Gibbo675
Hi James, I know that you are using a kit to convert your flats but do they have intermediate fixed coupling bar in the kit ? If not here is what I did with my ones on page 8 of my workbench thread: Gibbo.

Cheers Gibbo, the kit does look to have the coupling bars in, iv only read the instructions through once so far and im sure theres a bit about it in there. If not ill be delving into your thread again, already have printed your thread on the prototype set! Cheers James
jessy1692
I managed a bit of time last week and over the weekend to try pull a few bits closer to the finish line, i seem to have containers everywhere at the mo which are devouring grey paint... As a break iv got Kestrel just about done, sprayed it with satin varnish yesterday and finished off a couple of little details and glazed it with crystal clear tonight. All thats left is gloss varnish over the headcodes and try fit a cab, overall im very pleased how its come up in blue. On the freightliner front, the boxes are still going through painting which seems to be taking forever but i have finished 3 tanks in the ICI livery. The blue is actually BR express steam blue which seems to be a good match for the ICI blue on the stickers. I have 3 more in primer to do and im not sure what to do with them, i have a set of shell stickers but i may do another set of ICI ones, think im just programmed to like white yellow and blue, i blame Leeds United... I chucked a bit of a black wash over them to tone then down before i left tonight: Thats about it for tonight, only other news is the janus is edging closer and another ebay bargain deltic has appeared. Going to cost a fortune in shawplan bits soon... Should also get tackling the freightliner flats this week. John Tomlinson
Fascinating to see your Kestrel finished and in comparison to the original colour scheme. The overall blue scheme looks a lot better than I imagined it would, a pity we never had a fleet of them to go out and see! John. 2

Thanks John, i did think last night when they were side by side i missed a trick and didnt do the blue one as HS4001. Im very pleased with how it turned out, was unsure how it would look but once the transfers went on it really came together, if i were to do it again i would rake the angle of the yellow panel back a bit rather than a straight line below the windows, still looks good in blue though! John Tomlinson
The numbering is a good question. Yours could be the prototype repainted and leased by Brush to BR for further evaluation. If there had been a series build I suspect they'd have carried BR numbers, and as they'd just have made it pre-Tops, something like D91xx, as D9000 upwards were meant to be type 5 power. Not sure how the Teddy Bears fitted into that one. I think your yellow front as done really works because there isn't much above the bottom of the cab windows, and highlighting the framing helps a lot to break up the "slab of yellow" effect. You could angle it back, or indeed have a parabola from the bottom rear of the cab side window to the point just above the buffers - that might look too racy. Perhaps others will follow in your footsteps and try variations, I do have a Silver Fox body and it's high time I got off my rear and did something with it! Thanks again for showing us your splendid work. John Edited October 22, 2019 by John Tomlinson typo 1

Or better still this contraption: What I find interesting is how the blue seems to alter the proportion of the locomotive , the cabs seem shorter along with overall length somehow. Better in green And of course the Metro-Cammel and NBL type 4 diesel hydraulic used for hauling the Blue Pullman replacement set of coaches pre-dates the double ended HST. I have one of them as well but not a photo of it. 4

Now this is a beast D700....it looked like this. Had BRCW built a contender to the Brush 4 without the style consultants getting in the way as they did with Lion. Its been a while since i saw all your conversions/butchery, it was thanks to you that i embarked on most of mine, just imagine the 21/29 monsters flying or failing around the network... As for 700, it must have had a rebuild after a bump? Edited October 23, 2019 by jessy1692
jessy1692
Small update for tonight, after doing a few other little jobs freightliner butchery has started proper. Im starting off using the S Kits detailing kit for a production 5 wagon set, first stage has been drilling out the rivets and lowering the bogies mounting by 2mm each (instructions say 2.5 but i think 2mm is enough) The kit provides new pivots by the look of it. Tonight i chopped out the webbing and the container mounting pips and their plates. Need to tidy up the cuts with a file but looking good already, 5 more to go.... Its the Leeds exhibition at the weekend so ill be there to enjoy the quality layouts and pick up some plasticard supplies for the next steps and the caboose. Thanks again to Gibbo, his notes and pictures of his build have helped me out no end and spurred me on to get going. Once these 5 are done ill get going with the shorter 4 car prototype set, should make a decent train. jessy1692
Back to freightliner flats again tonight after a restock of plasticard from the Leeds exhibition yesterday. 5 have now been opened up and 2 are completed with new droppers with trussing and deeper sole bars as per Gibbo's detailing. 40thou strips to deepen the sole bars and to create the new trusses at the bottom. 30thou square section is then cut to 11mm to create the new droppers. Quite tedious and repetitive but worth it. 3 to go and then ill crack open the SKit detailing pack to finish the 5 car set. The containers are coming on great and about ready for new transfers and weathering when i get round to it, got 3 30ft containers on the way with a couple more flats from ebay. As a break this evening i took off the masking tape off the Janus which showed a few small bits of paint creek so tidied it up a bit, little bit more to do before its ready for transfers but coming on well. Gibbo675
Hi James, Fitting all those droppers is one of those jobs that you have to be in the mood for or else it drives you crackers, I did 150 of them for 15 wagons although not all at one go. Gibbo. I was thinking last night how did Gibbo not lose it doing his 15 wagon set! Tbh though once you get going and have plenty pre cut ready to glue it helps. Definitely worth thr effort though
jessy1692
Bit of progress on the freightliner front, i now have 2 outers and 1 inner pretty much completed: The SKits bits are pretty good but i did add a bit of plasticard to deepen the buffer beam as i like the chamfered look of them. Whilst i have been doing other non modelling stuff my dad took it upon himself to have a go at the 4 car prototype shorty rake, hes already done both outers and an inner and they look great. Another inner is just about done tonight and just need some final bits to finish the rake off, looks like theyll be going through the paint shop together with the 5 car set, weather depending. Not much else to report, got some 30ft containers ready for painting and a few more 20fters on the way from Ebay. The Janus is just about ready for transfers so may get these done this weekend. Cheers for looking in James Edited November 6, 2019 by jessy1692 8
