Didcot and Llangollen diversion. First thing in Heritage Railway Magazine that caught my eye was a letter extolling the people-friendly free-roaming nature of Didcot Railway Centre which is what draws us back down there as often as we can. The other thing of interest was closer to home: the list of locos lined up for Steel Steam and Stars IV. Of the visitors to the Llangollen Railway, I'll be looking forward to seeing (in particular): 1450 Severn Valley Railway June 2014 Great Central's 9F 92214 sister of the Mid Hants 92212 Ropley on the Mid Hants Railway June 2014 Collett Goods 3205 and West Country 34092 City of Wells which we couldn't get to see last year. Seeing the 2-8-0 tank engine 4270 will be quite something, too, having already seen 5227 (parts donor for 2-8-0 4709) at Didcot. The home fleet will include 2-8-0 3802. First off, I wasn't having a senior moment, after all, in initially mentioning that 9F 92212 was going to attend SSSiv. I've just found the brochure we picked up at the Stafford Show and it indeed includes 92212 although we were entertained most admirably by 92214. It seems they had to rearrange things. They are not very 'railway' but they could be added to the layout as amusing anecdotes. And many reference particularly to my father who is in a number of the madcap pictures. My family has a lot of mining town connections dating back to the early 1900s, and a load of pictures. Hopefully someone somewhere has a picture of that man standing up there and can say......ah yes........there's a funny story attached to that one......... And....my dad says he has a picture of my first car there somewhere, the one I bought and repainted recently to the colour I remember. Inspiration comes rom so many sources, and often only the modeller as any idea of all the little sources that make them smile. A GWRd enthusiast caught up with him on Safari and brought him back to the UK a couple of days ago, still in his stripey horse boilersuit. He's come to model for a scaled down Bittern mascot, but he'll have to learn to keep still like the grownup Meerkats. I suppose we could wait until he's asleep or put him back in his animal crate Yakov Toy box. Anyway, we'll see what we can do given that his scaled down size will be short of 2mm tall. Wow, that's even smaller than this Smiley. Africa Mama say maybe Oleg need grow some more. I didn't know this at the time, but since discovered 2-8-0T 4270 is a "Southall" loco in the care of Locomotive Services, Icons of Steam. As noted above on 12 January, the expected loco was 92212 (also Icons of Steam) but 92214 was magnificent. (Southall in 20 August 1961. http://www.railbrit.co.uk/imageenlarge/singleimage.php?id=33519) Next time, I'll post some from the following weekend. As it was going to be wet in the morning we decided to do the afternoon and evening so, leaving the sunshine(!) back west, we arrived on the Platform at Carrog East with brolly up. Oops! We got off the train at Corwen and waited for the next one arriving from Llangollen. 3205 inside motion - so much easier to photograph without the strong shadows you get in bright sunshine. We then rode behind the West Country in the observation car deciding this was preferable to braving the weather on a brake van ride on the goods train. Back at Llangollen, we watched some run-arounds, then Wells letting off steam (40 or so minutes worth!) before we went off to the shed to see progress on 6880 Betton Grange. Then off once more to catch sight of Southall visitor Black 5 45231 The Sherwood Forester which, we eventually learnt, had failed the previous Saturday so not in service after all despite all my planning to get a ride behind it. No matter, we'd bought the guide book (really well produced, by the way) the previous weekend which paid off - once we'd got our heads round the timetable. ...more tomorrow. G'night, all! After the Black 5 we passed 5199 which had been involved with transporting the chain links during the recent restoration of the chain bridge at Berwyn (aka Midford for SSSIV). The Chain Bridge 18 April last year and 6 March this year. They're expecting it to be completed in April. Now, there's an excuse to go back! Trains had been running late so, rather than risk the last train back to Corwen being cancelled, "Justin Case" decided to end our day on an earlier train arriving back at Corwen as night was closing in. The pics below were edited (lightened) to make it easier to see the lamps being changed over. Not that I saw anything of this at the time as I was on the other side of the fence trying to hold the camera steady, in the dim light, through the gap in the railings, happy that I was getting some (sort of!) night shots and all in the interest of modelling posting on here for your delight. Hope these pics do justice to what was a great event and a couple of grand days out. Thanks for looking. One of the great things about the forum is that you see characters coming out, not just the modelling. That's what makes it more of a community rather than just a source of facts. Keep posting what you like and those who also like it, like me, will rate it as such, and those who don't will skip over the posts and look at the ones they want to see. As to modelling, we're in the middle of turning the modelling room kitchen round so, apart from the odd bit here and there on CQ for May's exhibitions, there won't be much of that going on for a bit though I doubt It'll stop me finding something to post on here, like my ideas to run GWRd... ....round the dining room so I can play trains while I'm waiting for the other kettle to boil. 6 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

As others have said, looking forward to seeing more of your modelling skills With a number of preserved locos to run on GWRd, these steam events are really useful for seeing how the locos and trains behave and weather, and also how they are operated and managed. With something like the West Country, which had to let off an awful lot of steam, it was a reminder that it wasn't able to work as hard it was designed to. Now, Southall shed yard has a bit of a ramp up to the relief platform which proves a problem for a loco pulling out a 10 car trainload (which the MPD wasn't designed for!) and there's also a bit of an S bend to negotiate. All good stuff. A "steam" machine under the baseboard might be fun to try out with Tangmere sitting in the platform and there'll be lots of run rounds in the '60s era to have fun with. What was interesting was that we stood and watched "Wells" for over 40 minutes - far longer than we'd watch a loco just standing there in a loop on an exhibition layout! At times, we had to remember we had a train to catch when hanging around and admiring a loco or two. Lots of things to think about. 4 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

The foreshortening in the video shows how Southall Shed sits neatly below the mainline, not as obvious in the Tangmere videos mentioned below. There are a few Tangmere videos posted on GWRd page 11, one of which is of Tangmere on 8 empty coaches plus support coach and hauled out by, what I think, is a Class 47 bearing the title Scarborough Spa Express on its side. The third video on page 11 shows Tangmere on a light engine move alongside a stone train which is waiting in the platform road before heading off for the mainline. As we're talking wagons, the EWS Class 66 is hauling ex-RMC (Ready Mixed Concrete) JGA Bogie aggregate hoppers. The pic of one of the three Southall shunting trucks come adrift along with ex-GWR English Electric 350hp shunter 15104. Colour photo but no date, loco looks black ad has wasp stripes. To the side could be a BR Mk1 coach coupled to a van both in weathered/faded maroon (that's as far as my rolling stock knowledge will take me on the few feet showing). And, of course, the gasometer stands guard in the distance. (Yes, I'm going through the old mags to make room for new ones. How did you guess?) Back to clearing out now.
