I'm trying to get some period rationale into my 1930s Dee Valley layout. I have a Llangollen Rly limited edition 7 plank Wm. Coward, Timber Merchants, Llangollen wagon. It looks pretty and is fairly rare, but please can anyone tell me whether it ever existed? I suspect not, not least because I'm alwys suspicious of green-painted wagons. The note that comes with it says it "could be typical of PO wagons" running in 1900-1910, and there are timber wagons tpo be seen in LLangollen goods yard. Again, it looks like a later RCH design mineral wagon with an end tipping door. If it's a cuckoo, it can go on eBay!!

I have a brake van that I want to use with engineers' trains (including the Triang Eng Dept clerestory and some old wagons, and a new ballast wagon kit bought for a song at a swapmeet). I can't find any illustration showing the location of the lettering for Engineers Dept on the brake van sides - although I have the HMRS transfers which I'd quite like to use. And does anyone know a suitable number for one (AA15/AA19)? The GWR Soc list doesn't help here. Any info would be much appreciated.

Two years on and I have taken the plunge, sold the "incorrect" West Wales Wagon Works model, and commissioned transfers from Robbie's Rollingstock which are excellent and have the two Ds as there should be! Worth £2.50 of anyone's money as I'm sure he'd supply anyone else that asks him although they are not in his catalogue, either as transfers or placed on Dapol wagons.

Very many thanks gentlemen. I bought a couple of black-painted GW liveried kit-made wagons, so will now have a go at weathering them with a lightish wash. Should do the trick...!

Please can anyone tell me what colour were GWR Eng Dept wagons and vans? I recall old black trucks at Moat Lane circa 1959, but had these ben repainted by BR in a fit of enthusiasm?

In Wales of course and horsedrawn, but the Pwllheli town tram was a good comparitor to the French model.

Would Llanberis fit the bill? And Nantlle had a siding going forwrd to Coedmadog quarry as well as a turntable beyond the platform end.

First of all, if it's period accuracy you are after, choose a cut off date. Anything not built before that is a candidate for ebay. If its just the big GWR on the loco, or lettering on coach sides, get a fibreglass pen and rub the decals off, replacing them with shirtbutton transfers. That is a nice little job to get you back in the mood. Worked for me anyway!

Ive built virtually all my layout with peco track and points bought on ebay for about a quarter the price of new and not had any problems. I agree that Hornby curved points are best chucked away, but Hornby flexible track is fine and easier to shape. Stick to peco joiners as Hornby ones are too tight. Best of all are Gaugemaster joiners. Whatever you choose, painting hides a load ofissues. Have fun!

Brillint idea. I believe there isa record of a piece called 45, which is a recording of a pinist sitting at a piano for 45 minutes without playing a note, and then closing the piano lid and walking off stage. Would that be what you were thinking of?

Its got to be carpet. Things dropped don't bounce or roll so far and rolling stock tends not to get buggered up so much if dropped. Easier on the knees too! A plain carpet is best for spotting small items.
