JTs mostly modern workbench

Small sort of between major project update. Was hoping to be nearly done with these but other things have taken priority.

Small session back modelling, Bachmann mk2s have had the end plates fitted and a inital hit of filler. Still a bit more sanding and filling to do but have managed to get to halfords and get a can of filler primer which should help speed things up.

Next for a clean, repair and paint was the 3d printed NVA i started about a year back. Was ever 100% happy with the paint, roof had a dip in it where i cracked it joining the halfs and to add insult to injury i managed to crack the flat end stripping the paint off it. All glued and a hit of body filler just need to throw some paint at it to check what needs sanded.

I do have a couple of projects planned involving mk1s and three colas 70s to tart up so hopefully get a bit more done in the coming months

New locos have arrived, 70811 at long last. Out the box I was suprised how light these are. Some haulage tests with the cement wagons are in order i think. Another thing while looking at the instruction booklet was the day/night switch. Lights on the locos go between day and markers only.

Other than those points they are rather nice models. Planned works for these are to change out the drivers, renumber/weather and sound fit them at somepoint. Two of these will become 70805 and 70816

Also got a bargin rake of Bachmann mk1s which look like all are going to require some level of repaint. Not a clue what charter rake to go for yet but WCRC is a very likely option or SRPS

Nice easy job tonight. First 70 for renumbering. Tamiya lacquer made light work of the factory printed numbers and logos. Decals are railtec colas dimonds and class 70 fleet number pack.

One of them was always going to be 70816. The second loco im thinking of 70805 which i know has already been done by Bachmann but i have my reasons. Did think of doing 812 with its one yellow head light or 814 with mixed logos but they might follow if more are aquired.

Weathering to follow at some point

Class 70 number two has had a bit of a mishap. Phone went while removing the numbers and turns out it was just enough time for thinners to eat into the main livery

A quick patch up with colas dull orange which is a closer match to the real thing than the Bachmann paint job looking more faded has resulted in a rather odd square

So what to do. Try and fade the rest of the paint and put the new logos over the top using oils or decal and try hide it with the planned weathering.

This is unknown teritory for me so any pointers would be great!

All may not be lost. Take a look at some photos of the real things on Flickr. Here's a link to one:

70812 at Carlisle

Most (not all though) of them had the cabside repainted yellow or orange before the new logos went on. On most locos it's a noticeably different shade. Up close you can see the finish is different to the rest of the bodywork too. One or two didn't have the repainted cabs, and you can see the outline of the old logo on those.

You could always do this.... (my pic, but not my graffiti!)

(70801 also has the safety yellow ends, as opposed to the lighter FL canary yellow)

Bit the bullet and set about weathering 70805.

Pin washed, frame grime, roof soot/grime and some dark marks round the engine and oil filter doors.

Went for a grimy finish as the last time i seen 05 was after a spell on the timber and it was filthy.

Fairy happy for my first attempt at a loco, some things i could do diffrent or better one but thats just how it goes

just need the new tin of thinners to arrive for the varnish. some Muppet put a dirty brush in the wrong one!

not sure if Matt or Satin would be best for it. I want it to look dirty but at the same time don't want it too look too dull

Got a few projects starting up in the next few weeks. One of them I'm needing a bit of help with is the WCRC shade of paint on Mk1s. Looking at Bachmanns Mk1 SO in BR maroon and multiple pictures of WCRC ones, the latter looks more red. got a rake of 8 mk1s on the cheap which will all need repainting so would the best plan be to use railmatch BR maroon or is there a specific shade WCRC use which would be available as a RAL paint code. did think about using a red oxide primer but don't think it would make much difference

I did see that Rainbow Railways has a shade of WCRC paint so I would assume that it is correct.  I wa going to get a pot next time I seen them.

got a pot of that but believe its the slightly darker shade used on the locos. can always paint a bit of card and hold it against the model to compair

Managed to get the class 70 varnished at last. Decided it was time to paint the 009 locos.

Base colour was AK olive drab

Base coat on, sat next to the other freelance locos which will be in a much more colorful scheme

Radiator, roof, chassis and buffer beams brush painted

Decided to have this one a more typical paint scheme. Just need to order the kato chassis for it.

Needing to find a paint match for the blue network rail 153 and hoping to unveil the next sizable project later next week

A slightly bigger small loco. I'm building a wagon repair workshop and decided I needed some form of industrial shunter, probably due to the fact I'm constantly around three 1/1 scale ones at work which is also the inspiration for the layout.

Hornbys 0-6-0 sentinel was the locos of choice, very nice model but maybe don't so keen with the super glue during assembly next time. Bit of a nightmare to strip back but got there in the end. Good job I'm adding a donkey engine/compressor housing to the side as one of the valances took some damage. Thankfully not required

20230901_181724.jpg.0351178511ac2740cc45fd064620ce05.jpg

First job was to take the wasp stripes off the side. A long job with t cut and cotton buds but saves painting it

20230901_183225.jpg.ecde04a79175daf8f53fe4422bc07c97.jpg

Once off primed.

20230901_201601.jpg.04aa620fa83589566fa055f5cf61a922.jpg

Livery wise it's not following any real world schemes. Black bonnets and white cabs possibly with some red pin stripes on the black, got some custom nameplates for it to give it the personal touch. Also looking at a sound decoder and maybe directional lights but it's a tight fit.

Nice project to tick over with while the base board kits are cut

Steady progress on the sentinel has seen the livery elements applied.

Still waiting in the new bits for the engine end but these should arrive early next week. The dcc sound decoder I was after is currently out of stock as well so will have to wait for the time being, in the mean time I'm slowly relearning how wiring works in prep for the lights. Can atleast get them built up and pre wired ready for the decoder.

Livery wise just some red lining and sentinel logos to go on. Coming together nicely

I spoke to Brian Hanson from Shawplan at a show a few years ago and he supplied me with some laser cut plastic backs and lovely etched covers for the '  Oo' style as seen on DRS 66/4s, for example. If it’s the more modern ones as fitted to DBC 66s, I’ve not seen anyone produce those yet. I’m sure if you ping Brian an email he can help you.

Thanks,

Jack.

Paint work is mostly finished now. Just a couple touch ups prior to varnish.20230915_193356.jpg.2d5a2e2658e40e1fc3075a0408391b5b.jpg

Sentinel decals and some red stripes to go on and hopefully the nameplates will arrive shortly. Have been painting up the driver from modelu and while browsing the site I found something else.

20230915_194620.jpg.987860cd9b7ad2822cefa46c8f719499.jpg

I said at the start of this the loco was going to have a personal touch. The loco is being named Mars after my late cat who was also a bit of a modeller, always at my side when painting and building various kits. Modelu had a three pack of cats so it only seemed appropriate to have a cat sat in the cab watching the world go by. Given the small nature of the 4mm figures I have managed to get his markings (on the left) spot on.

Thanks for the suggestions on the lights. Going to get them ordered next week.

Another black box has appeared at the door... this time the absolutely stunning 37609. A nice easy 10 mins fitting the detailing and finally figured out how to put the three piece on the coupling for the other end. The one thing that I don't like is the pipes swinging around off the retaining clip but that might be due to working on the 1/1 scale stuff and always clipping them up when done with. If Accurascale do the refurbished /0s in this livery like 069 I'm going to end up very very poor! Planning on adding a goal post type coupling to the front of it to be able to run it either double headed with 423 or another DRS loco

Looking good! Have to say Accurascale have done a great job on applying that livery to a 37. tough job and executed brilliantly.
