It is a shame the coaches are not scale length and size, but they are just reusing the Harry Potter set tooling, which is very smart business.  The original set was just supposed to be for the Harry Potter and holiday sets, but Lionel found the vendor had done a near scale size Hall class.  So, being smart business men, they made more in proper colors.  It has sold well state side, just try to find the Kinlet Hall set.  The only part I dont like on the new one is only having that lower headlight on the front of the smokebox lighted, whereas Kinlet Hall had its 2 lower lanterns lighted, although a bit to bright IMHO.   I will probably get the set, probaby the best value for UK style coarse O gauge in the states.   Mike

Those Lionel Hall sets are generally a bargain so not worth a lot especially over here and too expensive to post back to the UK.  Best keep it and enjoy it!

David, what brand of paint  is the one you recommend with the number just in case it may be available in the US

Brian.

It's Vallejo Model Color and there are several US distributors*  - No. 70-926 Red (it's actually a dark red/crimson colour). It dries matt and may need varnishing.

* The manufacturer was first registered in New Jersey. so supply should not be a problem.

Scratch building a TARDIS should be quite straightforward.

The Langley police box looks a little thin and undernourished to me*, but I haven't seen the real thing for many years now....  Round about the time 'Doctor Who' started - they weren't all that common then. (Errors can be excused on the grounds that the TARDIS is only faking it and its circuitry was faulty anyway.

* unless it's a photographic effect, of course.

Mike, there's always the Dinky Toy version, see #119 back in March.

Brian.

I don't think that one is 0 scale though (fit the box scale?). They are also hard to find and expensive. It would be very appropriate for Hornby Trains though.

EDIT Apparently it was claimed to be 1:48 scale like the Royal Mail van*. This looks dubious to me from these two:

http://www.talkmodeltoys.com/discus/messages/27668/3616.html?1316983836

The prototype seems to be about 8 or 9 feet tall, which would be about 2.5" in 7mm scale.

* This would be too small of course - the only true 1:43 - 0 scale item in the range is the yard crane, though some of the cars are 1:45 which is probably 'near enough'.

EDIT 2

Found this 'bargain' from our 'friend' Cartmel. Supposedly good condition (fair/poor in my book).

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DINKY-TOYS-MODEL-No-42a-No-751-POLICE-BOX-/301627931593?hash=item463a6cfbc9

Other sellers are available!

The height is given as 66mm, which presumably includes the fancy bits on top, which I didn't in my estimate. This would equate reasonably with 1:48 of course. The mail van always seemed to be to a large van rather than car sized (see #119 where both are present).

That makes the Police Box 10 feet overall and the Van 14. I recall the latter being bigger than that (it's only the length of what we consider a large car over here). However it's a long time (I try not to calculate how long - it's depressing :O ) since I saw either. However Dinky Toys (and their competitors) were never all that worried about scale (or even the right number of wheels in the case of trains).

But that's the joy of it all.

I just received another 4w coach & 3 more trucks today. :)

Edit: Note - these were at a 'sensible' price, in good running condition, (I'm not worried that my 'toys' have been previously played with).

A good loco, on a suitable train!

Have you see these http://www.meccanoindex.co.uk/MMpdfs1.php?

The 1930s ones have excellent little articles, suggesting how to recreate near-prototypical trains and operations with the products of Binns Road. It is actually quite funny to see how the writers "stretched a point" to try to sell more of 'whatever', by finding excuses to use it on a layout.

Hi Kevin, I have some, not many but they're a great read. Time has moved on since their publication and a lot of the articles never came to pass while others were an excellent forecast of things to come. The Hornby articles are timeless!

Indeed.

If you are thinking of getting an M7, I suggest that you move quickly. The production runs for each livery are surprisingly small, and I have it on genuinely good authority that they are shifting like hot cakes, with Ace wishing that they'd ordered a few more from the manufacturer (ETS).

The other smaller SR loco that is about to hit the rails is the 'Yank Tank', from Raylo and WJVintage, again made for them by ETS.

Very much looking forward to that.

BTW - any photos that I put on RMWeb are iPad shots, so frequently lack depth of field being close-ups under poor lighting, but I always try to hold the iPad on or against something fixed, to avoid camera-shake. That is why I favour track-level shots - I hold the iPad on the rails!

Well, rumaging through the photos saved on the computer,I found this crisper shot of the same scene, but from a slightly different angle. The M7 is Bing for Bassett Lowke, circa 1909,but fitted with a later B/L block magnet electric motor and its train is Ace trains six whellers, converted by me to bogie shorties, such as Carette made for B/L at the time of the M7,but never in LSWR colours, which was inconsiderate of them, wasn't it! I had not finished the conversion at the time of the photo,as I notice the coach is lacking truss rods and battery box, which they subsequently accquired.

Magnificent!

I was hoping to see a closer view of that loco. The Ace coaches match it well and the duckets on them still amaze me - top notch trompe l'oeil.

Is there a Bonzone in the first photo? And, what is that lurking behind the engine shed?
