Worsley Works GWR 4mm C32 Toplight.

I started a part build of this 'part kit' today. If anyone is interested (I have not seen a Worsley 4mm coach build on here) I can post some pics, but they are not very different to any other brass coach build. I'm actually taking stage pics to assist the prospective new owner in his first efforts at coach building a little later in the year. That's probably going to be a David Geen full Toplight kit.

However, the Worsley design is such that it is very similar to a Comet Models coach and that helps; well it helps me!

I've not done a Worsley Works kit before so there could be some 'howlers' so do point them out if I get to post. I'm also ignorant of GWR Toplights and only have some Harris pics to help me along. Advice gratefully received.

The only Worsley Works pack I've had so far is the one for the 42xx/5205 2-8-0T. Etches mostly look the part, and chassis is designed to be a P4-specific "fold-up", but the biggest howler is the smokebox saddle.

Hi Phil,

I have the etches for trailer No. 92 (as in Railmotor No. 93) and they are not much different to the offerings from Comet et al. Would you like me to dig them out for a quick picture or two?

All the best,

Castle

Yes please Mr Duck - I'll be starting my own first Worsley Works kit shortly, so it would be great to see pics of your build. Mine is a 16mm kit of the WHR's Pullman car Bodysgallen, so it'll be a tad larger, but I understand that most of Allen's kits follow the same pattern. Looking forward to following your progress,

David

The Worsley Works GWR coaches I have built have been the whole body etch.I have a K22 from the Worsley Works sides, but for me, I spent so much time cutting up plastic body shells, I could have spent the time soldering up a full body shell.

Here is the D39 as the basic body shell and finished with D Geen parts

Similar D42/H2 dreadnought tea car (from Worsley Works but not in his list?)

My C32 is from the Geen kit which is not that different from the Comet methods apart from lots more detail parts to add if you want to. You built up the basic box and add all the parts. One area that I prefer Geen/Blacksmith etc is the fold over strip on the top and bottom edge of these kits which adds much needed strength to stop the sides bending out of shape. These etches have the added advantage of the correct underframe. Personally I find the Geen roof much easier as it is all plastic to construct and all the rainstrips can be attached with solvent and they are on for good. Also assists in the weight issue, as many kit coaches are quite heavy.

I have also built the big brother to the C32 the 70ft C38. Just a longer version of the same coach.

I'm not bothering posting pics, as Bogie's are so informative and really beautifully finished too.

Phil

How do they compare with Comet in build Phil and do they fit to the underframe the same way.

Phill,

A couple of questions if you don't mind, what did you use for the roof and dos the sides have the tumblehome pre formed?

Very tempted by a some of the woosley kids as for the time being 3 of the Dave geen ones would strech the budget a bit much

Similar but the sides are a bit 'thin'. The fit to frame is the same idea.

One needs to source everything else except sides, ends and underframe. There is an etched battery set and the V hangers for the brake gear, however I would use cast Battery and Brake/tank parts from Dart Castings.

Anyone with GWR kit building knowledge (not Comet) would probably know where to source GWR parts.

I'm not doing a roof for this one but an MJT/Dart castings one might fit? The sides need the turn under rolling but they were quite flat sided coaches.

On this build I forgot to roll the ends before fitting the bit that attaches to the frame/floor, as the sides are cut away just a tad at the ends.

However the ends do fit as I was still able to do a little 'roll'. :stinker:

I shall post a couple of pics to show this as Bogie's coaches are more or less complete.

I did start by thinking I would use the sides on a Hornby donor (as some have demonstrated) but I was not impressed with the amount of faff that would have entailed.

The first shows what you get from Worsley. There are no instructions; WW expect the builder to have some experience.

You might notice the half etch hinge slots? I drilled the holes for the Frogmore hinges, at the bottom of each slot!

The rest are self explanatory except for maybe the droplight set of three:

first DL pic shows masking tape holding drop in place at rear of side;

second shows DL soldered in place (all drops closed on this coach);

third shows DL in place....view from front.

Also, the end steps are a neat etch (see first pic) that just solders onto the rear of the end....neat!

I think the 8th and next to last pic answer Rob's question.

Hope this gives some help to those that might just be embarking on an etched coach build?

I'm biased but a Comet Coach would be a really good place to start.  However, as Coach Bogie's pics show, Geen and Worsley kits can give you a damn fine looking coach.

Thanks

Phil

Here is the Geen C32 at a similar stage. You can see the fold over strip at the top which stops the sides distorting. I am making one with toplights and the second toplights plated over.
