Lactose-free milk is pretty good these days - tastes just like normal milk, because it basically is, just with the lactose removed. I too find the various plant-based versions awful in tea. Jay Foreman explains where Yorkshire tea is grown, around 30 seconds in...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCc0OsyMbQk THough we've actually got a Camelia in a pot in our garden - not big enough to get any tea from yet though...
  2. For some reason, I had this sketch in mind too...
  3. Funnily enough, this just cropped up on the BBC: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-58578061 If they can get it down to under £5k for a conversion I'd be very tempted. And this is why we'll never get anywhere with actually trying to save the planet. Green is only good when it's profitable, while when it comes to actually reusing, repairing and recycling, they can't give a toss (except with recycling, but only if they're forced to)
  4. In my experience of driving older cars for many years, it's the parts that "don't wear out" that are the most trouble to replace when they do... That and brake pads, which some manufacturers had a habit of changing mid-model so you'd have to actually check the calipers on the car in question before ordering to see what was fitted - one friend found that his Peugeot 205 had different calipers on each side - with no sign of either having previously been removed from the car too, suggesting that it came from the factory like that... There must also still be driveshafts, unless they have hub-mounted motors (I believe most don't, due to the cost and unsprung mass) - and therefore CV joints, and bearings, and of course brakes. So yes, less stuff to replace, but still plenty! Plus of course it's not just wear, but also collision damage that might lead to parts being replaced - how easy are they to repair? It was mentioned earlier that a Tesla needs much less time to assemble than an equivalent VW - I wonder if that's because much of it is glued together rather than being bolted? If so, that'd make it much harder, and therefore more expensive, to repair - leading to more being written off after minor accidents, significantly increasing their environmental impact.
  5. I know how you feel - I ended up in the same situation last year with my previous layout when the shed leaked. It was a good opportunity to make good on a few mistakes I'd made along the way though, particularly with baseboard construction and track laying.
  6. That'll make them a nightmare to maintain! Hard enough to find the right spare parts as it is for many cars...
  7. Wot, like this? https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/92927-kernow-gwr-steam-rail-motor/
  8. Groundwork now completed, using the technique suggested by @col.stephens I'm not entirely happy with some of the bits alongside the cess, but I think I'll give it a coat of paint first to see how it looks before carving anything away.
  9. Dorchester is another - up trains had to reverse in to the original terminal platform, whereas down trains had their own on the extension.
  10. I'm hoping the conversation went something like this: Price: £250 Dealer: How much to me? Wolf: £300 - nah, tell ya what, as it's you, I'll do it for £400...
  11. Apparently most modern saws are impossible to sharpen and set, due to the hardening that's done during manufacture.

Situation here still seems to be chaos - big queues outside all the filling stations that still have fuel. We're getting to the point of acutally needing some too, I've been putting it off until things settle, but I can only assume that the panickers who were causing the queues earlier in the week are now back for more...

Surely they need to cover each pump individually to catch thieves though - a single camera at the exit wouldn't know which of the cars leaving is the one from pump 3 who just paid, or the one from pump 5 who didn't.
  14. Which is somewhat counter-intuitive given that the more obtrusive an ad is, the more likely a user is to block or avoid it - as demonstrated by the number of posters on this thread discussing ad-blockers.
  15. While that's true, why don't they make it clearer? Simple a little "Including VAT" underneath on the second page would help...
  16. Or another option - cut two lengths of 1/2" square timber to act as spacers, one along the front, one at the back. That'd keep the frame foughly in the position it is now...

Unfortunatley, while you are correct, that doesn't work - we are more productive working from home, they know we are more productive, and yet they still demand that we go back to the office. And that's despite the SAGE advice saying that a wholesale return to the office will cause a spike in hospital admissions.
  19. The same photo appears on Wikipedia, dated 1958 and credited to Ben Brooksbank - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LSWR_T9_class#/media/File:Nine_Elms_Locomotive_Depot_ex-LSW_'Greyhound'_4-4-0_geograph-2682248-by-Ben-Brooksbank.jpg
  20. I agree. Wait a few days, maybe a week, and they'll have all restocked. That's my plan anyway... Not like the panic buying of perishables last year, when there were news reports of bins full of bread etc.
  21. If you're going to use a pot, you don't need to bother with the fixed resistors, it'll do the same job (you just use the middle pin as the output, the two outer pins power and ground) The exact values don't matter, it's the ratio between them that's important.
  22. The simplest method to drop 12v to 3v is with a voltage divider - two resistors, the equation being Vout = (Vin×r2)/(r1+r2) - so for 3v, 1kohm and 330ohm would be suitable. Then connect them as follows: +12v ----- r1 ----- r2 ------ ground | 3v I might have so suitable resistors in my old electronics box, I'll try to find it over the weekend and have a look.
