in line with what I want to run. I have done four 'Mixed' sets where some of the original stanchions have been removed and replaced with narrow ones. One full replacement and 028-2 which is a bit of an odd ball with 4 narrow stanchions either side complimenting the original blue ones. I still have another mixed and replacement set to make up.

'mixed'

Full Replacment

028-2 additional narrow stanchions

20221130_185445.jpg.b12381d6f3ba7bd1b22004e3fdba1524.jpg

Fairly easy job. all you need is something to pry the blue ones from the body side and your choice of glue for the new ones. Hopefully they hold, real test will be the first run of these on a layout tomorrow night along with the JPAs which have yet to turn a wheel in anger.... I blame Bachmann... need a 70 for the front of them!

Well, the IWAs were run tonight but not without discovering a fairly major fault with one wagon. Controller kept overloading so first instinct was to swap the loco which did not clear the fault. subsequent testing revealed one wagon has a wheel which is missing the plastic bush which insulates the axel causing a short across the rails. With that wagon removed the rest ran well and I only knocked off one stanchion!

Of course, between all that I forgot to take any pictures of them running with the 56 so that will have to wait till next week. Also running was 60087 with the transition period Cement rake comprising of JPAs, PCA vee tanks, Accurascale PCAs and two KVAs and 66720 with a mix of Dapol JNAs, Hornby Coal fish and Acurrascale MHAs

Remembered to take pictures this time and it was two stanchions knocked off this time. Think they where a casualty of putting stock on the other lines in the fiddle yard as I found them when packing away. I'm wondering if having a load on would help prevent them getting knocked off or perhaps a stronger glue?

Anyway, ran them into the sidings, split and reformed it before propelling back into the platforms and over the cross overs. Good running session over all.

Probably be one of last post prior to xmas ect. Been having a push to try clear the projects shelf and it was the turn of the last two railway items of 2022.

43062 has received full branding before getting a satin varnish. The tarmac 60 also got varnished. Unfortunatly the tarmac banding had silvered a bit but i can live with it.

20221218_185511.jpg.1ccd3ba60410985cb63be9782f0db6a0.jpg

43062 will be finished off in the new year once i figure out how to rework the Hornby light board and wire in the top marker.

20221215_191539.jpg.2c01dd80a45275a8d90f239fc9a11625.jpg

And a nice bonus of the last order of 22 arriving early. Bachmann have knocked it out the park with the new 158s!

Couple more running sessions this year so there might be a little photo update once i decide what to run

Really been struggling with motivation to get any modelling done of late in my free time but have forced myself to get a start on something.

One thing i disliked with the IWAs was the as built blue timbers. So first one through the shop was 28-2. All those lovely stanchions i glued on are off and will be painted which will be another post. The trusty Mig tank paints are being used for this

20230218_170613.jpg.49b291310bc03f38fa6564d536d90b3d.jpg

A mix of 'old wood' with a touch of shadow rust was used as a base. Already a massive improvment for what im after with these

20230218_180045_001.jpg.7d0ecf16a58e33101b5e4ca4ad3dac90.jpg

Few boards where then picked out with 'new wood' to mimic where boards had been replaced. This is most common over the bogies

20230218_182316.jpg.d6f6215f016ac3a0b44ca0fc54ea8e63.jpg

Finally they where given a quick slap dash application of flory wash. Still need to clean if off the sides of the wagon but its a fairly easy way of toning it all down and most importanly adding veriety.

20230218_193213.jpg.6b36630367639c58e68c0de483662a73.jpg

Rather happy with it so far, next up will be chipping effects and a overall application of grime

Timber part two

Bogies off and stanchions back on. Various chipping methods used at this stage.

20230226_145643.jpg.b0b9c1c9f0b10b6cc6a22248f1cefed1.jpg

Given it a blast of frame dirt. Cleaned off the lifting points, handbrake wheel and a few other bits.

20230226_160236.jpg.3350c7f3d945a132bce2e73ee6527017.jpg

Thats about it for the timber wagon for the time being, let it all dry and get it varnished. One down, 7 more to go!

They have multiplied! An absolute steal on the model rail limited edition 57601 at Glasgow has now made the repainted one redundant. My thinking is to get a replacement 57/3 body to go on the /6 chassis prior to stripping both back into WCRC northern belle livery which uses the standard WCRC maroon with cream band. While I'm at it I think it would be as good a time as any to finish off the Mk1 RU for the set. Sure I read it was a 50/50 mix BR maroon and GWR stock brown for the NB brown? who knows that what I'm spraying on it either way.

20230227_172953.jpg.46d8133d67964464ad19258aaa024be4.jpg

Glasgow was as always a great trip, finally got to see Deadman's lane in person. Unfortunately the main man was away from the layout by the time I got there. Plenty of yellow inspiration and the LSL push/pull set was superb!

Another venture into to the land of yellow HSTs. 43277 is currently in the planning stage and a pack of the 2023 lner ones has been ordered to become ex LNER NWR and 43274. As long as it does not get repainted between now and 2024/25 when they eventually turn up...

Looking at the yellow ones i have its less than ideal as the motors in 062. Having it in one of the buffer fitted power cars allows for more flexiblity when running them. So im looking to swap the chassis. This is going to to require some surgery.

received_880686416481430.jpeg.071546d6f58a7856126ca2331721e3ef.jpegreceived_988375952599260.jpeg.8f24b717ef096d9464393c688411ed6a.jpeg

So my idea here is to cut at the red line and remove the taperer infront of the lead bogie and draw up an adaptor plate to print to fit the bufferbeam too.

Also in the works, i was asked to see if i could make end plates for the drs escort coaches. 10 mins and a prototype later its not miles off. Attaching in the interior of the coach allows for the sligt recess the prototypes have. V2 will have window frames and hopefully a tighter fit requiring a bit less filler. If i can get a good enough fit i might offer them up for anyone else who wants to mod them

Back to some yellow stock, 977994 test coach. Nice easy one. First step was to put the FGW ciggy pack TSG into the forbidden vodka for a soak. Hornby really should buy some microsol for these, decal application over the doors was shockingly bad for a 2022 model.

20230311_130014.jpg.f4865e5ea1aa127ae7400c92ffcfe71e.jpg

Left in a quiet corner for four hours and given a scrub most of the paint was off. Second time i have done this, some of the roof black struggled to come off but got most of it.

Only modification this one needs on the body was filling in the smaller part of the guards door on both sides.

20230311_184037.jpg.30c2815d3354f35f15ee50be662de1e5.jpg

A quick sand back tomorrow and hopefully be ready for a shot of primer.

Pair of power cars should arrive next week too become EX EMT 274 and colas 277

Bit of progress on the DRS Mk2 parts. think these are at a stage where I'm happy with them. This is V5 of the file, most of it was fine adjustment work and I have added tabs which locate into the existing gangway holes for a stronger glue bond, less filler and they help old the sides in at the correct distance. This is the last rough print, the next ones will be at 100% print quality but it looks very promising I think and should require minimal filler. Will be interesting to see if it can do the frames I have drawn up for them. 20230314_163432.jpg.91a0e267e240912e8638189cc5b04364.jpg

They are indeed. earlier MK2a versions. might have a crack at the Mk2F ones with the hopper windows at a later date. Whole idea of making these parts was a friend was wanting his model rail ones upgraded and they have been on my hit list for a while

we have a winner! very very minor adjustments made and V6 of the file has given the desired result. If anything it might be 0.2mm too short at the bottom but I'm happy with it.image.png.3c9177a4c9d191f1db68bfc526bdb0b1.png

so far 4 for myself and 4 for a mate are spoken for but a handful of them will be appearing on the usual auction site once I have made the window frames up for them.

Also arriving onto the workbench is the latest Hornby EC power cars to become Colas 43277 + 432**. original plan was to do 274 but the lights on these don't allow 3dtrack clusters to be fitted which also rules out 43272, So both will be now be going into colas rail livery and one left un numbered for the time being. will become either 43251 or 43257

image.png.96637c4ca8db81c3d2efd72c2ee49526.png

TBH I have not noticed much in the way of changes to the original retooled 43 but the fan motor set up and lights are a welcome addition. These will be next for a dip in the ISO once the Mk3 has been painted.

It will be interesting to see 43277 build, Roland and myself were discussing the yellow at the rear, I wonder if it is Network Rail yellow.

Looking forward to the nuclear coaches, well done on your print for the windows.

I can do you one better, Had the paint codes sent to me from the depot

RAL1003 Warning Panel Yellow

RAL1004 Network Rail Yellow

RAL2004 Orange

and gloss black.

Hopefully that helps you and Roland out, unfortunately the LNER power cars from the last run are quiet rare and the new ones are delayed a year but modifying the exhausts on these does not look too much hassle.

print has now reached version 6 as I forgot they retained the rubbing plates. Thankfully it was only a 5 min job to add them in

Could not help myself... no point having to sprey NWR yellow twice is there

Getting rather good at stripping back these 43s, here it is post exhaust mod prior to its dip with the all important jar of ready to sprey orange paint incase anyone was wanting to know where and what to get.

20230324_165802.jpg.868aa99db6155debbfeb5a002afe7c53.jpg

Exhausts was fairly streight forward. Carefully cut the rounded end sections off and sand the remaining square port to the required height.

20230325_000643.jpg.2015cef36d69253a6ac0021ea783772d.jpg

Most of the paint flew off it but what ever Hornby used for the warning panel is putting up a fight, the paint they used on the horn grill must be

indestructible as its not even touched it!

The second power car will be getting the same treatment once i clear a bit more space on the project shelf. Currently got a 1/72 turkish F16 which has 5 sheets of decals to go on

Was hoping to get the yellows onto it this weekend but the new .5mm needle for the airbrush never showed up on its friday delivery slot.

Did managed to get some primer run through it with great difficulty so not miles behind where i wanted to be with it.

20230326_121630.jpg.2ef8267004b79dc000a99f191384f482.jpg

And the exhausts have turned out rather well from the steps mentioned above. Still got the square plate to glue down but thats a two second job that.

20230326_121723.jpg.205dbadd6d8e613b38a83573a23b59c2.jpg

Im in two minds to give it another quick coat of white primer before starting the yellow just to give it a really good base to go on to. Probably take around 5 light coats to build up a good coverage anyway

Managed to get a loan of my brothers airbrush while i wait on the postie bringing the new needle for mine.

Starting with the yellows, warning panel and network rail yellow took a couple of coats but no major issues

20230326_133816.jpg.9ebe4c7411fd1659d041c59466b9867b.jpg

RAL 2004 on next once the panel and back where masked. Four coats of this approx 10 mins between coats. This stuff drys really quick!

Let this cure and then the black next weekend which should really bring it all together
