woodenhead
Is there a reason why the sidings are still in situ and used for running round when the old main can perform the same function. I might be answering my own question but is the main on a slope?

APOLLO
Is there a reason why the sidings are still in situ and used for running round when the old main can perform the same function. I might be answering my own question but is the main on a slope? The former main line to Altrincham (left lines) are on a rising gradient from here up to the Latchford Bridge over the Manchester Ship Canal. The bridge is still there, theres a thread about it here http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/56039-cadishead-and-latchford-viaducts/page__fromsearch__1 The right hand lines ran down to the canal, also at Latchford, and linked into the MSC line, as well as a couple of local industries (a scrap siding & Lion Emulsions (now Colas) - tank trains ran untill around 1980 ish. Interesting area, nice photos Beast. Brit15
