I have used Halfords primer on A C Stadden's figures with no loss of detail. Just one quick sweep. You need to let them dry properly before you turn them over and do the other side or the primer pulls off the raised points when you pull them off. In general there are two types of detection, occupancy, that detects current being drawn in a section of track and Point or position detection which relies on a switch of some description, opto, magnetic, rfid etc being triggered. There is also vectorisation, which uses ultra sound or laser or radio to triangulate the position but is far less common. In general larger layouts have longer rakes and smaller layouts have smaller rakes so the difference is proportional. Did you set out working blocks based on train and carriage size? What problems did you encounter? Position, speed, slowing down, sequence, or other problem? I am looking at the Hornby Loco Detection due out later this year. We don't know how it will work yet but believe it is a sensor in a sleeper reading a tag below the loco. Thanks for any help or suggestions ypu may have. Kal Posted April 19, 2014 Author Share Posted April 19, 2014 (edited) I break down the layout into blocks, a block being a length of track in which a train can stop.The length of the blocks are at least 6 inches longer than my longest train but it some cases much longer. Anything shorter is not a block and so needs no detection. Blocks never contain turnouts. With occupancy type detection.. I only need to know when a block is occupied and by what and also when it is empty. Because trains run on rails then If train 1 leaves block a in a westerly direction then taking into account the turnouts settings the train arriving in block b must be train 1......
