Ab-rail 2011

Hi,

Haven't seen a thread for this show, if there is one, sorry for duplicating!

The Abingdon Model Railway Club is holding it's annual exhibition at the White Horse Leisure & Tennis Centre on Saturday 5th March from 10:00 to 17:00

There's some more infomation here, as well as a map: http://abwiki.mrsecure.com/doku.php?id=wiki:shows

At the moment I don't know the full list of Layout, Traders or Demonstrators, but I do know that my own, newly extended, Hythe Parkway (Stand No. 55) and Graham_muz's Fishterton Sarum will be there.

Come along and say hello!

Simon

It's amazing how quickly this one seems to come round - an 'early buds of spring' job and an excellent show in my view, well worth the cost of the (ever more expensive) diesel to get there and if you start early enough in the day you can easily add in a visit to Pendon (and the pub grub in Long Whittenham is worth it toobiggrin.gif).

Thanks for that reminder, somehow every year I forget and drive right past it... perhaps this year I'll put my brain in gear before leaving.

Hi,

A bit of a bump!

Ab-rail is happening next Saturday (5th March)!

I'll be there with Hythe Parkway, so come along and say hello!

Simon

Thanks for the 'bump' Simon - it had quite slipped my mind what with an auction today and tomorrow and the attractions of ancient timetables and old carriage working books grabbing my attention and wallet.

Went to Abrail yesterday, first time I had been for a long time, really enjoyed the show which has grown substantially since I last attended. Plenty to see and buy although I did not buy anything!. Layouts were generally excellent and I liked the layouts in the centre traders around the perimeter which is becoming quite common these days. Enjoyed Fisherton Sarum amongst others.

Despite not buying anything there were loads of bargains to be had if you delved deep enough, T9 for £60, Grange for £54, Hawksworths for £24 amogst others, the latter looked sublime on Abingdons layout, I know rising prices are a bone of contention but there are bargains if one looks around. Good day out despite forgetting where I had parked my car, just a shame this cannot be expanded to a two day event it is almost big enough.

Excellent show as always and sufficient new Bachmann wagons and 'wants list' Middleton Press books to ensure that it wasn't exactly a cheap day outblink.gif Abingdon is always a good show in my experience and this one definitely maintained the standard with some attractive layouts to suit all tastes and, usually a good chance to look at them.

Afterwards we adjourned to Long Whittenham where The Plough is still doing excellent sausage & chips (and a good fish pie according to my son) and a very nice cider. But alas we didn't make Pendon as the car park was full to overflowing as was the road down to it - but always another day for that.

I would agree. Once again a good show, I came away with a few small items and a headache (no fault of the venue) I left my sunglasses behind so had a dreadful return journey and had to sail on past Pendon yet again.

For me the best layout in show was Iron Mould Lane with some some outstanding detailing, grubby yet realistic appearance, good operation and a few surprises.

Disappointed that the show guide has taken a nose dive to being a near useless folded A4 sheets from being the best MRS guide around. But it was free so shouldn't really complain. Arrived early enough to avoid the off-site parking - so can't complain about that either. March 3rd already in my diary for next year's show.

From an exhibitors point of view, it was a good show, although the loading/unloading arrangements left a lot to be desired (known issue, not a lot can be done to improve), with plenty of variety and a good mixture of trade and demonstrations. It was a very long day, but I was happy with the way Yamanouchi Oshika performed...one or two minor issues, which were fairly quickly resolved, and in general on how it was received. :) It was good to talk to a number of people, who were, in the main, very friendly...

There were some very good layouts in attendence; a few pictures of which are below. Annoyingly the show guide that I was going to use to identify the layout went walkies during clearing up, so as a consequence many of these don't have names attached. Those that do either had the layout name on one of the pictures I took of them, or I remembered! Apologies to anyone who I have missed off...

So, in no particular order...

The very first layout (O gauge roundy-roundy with loco depot) is Kimble, from the Leamington & Warwick Model Railway Society.

Thanks for posting the photos - always nice to see an overview of an exhibition when you can't make it.

I like the look of that Scottish layout...any ideas if it has been published or has a thread?

Thanks, Pete
