  1. I have just received my EFE cross country set and I am delighted to have a ready to run set of LSWR coaches. The shade used for LSWR coach salmon seems a bit pink to me. I wonder if EFE has used LSWR building stone rather than coach salmon.
  2. I am not sure if banana vans were painted yellow but the LSWR and Southern Railway may have painted them cream. HMRS Livery Register LSWR & Southern on page 45 suggests that refrigerator vans were painted pink or stone: the shade is a matter of dispute but their colour chart shows pink or light tan. It does not mention banana vans. Precision Paints have adopted the pink shade for wagon stone. The model manufacturers have adopted a pale cream shade for banana vans. These include Hornby's 1937 0 gauge model which was contemporary with the real SR wagons, Hornby Dublo's SR refrigerated van, Hornby's 00 gauge banana van and Peco's N gauge van. I presume they all did some research to arrive at the same colour. The picture shows a Peco banana van. I hope you find this useful,
  3. You will be pleased to see that the Swanage Railway Heritage Carriage Group has recently obtained an LSWR carriage body that was part of a house for nearly 100 years. It will be used as a workshop and store. It looks like it has five compartments two of which seem to be in LSWR brown and salmon pink livery. I am still waiting for the Hornby R40107 1st class coach and R40110 LSWR brake 3rd. These are available from Hornby but not yet from the retailers.
  4. According to page 46 of the HMRS Livery Register the insulated and ventilated vans had a light coloured finish as they did in LSWR days and this colour was probably moderate yellowish pink so perhaps it was more subdued than the Hornby 0 gauge van. Hornby also made a yellow Fyffes Banana van from 1931 - 1939. As some had red roofs and a green or red chassis this may have been a fictitious livery. A lot of Hornby 0 gauge locomotives and rolling stock were painted in authentic liveries
  5. Bill Faulkner from the Wimborne Railway Society that I belong to has converted his LSWR pull push gate stock set into a brown and salmon pink LSWR set. It looks splendid on the Kernow web site at http://www.kernowmodelrailcentre.com/p4/94/Customer-Layouts. One of the pictures shows it running on a Wimborne Railway Society layout.
  6. While I am waiting for the Hattons LSWR coaches I am tempted to make some Ratio Great Western 4 wheel coaches and paint them brown and salmon pink. I expect the Hattons coaches will be better but it will be a good stop gap measure. Many years ago Graham Farish made some N gauge freelance pre-grouping four wheel coaches and these sold well and were ideal for people with little space. I think that the Hattons coaches will sell well because I think that the people who will be happy with generic coaches will exceed those who want a specific prototype which will only be suitable for one railway company.
  7. Chris Woods has painted a splendid picture for Kingfisher Cards of 563 leaving Waterloo station with a rake of brown and salmon pink LSWR coaches. These are available from the Swanage station shop for £2.25. Meanwhile there is an article on page 3 of the June 20 Swanage and Wareham Advertiser showing that the Swanage Railway hopes to raise £350,000 to enable 365 to haul trains to Swanage again. The T3 was built in 1893, eight years after the Swanage branch line opened, and was used to haul express trains from Waterloo to Swanage. There is also a full page article about the T3 in Headline News on page 8 of the July Heritage Railway. The plan to restore the T3 is getting well know both locally in Purbeck and nationally for railway enthusiasts.
  8. Watched it again last night on BBC 4 at 22:00. BBC 4 filmed the Hornby and Hornby Dublo sequences at a Hornby Railway Collectors' Association meeting at Broadstone Methodist Church Hall. The month before our chairman told us only to bring Hornby and Hornby Dublo items. I was very pleased to see myself in the background wearing a pink shirt. I was also pleased to see Chris Littledale with his layout at the Brighton Toy Museum as I knew him when I lived in Worthing. I found it a very cheerful programme which covered the history of model railways from Bassett Lowke days to the Tri-ang train sets which brought model railways within reach of people with modest incomes. I also liked the French railway and the talk from the lady about the psychology of model railways.
  9. Has anyone noticed that 'the Joy of Train Sets' follows this programme? I became a TV star when I was wearing a pink shirt during the filming at Broadstone Methodist Church Hall on a hot day.
  10. No but I wish I had his job. Looking at the programme I was not wearing a pullover but I was wearing my pink shirt. I thought that the programme was very well presented. Chris Littledale from the Brighton Toy Museum played a prominent role.
  11. It is on BBC4 tonight at 19:00 (Sunday 9 September). I am going watch it again because I am in it. They filmed Hornby 0 gauge at the Wessex Group of the Hornby Railway Collectors Association meeting several years ago. I am in the background wearing a pink shirt.
  12. I am in the background in the top right hand corner of part 2. I was wearing light grey trousers, a pink shirt and a maroon railway tie so I have turned into a TV star. I remember them filming at the Wessex Group of the Hornby Collectors' Association in Broadstone Methodist Church Centre. We were only allowed to run Hornby trains on the 0 gauge layout so there were no Ace or Darstaed trains that we usually run.
  13. I have received my ex-LSWR coaches from Hattons. I think Hornby received theirs first, then Rails and then Hattons last Friday so perhaps the local model shops will get them next. It looks like the crimson coaches have been more popular as Hattons is selling the crimson coaches for £35 and the olive green coaches for £32.50. I was going to buy them from Rails but they sold out of one of the BR crimson coaches. The labelling of the boxes is good with the crimson coaches R4746 and R4748 being marked as Set 43 and the olive green coaches R4717 and R4719 being marked as Set 45. For those who remember Tri-ang Hornby's first prenationalisation coaches I am pleased to see that the olive green coaches have grey roofs instead of white roofs. White was correct but the roofs quickly turned grey in service. I have not yet worked out how to dismantle the coaches but the bodies are separate from the chassis so it may be possible to run a knife blade where the join is. It may be possible to repaint a couple of crimson coaches into LSWR chocolate brown and salmon pink livery without dismantling them. I used DPD/Interlink Express for delivery for £4 as the Royal Mail option was £16. I tried to access DPD for tracking on my laptop but DPD went permanently onto my home screen. After trying to remove it for an hour I have lost the home screen altogether after MSN hijacked it so any money I saved on postage will be used towards getting my laptop repaired. Hattons packed them on Friday afternoon and I received them this afternoon which is reasonable.
  14. Does anyone know how to dismantle the coaches so people can repaint them? I expect some people will want to repaint them in malachite green but I am planning to commit sacrilege by repainting them in LSWR chocolate and salmon pink to go with my LSWR Adams Radial tanks.
  15. The Oxfordrail livery looks correct for the current livery of the Adams Radial on the Bluebell Railway. It is a co-incidence that the model has come out just as bluebells are beginning to appear. In Wikipedia there is a picture of 488 dated 25th October 1975 in a darker shade of green with more elaborate lining. This is similar to the livery of the Hornby M7 245 that is preserved at the National Railway Museum at York. If Hornby produced a radial in this livery people may buy both versions. One of the videos shows 488 with a LSWR coach in salmon pink and chocolate brown livery on the Bluebell Railway so it would be possible to create this scene is miniature as a present day scene without having to alter the radial to its state in LSWR days.
  16. I ran in my 02s at the Corfe Viaduct layout at the Stables, Godlingston Manor, Washpond Lane, Swanage last night. Calbourne caught up with the Southern version. There were a couple of derailments on the second radius points and some binding on the second radius track but both ran well. Calbourne visited the Swanage Railway in April 2012. It was turned on the turntable and hauled the goods train and a rake of green Mk1 coaches. Possibly the only time it has hauled Mk1 coaches. It also double headed a train with M7 30053 which is much bigger than Calbourne. I have not got any records of Southern 02s on the Swanage Railway. In Southern days as they were replaced with T1s on the branch service but 02s looked similar to T1s. 02s worked alongside Beattie Well Tanks on the Swanage Railway and there is a picture of 02 180 leaving Swanage with a rake of six wheel chocolate and salmon pink LSWR coaches for Wareham on 15th July 1890. Unless Kernow makes an LSWR version I will have to get my paintbrush out.
  17. Items that I would like Oxfordrail to make to go with the Adams Radial are an LSWR brake van and some LSWR bogie coaches in chocolate and salmon pink livery. I would also like to see some wagons on the 2015 wish list like an SR banana van and an SR cattle van. I am pleased to see some pictures of the model Adams Radial today and that the replies are back to discussing the topic.
  18. LSWR passenger engine liveries are described in great detail on pages 7 - 11 of HMRS Livery Register no. 3 LSWR and Southern published by the Historical Model Railway Society. There is a colour chart in Appendix 4. No paint fragments remain of the locomotive colour applied after 1917. The writer thought that light olive was the most representative shade and the colour in the chart is darker than the shade used on the prototype 120 in the 1960s and the shade used by Hornby and by the Great British Locomotive Collection for 117. The sepia picture of 702 in 1921 on page 4 of the Great British Locomotive Collection Magazine also looks much darker than the picture of 120 on page 116 of Preserved Locomotives Fourth Revised Edition by H.C. Casserley. Even though 117 may be in the incorrect shade and represents the locomotive as modified by the Southern Railway and British Rail it still looks attractive hauling a rake of chocolate brown and salmon pink LSWR coaches.
